England manager Gareth Southgate at the post match news conference: “I think the team has really improved through the tournament. We wanted to go toe to toe and we have done that.
"I don’t think we looked out of place. There are so many good things we have done and so much to be excited about when you see the age of a lot of the players.
“We have had consistent performances and tonight is the best we have played against a major nation but we have fallen short and the scoreline is all that matters.
"Whenever I finish these tournaments, I need time to make correct decisions because emotionally you go through so many different feelings.
"I want to make the right decision – whatever that is, for the team, for England, for the FA – and I have to be sure whatever decisions I make is the right one. I know how my feelings have fluctuated in the immediate aftermath of tournaments."

France goalscorer Olivier Giroud: "It's extraordinary. We worked really hard defensively when we were ahead. It reminds me of Belgium in 2018
"Unfortunately we conceded the penalty. But we were able to be dangerous on a few occasions at the end of the match.
"You always have to believe and (Antoine) Griezmann gave me a great ball (for the goal)." "I'm so proud. We pulled out a big performance tonight
"We knew the potential of this young English generation. They've got it all. We had to use our mental strength to get over the line."

More from France manager Didier Deschamps: "England have a very, very good team. We put up a good fight. I regret we gave them a penalty and then gave them another penalty.
"Credit to my team, we showed some very good things and can still be dangerous. We also have great quality, impressive mental strength and great experience.
"England have young players, as well as experience, who play at the top teams. It was always going to come down to small details and luckily tonight it went our way.
"I will be manager for the semi-final and after that we will see. I don’t know everything in advance. We will tackle that later."

England manager Gareth Southgate talking at the news conference: “As you would expect, Harry is very, very low, but he has nothing to reproach himself for. We are in the position we are because of his leadership and goals. Tonight is the result because of 100 minutes of football.
“Even if that goes in we have a lot to do to win the game. No recriminations, we have always stuck together. We win and lose together.
“They know how close they have come, they have pushed a top nation all the way. More possession, more attempts at goal. I am very proud of how they have been.
"Some young players have announced themselves on the world stage, we have shown character, we have dealt with pressure and expectation.
“Of course tonight we have come up short. We felt we could win the tournament and tonight is very difficult. We have lost the game, I don’t think I should be talking about referees. We wish France well, they are a fantastic team."

When you’re at a wedding but Kane misses the pen

England captain Harry Kane on his penalty miss, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's tough to take for me personally and the team.
"I couldn't be prouder of the boys. We had better spells, better chances but football comes down to small details - as the captain and the one who missed the penalty, I take responsibility for that.
"I can't fault my preparation or the details before the game. I felt confident taking it, just didn't execute it the way I wanted to.
"It will be something I have to live with and take on the chin.
"The team is in a really good place and there will be highs in the future. Standing here now, we are gutted it has come to an end as we had full belief we could go all the way.
"We can be proud of what we've done."

France manager Didier Deschamps talking at the press conference: “Few people expected to see Morocco in the semi-final, they have surprised everyone and have deserved to be there. We very much respect our opponents and to get this far they have deserved it. No one can take that away from them. Let’s savour our victory tonight against a very good England team.
“Morocco will be very, very difficult to beat. It is fantastic what they have achieved. They have played and beaten some of the best teams in the world. It is a historic achievement.
“It is not a surprise seeing them. We have seen them put in a number of top performances, credit to them.”

Chris Sutton has been speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's 606: "I thought England played well. I think they were unlucky.
"Did they really deserve it the French?
"But I really felt for England, that was a really sore one."
On Harry Kane's penalty miss: "I really feel for Harry Kane. He’s a brilliant goalscorer.
"I think there are people out there who think he shouldn’t have taken the second penalty. I think he should have.
"That will live with him forever."

Chris Sutton correctly predicted the outcome of the the earlier quarter-final between Morocco and Portugal and he's done the same again, rightly guessing the reigning world champions would knock out England.
"Southgate was getting panned before this World Cup started because of some poor recent results in the Uefa Nations League, but down the years he has done a great job and he doesn't get the credit he deserves.
"Suddenly he has got England in a position where the expectation is there again, but now it gets really serious - England need to win three games to win the World Cup and they are facing some top-quality opposition, starting with France.
"I definitely think England can win this tie. However, before the tournament, France were my pick to win it and I feel I have to go with the holders to go through on that basis, although it is going to be very close.
"I also predicted England would only go as far as the quarter-finals. I really hope I am wrong."
Sutton's prediction: 1-2

A group of fans at The Eagle pub in Eastbourne, East Sussex, vow to get on with it after watching England get knocked out.
One says: “The pain is that we were so close. We were right there but then Kane missed a penalty, but you get over it and carry on.”

France striker Olivier Giroud walks into the press conference to a small round of applause from some France journalists: “All goals are important. The fact I went ahead of Thierry Henry with the 52nd but this 53rd is perhaps even better. A minute before I had a chance and I could have scored.
“I thought I might get another chance and it was unbelievable to score.
“The match tonight reminded of the match against Belgium in 2018. We fought tooth and nail, they came back into the match, started to believe but we showed we could be dangerous on the counter attack.
“We were a bit lucky because Kane misses the penalty but we gave our all and fought tooth and nail. It reminds me of the mentality of 2018. This group deserves to get there."

Everyone getting over dramatic, we lost to the reigning world champions and only by the smallest of margins. We competed extremely well and looked the better team for large parts of the match. You want a fantastic, impressive, good English team which are probably second in the world only to France? You got it. Let's celebrate the improvements we've made rather than suffer the loss (in an intensely exciting match that could have gone either way) we just endured.

This feels like the end of a cycle for England. Key players are getting on without obvious replacements and Southgate will like leave. whilst he isn't universally loved, he's been England's most effective manager for decades. Those types are harder to find than people realise. I sense a return to the wildness beckoning for the team.

I think Southgate has to stay, so long as he wants to.
He has taken England further in major tournaments, but at no other stage have his Three Lions side looked so assured, so confident, so capable of achieving something special.
There is still work to do, as tonight shows, but he has shown he is absolutely the right man to continue that process.
Consider this - can you remember an England team that has combined being so good, with so much promise to get better, whilst also being so decent and likeable? That's Southgate's great achievement.
We should all be proud of them and glad we have him.

One of the big questions facing Gareth Southgate and England now is about the manager's future.
Southgate is contracted until after the Euro 2024 finals.
"I think after each tournament we have sat and reviewed and reflected and it needs a bit of time to make sure everybody makes the right decision," Southgate tells ITV Sport.
ITV pundits Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Roy Keane unanimously agree they would like to see Southgate continue.

As a centre-back playing for England, would you expect anything different from Giroud or Griezmann? No. So your position has to be spot on.
He's the person that's going to hurt us, you need to physically lock in against him. It's however far into the game that the focus and concentration is all there.
Maybe it is winning tournaments, maybe that's what it is: just making sure that you either score or don't concede in those instances.

More from Gareth Southgate on whether his England side should have taken more of their chances: "In the key moments you're playing a high level game where chances are created.
"Most of time we were in the right place and we had more shots at goal than France.
"We were here to try and win tournament and we had the belief we could. We showed in our performance against the reigning champion we could have done."

I think I would've preferred us to have lost 5-0 in all honesty. That was heartbreaking.

Just heartbreaking to lose like that. England's best chance to win a world cup in my lifetime. See you all in another 4 years.
