  2. 'Rangers fans were a credit to the club'published at 10:51 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

The atmosphere inside the stadium was fantastic and the Rangers fans were superb, they only had an official allocation of 9,500 but the stadium holds 42,000 and I would say Rangers had two-thirds of the support inside the ground. Just a mass of royal blue.

The way they conducted themselves, backing their team, they were so dignified at the end. They really were a credit to the club.

Rangers were the first side in the history of the competition to reach the final after losing their opening two matches and they produced some memorable moments.

  3. 'Rangers were close to going down in folklore'published at 10:44 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

When you are a football fan it's all about the experiences and people will remember their excellent win away at Dortmund, they eliminated Leipzig and the fact that so many fans descended on Seville, 100,000 fans.

It's those experiences that once the disappointment has subsided they'll look back at what a great time they had in Seville. And people will look back and think it was brilliant because for Rangers to reach the final in the way they did was a real achievement.

It's such a shame that they weren't able to produce a win because the team would have gone down in football folklore.

  6. Can Ramsey save move at Hampden?published at 10:21 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Nick McPheat
    BBC Scotland

Ramsey, along with the rest of his team-mates, must dust himself down quickly with Saturday's Scottish Cup final looming.

Van Bronckhorst has a decision on his hands whether to start him, but after a gruelling and emotionally-draining 120 minutes, freshness will likely be required.

In Ramsey, Rangers have someone who has experience in delivering in domestic cup finals. In the 31-year-old's time at Arsenal, he netted winning goals in the 2014 (against Hull City) and 2017 (against Chelsea) FA Cup finals at Wembley.

After Wednesday's crushing loss, pressure will mount on Saturday as defeat would mean Rangers ending the campaign without a trophy despite their European heroics.

Van Bronckhorst will now be tasked with rousing his players for the domestic season's curtain-closer as he aims to win his first silverware as Ibrox boss.

"Of course it's not going to be easy to get them ready," the Dutchman added. "We are hurt and disappointed. We fly home [Thursday] and we have only one day to prepare.

"It won't be easy but we will be ready for Saturday to end the season with a trophy."

  7. 'Aaron took responsibility'published at 10:16 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Nick McPheat
    BBC Scotland

Ramsey's undoubted quality means if he was fit enough start, he surely would have. The Welshman played an hour of Rangers' final game of the league season at Hearts, but was only given the last three minutes of extra time in Seville.

Van Bronckhorst said afterwards that he was thrown on with penalties in mind, but the midfielder missed the only spot-kick in the shootout, resulting in an agonising defeat which left Ramsey inconsolable.

"Aaron of course is disappointed," the Ibrox boss said. "But he took responsibility to take the penalty. You can make it or you can miss it. Unfortunately for us, he didn't make it. You want to have players taking penalties who are ready and comfortable."

  8. Nine starts in four monthspublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Nick McPheat
    BBC Scotland

Rangers legend Ally McCoist hailed Ramsey as the club's biggest signing since Paul Gascoigne - and he wasn't alone in that.

Following the deadline-day move, a pivotal Old Firm derby was on the immediate horizon. Ramsey wasn't fit to feature - a constant theme - as Van Bronckhorst's men fell to a sobering 3-0 defeat, swinging the title in Celtic's favour.

The former Cardiff City and Arsenal player made his debut from the bench against Hearts four days later, before earning his first start away to Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup the following week.

Only eight starts have followed, with goals at Dundee and at home to Celtic in April's Old Firm league defeat.

There were signs of encouragement in an impressive showing in Rangers' second-leg victory over Braga in the Europa League last eight, but yet again Ramsey was set back by a first-half injury in the Scottish Cup semi-final triumph over Celtic.

While his penalty miss in Seville will create headlines, the biggest issue has been getting Ramsey's fitness up to scratch - a problem that has meant the midfielder has not started crucial games such as Wednesday's final.

  9. How Aaron Ramsey's Rangers move soured - but can he save it?published at 10:04 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Nick McPheat
    BBC Scotland

Rangers' January loan signing of Aaron Ramsey was a seismic moment for Scottish football.

Albeit short on recent game time, and with his best years possibly behind him, the Ibrox side had secured themselves a talent many viewed as too good to play in Scotland.

But after just 13 games in four months, the Wales midfielder's uninspiring spell took another disappointing lurch with his decisive penalty miss in Rangers' Europa League final defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt.

BBC Scotland looks at how the 31-year-old's move has failed to pan out as hoped and asks if it can it be salvaged in Saturday's Scottish Cup final.

BBC Sport Scotland's Nick McPheat has been taking a closer look at Aaron Ramsey, and how a possible shot at redemption for him is just around the corner.

Let's get stuck into that next...

  11. 'Such a crushing way to lose'published at 09:52 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

Rangers had chances. Right at the end of extra time Kemar Roofe got away down the right-hand side, cut the ball back and arriving in the box was Ryan Kent. Kevin Trapp, in a desperate lunge, spread himself as he moved out to his right side and Kent's shot was blocked by his leg. That was the chance and would have won it for Rangers.

Even after that they had a free-kick from James Tavernier that Trapp again saved, which was moving towards the top corner. Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Trapp was actually named man of the match.

But I think Rangers will look back and think they were so close to winning it and it would have been such a fantastic achievement. It was anyway, just to reach the final but I think for Scottish football to have two teams to automatically qualify for the Champions League group stages would have been huge.

So a real sense of disappointment and such a crushing way to lose on penalties.

  12. 'Pretty gutted this morning' - fan reactionpublished at 09:46 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Some reaction now from Rangers fan Maryanne Orr, who has been on 5 Live Breakfast.

"It will take a while to fully settle in obviously, but I'm devastated. It will take a while to just process it all but pretty gutted this morning.

"If you said it would be a penalty shootout at the start of the day or at the start of the season nobody would have believed you, but at that point there's no redemption, it's one kick at a time. It wasn't exactly a classic game.

"Absolutely proud, when you look back at the individual performances of specific players, how they've shone through and some of the nights at Ibrox with that atmosphere will definitely be things we can take forward. They will live with us forever but it will take time for the heartbreak to pass before we can reflect on that."

  14. De Boer on former Ibrox mate GVBpublished at 09:34 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

Former Rangers player Ronald de Boer, who played with Van Bronckhorst at Ibrox, has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live this morning.

The Dutchman said: "The season's not done. It is important he wins a trophy this weekend, and not end up empty-handed.

"[Rangers] can look back on the season so far with pride, especially the trip to Seville eliminating Dortmund, Leipzig and Braga. No-one would’ve thought they could make it at the start.

"He’s put Rangers back on the international map. It’ll hurt like hell now but can be proud in hindsight."

  16. 'Rangers must pick themselves up'published at 09:23 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Richard Foster
Former Rangers defender on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

Rangers had the opportunity to win the second best tournament in club football, but fell short. Frankfurt were the better side, they created better opportunities. Rangers got away with one, with the penalty. Despite that, I thought it might be Rangers' night because they were getting breaks here and there. It's still a fantastic achievement to get this far. They've got to find a way to pick themselves back up and not let this season finish with no trophies.

  18. 'Heartbreaking' final defeat 'hurts a lot'published at 09:12 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

More from Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who says the Europa League final defeat on penalties "hurts a lot".

But the Dutchman is certain he could not have asked for more from his side.

"With penalties it's a lottery - tonight we weren't on the good side," Van Bronckhorst said.

"We have to move on. We have a big game on Saturday and next season we have to start all over again."

Rangers still have the chance to end the season on a high as they face Hearts at Hampden in the Scottish Cup final.

  19. 'Something special about Eintracht'published at 09:05 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

Barcelona and West Ham dispatched. Eintracht would have been believing they deserved this triumph.

Then again, Rangers seemed to have the number of German giants going into this one...just ask Leipzig and Dortmund.
