What have we learned this afternoon?

Well, Sunderland are certainly a welcome addition back to the Championship with an entertaining team and a superb atmosphere at the Stadium of Light.

Coventry have a bright future too you'd think on this evidence. They were a fringe challenger last term and bloodied a few big guns' noses in the process, I can see that happening again.

That's as far as we go today though. Join us for Watford-Blades tomorrow night.

Relegated Watford, back in the Championship with a new boss in Rob Edwards, entertain Sheffield United at Vicarage Road tomorrow night.

I'm not one for opening day stats, but prior to kick-off I learned that Coventry had beaten the Black Cats twice in these openers, but that Sunderland went on to win the league each time.

What will their fate be this year? Time will tell.

Having set the Stadium of Light on its raucous way through Jack Clarke's first-half opener, Sunderland found out just how tough the Championship is in the second-half.

Coventry showed their mettle at this level, pouring pressure on the Black Cats, whose luck ran out late on when Viktor Gyokeres rattled in a precious equaliser.

What an enjoyable game though. Plenty to take away for both teams.

So that's it. All square and a point apiece for Sunderland and Coventry on the opening weekend of the Championship season.

This will be a test of Sunderland's mettle, having finally been breached.

Coventry haven't slackened off either. They continue to push forward with vigour.

Every pore of Mark Robins' skin looks like it is itching with frustration, because his side are doing everything they can to change their fortunes.

After Sunderland shut down Jake Bidwell and company down the left, the ball goes out to Fankaty Dabo on the right whose cross is smothered by Anthony Patterson.

Another corner goes Coventry's way but the ball in is cleared by the first man.

The ball goes back in, but no threat to the Black Cats.

Gustavo Hamer trots away frustratedly.

Coventry work a short corner routine to the edge of the box and the ball is swung in dangerously to the back post.

Sunderland just about hack it clear. But they're clinging on a bit right now.

Triple-sub for the visitors. Fankaty Dabo, Tyler Walker and Fabio Tavares are on.

Dan Ballard gets himself booked following a Sunderland chance, which is swept over the bar.

They've racked up the yellows this second-half.

Kasey Palmer's shot rises over the top. It's another chance in the Coventry column though.

He's impressed since coming on.

Kyle McFadzean tries to connect with a curling corner from the right for Coventry, but amid the tangle of players in the box, it bounces through without harm.

Coventry go for an intricate routine on the edge of the box but the ball across the area and shot is easily mopped up.

Matt Godden gets a free-kick out of Danny Batth, after he tussles with the big centre-half.

This is a great chance to load the box for Coventry.

Coventry have sent on Kasey Palmer for Jamie Allen.

Sunderland replace Elliot Embleton with Luke O'Nien.

Ross Stewart just beaten to the corner by Viktor Gyokeres, so it's another ball in by Alex Pritchard, but Coventry clear and break before the ball is given away.
