We wondered what Hearts' energy levels would be like, sometimes the first goal deteremines that. Now, they have something to hang onto and gives them that extra bit of wind

Lawrence Shankland is ready at any time. It's a bad mistake from Lamie and it's a shame in this game that a mistake has led to the first goal

Hearts are taking risks. They are overplaying and Motherwell are pressing high. They need to think what brought them success on Thursday, playing in the opposition half and being aggressive

  13. 'A massive game for both teams'published at 14:59 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Motherwell v Hearts (15:00)

Heart of Midlothian manager Robbie Neilson tells BBC Sportsound: "We felt today having more continuity - especially without a midweek game coming up too - allows us to keep that same group. One is enforced through injury to Craig Halkett and Lewis Neilson coming in.

"[Kio] will bring energy and physicality, and we're asking him to play a little more further than he is used to.

"Today is a massive game for both teams. A win today and into third ahead of the international break would be outstanding from us given we have had group stage football. That's the key for today to get three points and go into the break in a great position."

    Motherwell v Hearts (15:00)

Motherwell boss Stevie Hammell tells BBC Sportsound: "We can't look at any form of excuse, leverage or advantage today, we can't control Hearts. We can control how we approach the game and how we start the game, what our application and game plan will be.

"We are as prepared as we can be. We have the buy in from the players, we understand how difficult it is to get points on the board in any game, and today will be no different.

"Callum Slattery is a massive miss for us, he's been exceptional this season but we are hoping Barry Maguire can fill that spot. It's an opportunity for him to come in and impress."

  15. Motherwell meaner in defencepublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    Motherwell v Hearts (15:00)

A former formidable defender himself, it's to no great surprise new Motherwell boss Stevie Hammell has tightened things up at the back.

Motherwell have kept a clean sheet in both of their last two home league matches - a 0-0 draw with Dundee United and 1-0 win over Livingston. Chuck in their 4-0 victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the League Cup and it's a hat-trick.

In their previous 10 home fixtures before this, they only kept a clean sheet once.

They last lost three on the bounce on the road in the Premiership in December 2021, a run which included a 2-0 loss at Motherwell.

    Motherwell v Hearts (15:00)

Hearts recorded their first European group stage win in 18 years on Thursday, a hard fought 2-0 victory against RFS in Riga.

There were a few tired legs as the clock was ticking down, although you wouldn't put Cammy Devlin in that bracket after his dizzying run from deep put it on a plate for Alan Forrest to wrap things up.

It's a new dynamic for Robbie Neilson's players to deal with this season, so how will they fare?
