  1. Stansfield set for emotional debutpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

It's going to be an emotional day at St James Park this afternoon.

The home side could give a debut to 19-year-old Fulham loanee Jay Stansfield from the bench.

Stansfield is the son of former Exeter City striker Adam Stansfield, who died aged 31 in 2010 from bowel cancer.

One of the stands at the ground is named after him and the club retired their number nine shirt for nine seasons after Stansfield's death.

Today, his son, who started his career in the Exeter academy before joining Fulham in 2019, is likely to take to the field wearing the number nine jersey that his father wore with such distinction.

Jay starts on the bench for Matt Taylor's side and we wish him all the best.

Portsmouth are the early League One frontrunners and have firmly set their sights on promotion.

Danny Cowley's men have been formidable at home this season. After an unbeaten start in the league, Pompey will go into today’s fixture full of confidence. They’ve won their last four but won’t underestimate today's visitors.

Fellow high-flyers Peterborough start the day in fourth but will have to improve their away form, having lost their past three away games. Manager Grant McCann will be desperate to sort things out defensively, with recent mistakes proving costly.

But Posh have a reputation for their free-scoring style of play, so this game could go either way.

It’s a sellout at Fratton park and this game is guaranteed to be an incredible advertisement for the EFL.

    • Bolton Wanderers v Charlton Athletic

    Swansea v QPR (15:00 BST)

It's been a rough start to the season for Swansea.

Russell Martin's men have won just one of their first seven games and conceded in injury-time at Stoke on Tuesday to see three points become one.

Today's visitors QPR are in far better nick, they've won their past two games and scored six goals in the process.

Attacking midfielder Chris Willock is looking to score for the fifth successive game.

    Rotherham v Watford (15:00 BST)

Rotherham's unbeaten start to the season came to an end with a bump as they fell to a 3-0 defeat at Sunderland on Tuesday.

Watford will be glad that the transfer window closed on Thursday with forwards Ismaila Sarr and Joao Pedro still on their books.

Rob Edwards' men claimed a last-minute win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday and will be looking to build on that today.

  5. Squad Goals Championship game of the daypublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Preston v Birmingham (15:00 BST)

Well, well, well. Why have I picked this as my game of the day? I’m glad you asked.

With only one win in their last 11 visits to Deepdale, Birmingham will be hoping their new Red Devil signings Tahith Chong and Hannibal Mejbri are chomping at the bit to unlock a defence that is yet to concede a goal in seven matches this season.

Ryan Lowe’s Preston became only the third English side in history to begin their campaign with seven clean sheets after that 1-0 win away to Coventry on Wednesday. Even Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side in 2005 only managed six-and-a-half games. Eat your heart out, Jose!

Last season's fixtures gave us two stinking draws, including a dead rubber at St Andrew's, so we could be in for a thriller here. I’m backing the boys from Brum to break through this Preston side. They’ll have to knock hard to claim their first away win of the season, but something’s gotta give!

  6. Coventry in need of a boostpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Norwich v Coventry (15:00 BST)

Coventry are bottom of the Championship having lost three on the bounce, in addition to their earlier issues with the pitch at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

So they could do with a confidence-boosting win today, right?

Well they're travelling to Norwich, a side who they don't have a great recent record against.

The Sky Blues are without a win in their past four games against Norwich, a run stretching to February 2009.

  7. Can Millwall repeat the feat?published at 14:39 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Millwall v Cardiff (15:00 BST)

    MillwallImage source, PA Media

Millwall welcome Cardiff today with neither side on an amazing run of form.

The Lions' defeat by Burnley in midweek was their third loss on the bounce in the Championship, while Cardiff haven't won in their past four league games.

Millwall came out on top in February when these two sides last faced each other.

They last registered consecutive wins against Cardiff in 2003. Can they repeat the feat almost 20 years later?

  8. Wigan's enviable record on their travelspublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Luton v Wigan (15:00 BST)

Wigan travel to Luton today with a decent record away from home against the Hatters.

They have lost just once in their past six away trips to Kenilworth Road and they have a pretty fantastic away record under Leam Richardson.

The Latics have lost just two of their past 24 league games on their travels and are unbeaten in their first two away games this season.

Can they make that three, and put together a three-game unbeaten away run at the start of the season for the first time since 2010-11?

  9. Can Blackburn end poor run of form?published at 14:34 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

Blackburn v Bristol CIty (15:00 BST)

    George HirstImage source, Rex Features

Blackburn started the season really well but things have tailed off for Jon Dahl Tomassson's side after they won their first three games in a row.

Rovers are winless in their past four league games against Bristol City, who they take on this afternoon, and have failed to score in three of those games.

But there is cause for optimism amongst the hosts this afternoon.

Talismanic striker Ben Brereton Diaz remains at the club amid a summer of interest prior to this week's deadline. Can he make the difference for Blackburn heading into the rest of the season?
