  2. 'This league is ruthless'published at 22:42 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Nottingham Forest 2-3 Fulham

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper: "A lot of it is self-inflicted I think. We are not managing conceding that first goal very well. We are not settled enough after it. There has been a few occasions now that we look vulnerable. We were OK in the first half and were fairly in control out of the ball. I thought we started the second half well but then they got a corner, scored from it, then the second goal. We need to look at ourselves first. It's as simple as that really.

"There are elements of our game where we don't quite look like a team yet and that will come with time and experience which we don't have yet because of the nature of the summer. There's some good bits of play then other times we don't look like a team and we are getting punished in those moments. This is the Premier League so there is scrutiny and we are no different. We need to sort ourselves out quickly.

"The supporters stayed behind the team and wanted us to get a third goal so we're grateful for that. We know where we were 12 months ago but we are not looking back on that. There are areas we have fallen short so we need to look at that quickly.

"We need to stick together and not hide away from it. If we do that we give ourselves the best chance of progressing. This league won't be easy. It is ruthless and we need to get up to speed quickly. It will be a difficult few days after the manner of the defeat tonight but we need to make sure we reflect then do our best to improve."

  3. 'It has been a really good start'published at 22:39 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Nottingham Forest 2-3 Fulham

    Fulham

More from Fulham boss Marco Silva: "We were the best team on the pitch definitely and deserved the three points. We know we made a mistake in that moment [to concede the goal] so we have to come back and win the game. After that we took control of the match.

"There were some moments in the first half but we did not do it at the speed. We had some set-pieces as well. In the second half the intensity was much quicker and more dynamic.

"It was a fantastic feeling for us even if we suffered a little in the last few minutes and they had belief they could score again. We deserved the three points. Congratulations to the players because they have worked really hard and showed the quality and of course, congratulations to our fans."

On the start to the season: "It has been really good. I have to be honest of course. I have to say as well some games in the beginning of the season we should have got more points because we deserved it. But a good reaction to the last defeat to Tottenham but it is just seven games. It is the start of the season. We go into the international break with confidence then we prepare for the next one. A lot of fights ahead of us. We are happy with how we started but we have to keep going."

Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates: "Absolutely gutted, only got ourselves to blame. Goals change games and then we couldn't stop their momentum and before you know it the game has gone.

"It's unacceptable. We know that. We need to put it right. We wanted more of the ball but you can control games without the ball and I felt we did that [in the first half].

"We have to show our character and what we're about. We've got a break now where we can assess things and then we'll have to put it right."

Fulham boss Marco Silva, speaking to BBC Sport: "We deserved the three points against a very good side. We spoke at half-time about being more dynamic as a team and to increase the intensity on the ball.

"I have to congratulate the players because it is really tough to do something they have done. It's the way we work and prepare for the game to learn every single day. We are a group and a unit working hard to achieve.

"We believe in ourselves and always trust in ourselves. Tim [Ream] is world class. He is class, class, class. His positioning since the start of the season has been really good."

    A great night for Fulham.

They have won a Premier League away match after trailing for the first time since a 2-1 win at Norwich on 26 December 2013.

  7. 'We cannot hide'published at 22:29 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Nottm Forest 2-3 Fulham

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper, speaking to BBC Sport: "It has happened again. A few games now we have taken the lead and not managed it well enough.

"We are not handling conceding the first goal. It has cost us the last two games. You cannot do that at any level, particularly this one. It is something we need to improve on.

"There are times when I see good things and we look like a progressive team. That five minutes when we conceded three times we looked like a new team.

"But that is where we are. We cannot hide away from it. It is something we need to address quickly. The international break was coming whatever the result. The group splits up now and there are parts of our game we need to improve on and the only way we can do that is when we are together."

  8. 'It didn't have much to do with football'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl to BBC Sport: "It was a game that didn’t have much to do with football. A game with not a lot of chances from both sides. They had one or two and we had one at the end. It wasn’t what you want to see.

"They were more aggresive and physically strong than we were and that was why we were never in a situation to create something. It was by far the worst game of the season so far.

"I don’t want to say we didn’t try but in every duel we weren’t strong enough. You have to try a different way when playing like that. We tried different players and shapes but nothing worked.

"They didn’t have a lot of chances. Neither did we. Small margins can decide games.

"With the last pass or finish, we are not dangerous enough at the moment. We need more punch in the front. We need to create more chances. We have to find the players who can give you that."

  9. 'The pretty stuff will come'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Southampton

    Aston Villa

Speaking to BBC Sport, Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard said: "It's a big victory. It wasn't pretty or stylish but, with where we were in the league, we knew we had to do it in a pragmatic way.

"I'm really proud of the boys' effort, application and commitment. We played better that we did last time. In football, you have to grind and fight and be committed and we worked hard today.

"We will get better in terms of style and possession and that will come but tonight was about the points.

"We had to back up our performance against Manchester City and there were a lot of eyes on us from the TV but we did it."

On his side's clean sheet: "It's how you build consistency by defending your box well. I've been critical about this group and the detailing if defending at times but today there were a lot of bodies on the line today.

"Maybe we tried to force it a bit tonight but as we move up the table maybe that's when the pretty stuff will come. It has been a tough period but I've wanted step forward and protect my players. I've tried to fight and move up this table. We have accepted a lot of criticism and it's about reacting and that is what we have done tonight."

  10. 'We didn't deserve anything'published at 22:14 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters: "Narrow [defeat] but we didn’t deserve anything from the game. They were more aggressive than us and won more duels.

"That’s the bare minimum. When you lose those battles you get punished. We didn’t deserve anything.

"We weren’t quick enough for second balls which killed us a bit. Offensively we didn’t create anything. Disappointing performance.

"Villa have been under a bit of pressure. We've been in that moment before. We knew they'd be a bit nervous but they came out firing. They were aggressive and ended up getting the result."

  11. 'Three fantastic goals'published at 22:12 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Nottm Forest 2-3 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham captain Tim Ream: "We had a good chat at half-time and to come from behind away from home to win is one of the most satisfying things you can do.

"We didn't stop and picked it up in second half and scored three fantastic goals. We take a lot of time and care to make sure we get the set-pieces right.

"I thought we saw the game out really well in last ten minutes."

  12. 'None of us were good enough'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters to Sky Sports: "I don't think we were on it today. They won more duels and second balls than us. They were a bit more aggressive than us.

"I can't say why. We work on it and spoke about it before the game. Last season they destroyed us with exacrly the same thing. Just this time we didn't lose by four goals.

"I'm really disappointed. I thought we got a bit better in the second half but not enough to get anything from the game.

"None of us were good enough today. We have to review the game and work on the training pitch to better it for the next game."

  13. 'I wasn't pretty but it feels good'published at 22:04 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Southampton

    Aston Villa

Speaking to Sky Sports, Aston Villa captain John McGinn said: "It's huge. We've been criticised this season for not grafting but tonight we fought for every ball. It wasn't pretty but it feels good.

"If I was watching on the television I would've turned it off. We graft week in week out but it's a waste if we don't perform at the weekend. I'm delighted of players like Phil [Coutinho] who have proved people wrong with good performances tonight.

"We have not been on great form. We are not clicking and creating enough chances but tonight, when we got the goal, we stayed strong. We limited Saints to very few chances and it's a huge win going into the international break.

"I was dreading going up to Scotland with a draw or a defeat so it will make the drive up a bit sweeter."

  14. 'Good feeling around the club'published at 22:03 British Summer Time 16 September 2022

    FT: Nottm Forest 2-3 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham's Harrison Reed, speaking to Sky Sports: "From the first whistle in our first game of the season, we have been on the front foot.

"We have made it difficult against the big teams as well. The manager had some words with us at half time about where we could hurt them.

"There is a really good feeling around the club."
