Some West Ham fans will never accept the London Stadium as their home or the rationale that lay behind the move out of Upton Park in 2016.

However, years of complaints about the sterile atmosphere inside the former Olympic Stadium was silenced during last season's European run. The noise that erupted around West Ham's thrilling last-16 victory against Sevilla will not be forgotten in a hurry.

Club officials believe the campaign brought the club closer together after years of in-fighting. Uefa praised West Ham for its pre-match 'show', which in English terms was innovative in its use of a live in-house DJ.

West Ham only put their 1,100 ticket allocation for the second leg on sale on 15 August, but expect it to be sold out well in advance of next week's trip to Denmark.

Given the club's recent European history, supporters will be taking nothing for granted.

Prior to last season, the Hammers' last three European campaigns yielded just four victories from 12 games, two of which came against a team of part-timers from Andorra.

But, make no mistake, Moyes wants to win. The Europa Conference League may not have the greatest reputation but, for West Ham this season, it will do just fine.

West Ham v Viborg (19:45 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham coach Billy McKinlay to BT Sport: "I'm looking forward to seeing Gianluca Scamacca and Maxwel Cornet. They've been training well. They'll bring freshness to the team."

On Angelo Ogbonna's first appearance since last November: "His injury has been progressing well. He's been training really hard. It's probably a bit earlier than we'd have liked but we have an issue at centre-back. [On him being captain] He's been a mainstay of this team for years."

On how important Europe is: "It's really important. We worked hard in the last two years to get there. Last year whetted the appetite a bit."

West Ham assistant manager Billy McKinlay wants the Hammers to go on another European adventure this season.

The Premier League side fell to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semi-finals last season with manager David Moyes and full-back Aaron Cresswell both sent off in the second leg.

Moyes has a touchline ban for Thursday's match.

"The manager will still be [in the stadium] and have an influence," said McKinlay.

"Circumstances happen and you just have to deal with it.

"There will be no complacency from anyone at the club and we know we will have to play well to get a result.

"Hopefully we can go one step further this year. Last season was terrific for everybody connected with the club. Unfortunately we fell a little short at the end, but we want to go on another European adventure this year."

  4. 'It's an absolutely fantastic thing'published at 19:18 British Summer Time 18 August 2022

West Ham v Viborg (19:45 BST)

West Ham manager David Moyes: "[Being in the Europa Conference League] is an absolutely fantastic thing.

"We finished seventh in the league last year and the fact people are talking about Europe is good.

"There are so many teams in the league who would shake your hand and thank you for European football.

"It is a great thing for West Ham. We have a play-off and we want to get through."

Viborg were playing in the Danish second tier only last year.

They won the second tier in 2021 and finished seventh last season and after a complicated European play-off process, qualified for the Europa Conference League.

This is the first time they have been in Europe since 2000 when they won the Danish Cup - which is their only trophy.

They have beaten Lithuania's Suduva and Faroe Islands side B36 so far this summer.

  8. Viborg players refused visaspublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 18 August 2022

West Ham v Viborg (19:45 BST)

Two of Viborg's top players have missed out today because of visa rules post-Brexit.

Nigerian winger Ibrahim Said and Gambia forward Alassana Jatta were not allowed to travel because of entry rules for non-EU citizens.

Both players have scored in the Europa Conference League qualifiers this summer.

Viborg said they had "tried everything" and consulted Danish football leaders, Uefa and embassies in both countries.

"It is very unfortunate purely sportingly, as both players would have had a role in the match," said Viborg sporting director Jesper Fredberg.

"But it is even more unfortunate, purely humanly, that the two miss out on the great experience."

West Ham are without captain Declan Rice, vice-captain Aaron Cresswell and manager David Moyes tonight.

The Hammers lost their heads in their Europa League defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt last season. Cresswell was sent off in the first half and Moyes was shown a red card for kicking the ball at a ball boy.

Rice was banned for an angry rant at the referee after the game.
