  3. 'A blatant block on our centre-back'published at 22:23 British Summer Time 24 August 2022

    Tranmere 1-2 Newcastle

Tranmere boss Micky Mellon to Sky Sports: "Huge credit to the players and fans. It was a Tranmere cup tie evening for us. I couldn’t fault anything the players did. We wanted to make it a contest and the players did. They stuck to the gameplan well. We were disappointed at the end."

On Newcastle's equaliser: "I’m disappointed. I don’t want to take anything away from the lads' performance. But there was a blatant block on our centre-back.

"To be done by a block was disappointing and naive from the referee. It was a blatant block. This was an important evening for our players.

"I saw the block coming. Both of his [Elliot Anderson's] hands are on my centre-back which allows the man he’s marking [Jamaal Lascelles] to come to the back. Schoolboy stuff. Newcastle are a really good side. Everything had to go right for us.

"I'm really pleased [with the Tranmere goal]. You have to be brave to play against Premier League teams. To create a chance like that... a really well worked composed goal.

"There’s only praise for the players. We’re a growing team. We understand it’s a young, developng tam. We’ll learn from mistakes. We’ll look at tonight’s game and see where we can improve."
