I think Saka was fantastic tonight as an individual performance. You win a tournament by this: not by being the best team but by winning when you aren't the best team and that's what France did tonight.

  2. 'England need to learn'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

French football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

You need to learn how to win these clutch games. You don't just rock up against a big nation and then go and win if you're not 100% perfect in every sense.

I don't understand why Bukayo Saka came off for Raheem Sterling who's been away. Then you took him off for someone who's been in London for five days.

To win games like this you have to have things almost perfect. When you miss chance after chance their belief is growing.

  3. 'France were always in the game'published at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    FT: England 1-2 France

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I just felt like France were always in the game. If England would have scored I felt like Franch could've scored today.

I felt that when Mbappe made his touches and the space I had about ten mini heart attacks because he creates so much for the team.

The performance Griezmann had today was one of the best I've seen at this World Cup.

  4. 'There's no second chances'published at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    FT: England 1-2 France

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think England were great bar the first 15 minutes. It took us that long to get into the game in terms of believing that we were a team who could beat France but then we grew into it, gained control. It was just key moments in the game.

It's almost like France have the arrogance and belief because they are serial winners on this level and we're not. They've just got this edge in moments of the game where it's clinical. There's no second chances.

I thought we were brilliant on the night and it's such a shame we couldn't see it through.

  5. 'It is fine margins' - Southgatepublished at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to ITV Sport: "The performance did [deserve more] but of course goals are decisive. I've just said to the players they couldn't have given any more, they played really well against a top team. It is fine margins. The way they have progressed as a team through the tournament has been marvellous."

On the referee's performance: "It is pointless me talking about that. I'd rather talk about our players and say congratulations to France. We have given them a game and I don't think we could have done any more."

On Harry Kane's missed penalty: "We win and lose as a team, we let a couple of goals in and missed a few chances.

"He's been incredible for us and reliable in those situations, we wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for him."

Englishgeek: England negotiated a tough draw in the World Cup pretty well. This France team would have destroyed us in 2018, tonight they didn’t really do enough to beat us. England are improving - first time in how long we’ve kept up against a ‘better’ team & looked this good?

  7. 'England were better'published at 21:55 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    FT: England 1-2 France

    Julien Laurens
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think England were better, especially in the second half. There was a moment where you were so much better and should have capitalised. If you don't kill a team like France when they're on the floor then it will come back to haunt you. Even without the Kane penalty England should have won that game. If you don't put us down then that can happen.

France had two big moments in the game where they were on top and they scored from them both. That's the sign of a really good side.

England had far more where they were on top and couldn't capitalise.

  10. 'I saw a resilient England'published at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    FT: England 1-2 France

    Micah Richards
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think they should be proud of their performances in this World Cup. A lot of people said they haven't faced anyone and can only beat what's in front of them. But today I saw a resilient England, they never gave up, but just the crucial moments in the game which they couldn't get over the line.

  11. 'Fantastic performance from England'published at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    FT: England 1-2 France

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a fantastic performance. They were rocked by an early goal, faced a team who were coming up with answers and problems for England and they answered those and responded. I'm still not sure why it wasn't a penalty in the first half.

The only thing is they had the warning from the Giroud chance and they did it a second time and they were punished. It was a moment of real quality from Griezmann for the cross for the goal which was one of the moments of the game.

If I could give anyone the ball to take a penalty now, it would be Harry Kane. He was there and missed and it happened but you would not begrudge any of the England players.

    Gary is spot on.

This hurts for England fans. For some it will be familiar, to others it will be new.

A mate of mine has just messaged to say his young lad, Jake, is in floods of tears. And I really feel for him, because I've been there, like most of you. All I'd say, to piggyback off Gary's sentiment, is that he's lucky to be following England during a period when they are in fine fettle. This is a brilliant, young side, produced by a flourishing system that will only spit out more and more and good players.

England will come back and come back stronger.

And the thing about football is that the bad times only make you enjoy the good ones more.

    We go again, Jake!

  18. 'Kane will be stronger for this'published at 21:20 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2022

    FT: England 1-2 France

England midfielder Jordan Henderson, speaking to ITV: "It is hard now to sum it up, it is hard to find the right words.

"I thought we gave everything in the game, we were disappointed to go 1-0 down but we showed the character and mentality to keep going and find the equaliser.

"We gave it everything and unfortunately it wasn't our night."

On Harry Kane's penalty miss: "We know how many penalties Harry has scored for us, how many goals he has contributed to even get us here. He will be stronger for this in the future. He is a world-class striker and our captain, he will bounce back."

On whether this is a missed opportunity for England: "We felt good, the performances were really good, the focus and hunger has been really good.

"But you have to give credit to France who are a good team. I still feel it was there for us to win tonight."

    Jon: I feel sick.

Alex: That is an absolutely crushing defeat. England will never have a better opportunity to win a World Cup in my lifetime.

Ben: Absolute sickener. Better team by a large margin. There will be the inevitable pile on now, but Southgate had done a great job and the time will come for this team. It hurts more because we didn't deserve that.
