  1. One down, seven to go...

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

That's all from me, but not all from us.

In about 15 minutes' time we'll begin our build up to the second last-16 game of the day - Argentina v Australia.

For now, though, I'll leave you with the highlights as Netherlands booked their spot in the quarter-finals...

  2. 'Solid foundation for USA'

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

There is a lack of attacking options for Gregg Berhalter and they came into this tournament knowing that we don't really have a number nine of international calibre. It all relies on Christian Pulisic.

Giovanni Reyna is one for the future but is not there yet. That is not enough attacking substance yet. But they are going to grow, get better and better at big clubs ahead of 2026.

There is a very solid foundation now. They are all young players, working with European coaches and the MLS is growing and getting better year by year. They want to showcase that in three and a half years - and they will.

But today, there was not enough quality to trouble the Dutch.

  3. 'Bitterly disappointed'

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

USA head coach Gregg Berhalter: "This is a difficult one to handle. It's such a good group of guys, such a close group of guys and we came up short today. But it wasn't for a lack of trying or a lack of effort. The guys put everything they had into this game and, unfortunately, we lost it.

"I'm really proud. When you think about how this group has come together over the last three and a half years, it's really special to see. You don't often get to see a bond like that between team-mates and the staff and everyone in the group. Bitterly disappointed in the result today.

"We made some progress. When people look at our team, they see a clear identity. They see a team that fights for each other, talent on the field. We made progress but on this particular night we came up short."

  4. The star man...

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    Dumfries
  5. 'Five-star performance'

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    Micah Richards

Former England defender on BBC One

I just thought Denzel Dumfries' whole game was brilliant. It was the timing of his runs. He didn't mix it up too much but when he did, it was in the right moments. He was breathless down the right-hand side.

His defensive work was good. It was a five-star performance and he capped it off with the goal. A composed finish.

  6. 'Netherlands shut Pulisic down'

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

The Dutch showed their experience. They knew that the main threat from the US was Christian Pulisic. They can get the odd goal from elsewhere but Pulisic is the threat and they just shut him down by not allowing him to get any deliveries.

  8. 'Netherlands set traps off the ball'

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    Alex Scott

Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

It's about how you can control a game without having the ball. The Netherlands knew that the US wanted to play a high pressure, high energy game and they just dropped off and didn't allow them to do that. It asked the US to try and figure it out, which they didn't.

Everyone knew their job, they set traps and then won the ball back.

  9. 'Netherlands expect more'

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Dutch football journalist Marcel van der Kraan speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Sorry to say and I probably sound the most negative Dutch journalist but it was, most of time, very boring again.

"I thought what are we going to do when we face a real big nation? We expect more. If you want to win the World Cup, you've got to come up with better football.

"It needs to improve still because if we play Brazil or Argentina after this, will this be enough? Will they put their chances away?"

  10. Get Involved

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (standard network charges apply)

Andrew Morris: The Dutch are just that little bit better than the US with a better manager. US played as well as could be expected and with a bit more luck could have made the game more interesting but ultimately the better team advances.

Daniel Grey: This is not your typical Dutch team. There's a steal and ruthlessness to their game. The base of the team is their defence. Van Gaal has got a special group for the World Cup. Youth, experience and talent bought in is scary. Sleepers to win it all.

  11. Post update

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has lost none of his 11 World Cup games in charge (W8 D3), the outright most for a manager without ever losing in the competition. Only Felipe Scolari (12) has had a longer unbeaten start as a manager in World Cup history than van Gaal (11).

    Louis van Gaal
  12. Only RVP to beat

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

Memphis Depay scored his 43rd international goal for the Netherlands, becoming the outright second highest goalscorer in Oranje history, behind Robin van Persie (50).

In fact, Depay's goal ended a sequence of 20 uninterrupted passes, the most on record for a Netherlands goal at the World Cup (1966 onwards).

  13. Post update

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

USA have been eliminated from four of their five appearances in the round of 16 at the World Cup, going out in each of their last three such games (2010, 2014, 2022).

  14. 'Sending a message'

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    Micah Richards

Former England defender on BBC One

There is no one outstanding team in this tournament but the Netherlands did send a message today.

The US were a little bit naïve today but the Netherlands did look sharp in that first half.

  15. 'Netherlands quality wins them the game'

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

    Dion Dublin

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

The better footballing side won. The energy levels of the USA were high but they weren't as busy as they have been early on in the tournament.

The way that Virgil van Dijk marshals that backline, and de Jong just sits in there on his toes, they know exactly what they're doing. Memphis Depay up top, Cody Gakpo in there.

They've got so much quality and that's what won them the game.

  16. Post update

    FT: Netherlands 3-1 USA

Netherlands are undefeated in their last 11 games in the World Cup, their longest unbeaten streak in the competition.

United States have attempted 17 shots in this game, their highest total in a single match in the 2022 World Cup.

  17. Journalist wearing Pele shirt

    Netherlands v USA (15:00 GMT)

    Emma Sanders

BBC Sport at Khalifa International Stadium

Following the latest reports on the development on Pele's health, I saw a journalist in the media centre before kick-off wearing a vintage Brazil shirt with Pele's name and number on the back.

  18. 'Pele the outstanding personality of world football'

    Jurgen Klinsmann

Former Germany head coach on BBC One

Pele is just such a wonderful person. The outstanding personality of world football. We can just pray and hope for the best but it’s very sad news.

  19. Messages of support from across football for Pele

    Pele

Messages of support for Brazil great Pele have been sent from across the world while the three-time World Cup winner is being treated in hospital.

The 82-year-old was admitted to hospital in Sao Paulo on Tuesday, saying it was a routine monthly visit.

However a report in Brazil, which has not been confirmed by the BBC, says he is now beginning end-of-life care after not responding to chemotherapy.

"Pray for the King," France forward Kylian Mbappe tweeted.

The three-time World Cup winner had a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and has since had regular treatment.

Pele was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and on Friday Sao Paulo's Hospital Albert Einstein said he was in a stable condition.

Speaking on Saturday, England captain Harry Kane said: "We are very sad to hear news of him being ill but we wish him well, not just me but the whole England set-up. He's an inspiration, an incredible person."
