FT: Benfica 2-1 Rangers (agg 5-3)

Thanks for your company this evening.

There will be no Scottish sides in the Women's Champions League group stage this season.

Rangers did well to force extra-time tonight, but Benfica's class eventually came through. Until next time!

At this level, a game can turn so quickly. Domestically, Rangers don't get challenged like this all the time. Benfica's movement was superb. It was about managing the game when you're on top. Conceding a goal three minutes into extra-time was disappointing. That's where they have to be better.

Rangers midfielder Sam Kerr is still complaining to the referee about that penalty appeal.

She has a very fair point. It looks like a penalty. But overall, Benfica deserved to go through.

Over both ties, they created far more chances.

It's all over. Benfica progress to the group stage. Rangers were brave, but miss out.

    Tie over.

Rangers have a strong shout for a penalty for a mistimed tackle on Emma Watson, but they don't get it.

Then, a long ball up the pitch to Silva causes havoc. She gets away from three blue shirts before finishing calmly into the corner.

    Benfica 1-1 Rangers (agg 4-3)

    What a miss.

Cloe Lacasse skins a player on the break and charges forward.

The winger squares it, but her pass is overhit. A Benfica player turns back inside and lays it off for Christy Ucheibe, who side-foots over from 12 yards.

The goalkeeper was rooted to the spot. She just had to hit the target.

What a dramatic tie this has been. Seven goals, a red card, so many missed opportunities.

What do the last six minutes have in store?

  8. RED CARD - Lucia Alves (Benfica)published at 111 mins

    Benfica 1-1 Rangers (agg 4-3)

Now then. That was a bit bizarre.

There's a foul on the left touchline, and Alves is over expressing her fury at Jodi Mcleary.

Sam Kerr comes over and shoves a Benfica player over, and gets booked. And then Alves is also booked for some sort of protest.

It's a second yellow card, and she's off!

Rangers are up against 10 players for the last eight minutes!

  9. YELLOW CARD - Lisa Martinez (Rangers)published at 108 mins

    Benfica 1-1 Rangers (agg 4-3)

A late challenge from Martinez earns a yellow card, Rangers' first of the evening.

Benfica make a double change. Andreia Faria and Andreia Norton are off.

On come Christy Ucheibe and Jessica Silva.

Rangers start strongly. A cross comes in from the right, and Kirsty Howat gets across her marker at the front post, but heads it past the opposite upright.

It's down to the players on the pitch. They just need one chance. That's what they're playing for, that one chance to try to take it to penalties. One final push for Rangers.

  13. HALF-TIME ET - Benfica 1-1 Rangers (agg 4-3)published at 21:42 British Summer Time 28 September 2022

The first period of extra-time is done. Benfica hit back thanks to Cloe Lacasse's wonderful solo effort after 93 minutes.

Rangers have 15 minutes to force penalties...or grab two goals.

    Benfica 1-1 Rangers (agg 4-3)

The fatigue is definitely taking its toll on the players. The quality in the final third is poor.

Rangers are seeing much more of the ball than they did in the first 90 minutes, though.

Orschmann has gone out to the right, Mcleary is in the 10 position and Nolf has gone back into right-back. So they've not really changed shape Rangers.

    Benfica 1-1 Rangers (agg 4-3)

With tired legs, Rangers are trying to squeeze Benfica a bit higher up the pitch.

But the Portuguese champions are too slick and play their way out, eventually drawing a foul from Lisa Martinez on halfway.

Rangers boss Malky Thomson makes another couple of changes. Rahcel McLauchlan and Kayla McCoy make way.

Dina Orschmann and Jodi Mcleary are on.

  18. CLOSE!published at 95 mins

    Benfica 1-1 Rangers (agg 4-3)

A delightful flick over finds Cloe Lacasse, who breaks into a similar position from where she scored two minutes ago, but this time Rangers defender Lisa Martinez is on her back and the shot goes into the side netting.

Their confidence isn't dented at all, it seems.

Lacasse goes on another fantastic run down the left, and this time no Rangers player can get near her as she goes all the way and dinks the ball into the back of the net.

How much will that Rangers goal have dented the home side's confidence?
