    FT: Fiorentina 5-1 Hearts

Thanks for your company this evening. Hopefully Hearts fans have enjoyed their trip despite tonight's result.

It ends a horrible week for Scottish football, with three defeats (two of them heavy) in European football, and a missed opportunity for the Women's national side as they failed to reach the World Cup.

It can only get better, eh? Join us at the weekend for all the domestic action. Ciao!

  2. 'We didn't get close enough' - Neilsonpublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 13 October 2022

    FT: Fiorentina 5-1 Hearts

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson tells BT Sport: “Small margins in this game. At the start, we hit the post but we’re playing against a very, very good team.

“First half we didn't get close enough and, to the player's credit, we were a lot more aggressive in our press [in the second half] but still not enough to take anything.

"They're a very strong and physical team and we didn't match that. All in all, we didn't do enough to win the game, credit to Fiorentina they’re a top top team.

"We've said this whole campaign is a learning curve to play consistently at this level. First half we didn’t get close enough but second half we showed we can and hopefully we take that forward in the games to come.

"We’ve got to believe [we can still qualify]. It’s a home game [against RFS] so we’d like to try and take three points and that sets it up for the last game.

"The fans were absolutely unbelievable here tonight and it really pushed the players on.

"Disappointed in the first half but I’m proud of the players in the second half."

Obviously the wage gap between Fiorentina and Hearts is huge, but the counter argument is Latvian side RFS have managed to get draws against the richest sides in the group.

Scottish clubs are on the wrong side of a financial gulf, but the sheer size of the defeats is what is concering.

  7. 'Painful' night for Heartspublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 13 October 2022

    FT: Fiorentina 5-1 Hearts

Hearts striker Stephen Humphrys on BT Sport: "It was a painful night. We wanted to come here and get some redemption.

"Second-half we gave a good account ourselves but in the first half we let ourselves down.

"We've just got to focus on Aberdeen now and put it right. We gave them a lot of respect and time on the ball. If you give teams like that too much respect they punish you."

It sounds crazy to say but I thought Hearts did have a go at it tonight, certainly more than they did at Tynecastle. What pleased me enormously was their attitude in the second half. Fiorentina looked like they wanted to bury Hearts but they had very few chances in the second 45. It was always about a learning experience for them, now they need to get back up there in the league to get back here again and have a real go next time. You can't build belief in these situations overnight

The first half was a bit of a horror show, but in the second half they stuck at it. It was a good second-half showing from Hearts

Incidentally, Basaksehir have beaten RFS 3-0 in Istanbul. That means the Turkish side are through to the knockout stages.

To qualify, Hearts need to beat them and RFS in their final two matches, and hope Fiorentina take no more than a point in their games against the same opposition.

It looks extremely unlikely at this stage.

Hearts' record European defeat was a 5-0 loss to Tottenham back in 2011.

That record looked under threat at half-time, but Hearts have managed to steady slightly.

Fiorentina have undoubtedly slowed the pace, too.

Ooft the players are squaring up to each other. Fiorentina's Lorenzo Venuti is booked after reacting furiously to Orestis Kiomourtzoglou kicking the ball straight into him after a tackle.

Then Andy Halliday gets involved and is probably unlucky to escape a booking himself as he raises his hands a bit.
