One of the contentious debates around games between Middlesbrough and Sunderland is whether it is actually a derby of not.

This Tees-Wear encounter, for the river buffs out there, is a rivalry which some embrace fully, while others - notably up the A19 on Wearside, feel there's only one true derby and that's with Newcastle.

Boro boss Chris Wilder, who being from Sheffield knows a thing or two about derbies, has no qualms about calling this one a derby.

"There's a little bit more to everything, and there are obvious connections," Wilder told BBC Radio Tees.

"Regardless of what they say, of course it's a derby. It's one of the closest games to play in, so come eight o'clock on Monday, there are going to be tackles flying in, it's going to be really competitive.

"We're a competitive team, they're a competitive team, and they've got that bounce of a promotion. I think it's going to be a cracking match."

There's plenty that unites Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Both are in the north east, both have an industrial heritage which has forged its landscape and its people. Both love their football.

There's Brian Clough, There's Julio Arca. There's Grant Leadbitter. There's hating Newcastle.

Tonight though, there's nothing that unites. It's all about winning. It's Middlesbrough versus Sunderland, in the Championship.

So whether you're partial to a parmo or prefer a pink slice, let's get things up and running.
