  1. HALF-TIME - Cardiff City 1-0 Birmingham Citypublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

Cardiff lead at the break, and their only complaint is that they're not ahead by more.

Other than Scott Hogan's breakaway chance the Bluebirds have dominated proceedings so far and lead through Jaden Philogene's tap-in.

While it was an easy finish, the build-up play will have delighted Morison, and Cardiff moved the ball the length of the pitch before Philogene's finish.

Max Watters should have put Cardiff further ahead when through on goal with just John Ruddy to beat, but his effort was pushed just behind.

The home fans will be hoping for more of the same in the second half, while the travelling Birmingham supporters will want anything but.

From what I've seen today, I'd keep with him (Max Watters).

I'd be brave, just work with him, he just needs a little bit of luck.

Three minutes have been added on, mostly for the water break midway through the half.

Another chance comes and goes for Max Watters.

Again it's good work from Calllum O'Dowda down the right after Andy Rinomhota wins the ball back in midfield.

His square ball across the box looks destined for Romaine Sawyers, but Watters tries to gather it under his spell and instead loses control.

Cardiff may live to regret these missed opportunities.

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

Cardiff are still pressing as half-time approaches.

Bluebirds full-back Mahlon Romeo fires an effort wildly over the crossbar from a good position.

The ball ends up in the away section in the opposite corner of the ground.

I'm not sure even Jason Perry could find something promising to say about that effort.

  6. It should be two!published at 40 mins

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

Cardiff should really be two goals to the good.

Callum O'Dowda, arguably the best player on the pitch so far this afternoon, breaks clear and plays a perfect through ball to Max Watters who is through one-on-one.

The Cardiff striker never looks completely comfortable with possession, but he still forces a save from John Ruddy who turns it behind for a Cardiff corner.

  7. Collins' tackle 'outstanding'published at 38 mins

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

    Jason Perry
Former Cardiff defender on BBC Radio Wales

This is a goal, Hogan's in the middle making his mind up, just about to pull the trigger but the speed of Collins, the determination of Collins, the timing of Collins' tackle, he just sticks his foot in, outstanding.

As my laptop just somehow survived a colleague and his accidental efforts to feed it a cup of tea, I now feel ready to agree with Jason Perry that this is a special, special day.

  9. Postpublished at 35 mins

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

Jaden Philogene has looked a threat down the left since the first minute, and has another effort saved by John Ruddy after cutting in along the edge of the 18-yard box.

  10. Postpublished at 33 mins

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

The game is getting a little bit heated - not due to the weather - after a few tackles fly in from both sides.

The Cardiff bench can't believe they have not been awarded a free-kick as Callum O'Dowda is dragged down, before Andy Rinomhota concedes a foul in the centre circle.

  11. Postpublished at 30 mins

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

Completely against the run of play, Birmingham should be level.

Scott Hogan races clear and into the Cardiff box after a superb outside-of-the-foot pass from Juninho Bacuna, but full-back Jamilu Collins races back to slide in and stop what looked like a certain goal.

Excellent defending from the summer signing.

  12. Postpublished at 29 mins

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

We're back under way and Juninho Bacuna wins a free-kick on halfway for a foul by Perry Ng.

Loud jeers come from the travelling fans, who have not agreed with the majority of referee Darren Bond's decisions thus far.

Excellent start for Cardiff here, really progressive football compared to last season, and Birmingham have found it hard to contain them.

It's the best football I've seen since the last time I was here, watching Wales beat Ukraine.

Absolutely can't fault Jason Perry's enthusiasm though.

  14. Break time!published at 25 mins

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

As expected, both sides are having a quick drinks break in this blistering heat.

Thankfully for both there is a nice patch of shade covering the technical areas where they can get out of the sun for a moment.

Not sure Michael Pearlman will agree with you Jason.

But it certainly has been an impressive start for the Bluebirds.

I said the best eight minutes, this is the best 17 minutes and 27 seconds of football I've seen at this stadium.

What a ball from Wintle, inside the full-back again, O'Dowda passes it right across the six-yard box, takes out the Birmingham back line and Philogene is there and passes it into an empty net.

Great move, great goal and just reward from the start from Cardiff City.

    Cardiff 1-0 Birmingham

The Bluebirds continue to be on top after the goal and have a free-kick down the right after a foul on Mahlon Romeo.

Unlike Cardiff teams of recent years there is not much height in the squad, though they do have Cedric Kipre to aim for.

    A beautiful team goal.

The move starts in Cardiff's own area as Ryan Allsop plays Jamilu Collins down the left.

The diagonoal ball across field finds Callum O'Dowda, who plays a brilliant one-two with Ryan Wintle to break into the Birmingham area.

His low cross is put on a plate for Jaden Philogene - who is making his first league start for the club - and the Aston Villa loanee tapped home the easiest of finishes.

Lovely stuff from Cardiff, exactly what Steve Morison is asking for.

  20. The best, Jason?published at 16 mins

A decent start by Cardiff City here, absolutely on the front foot.

But "the best opening eight minutes of football I've seen in a long time?"

I feel like the bar you are setting might not be set that high, Jase.
