  1. How Bracknell got this farpublished at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2022

    Bracknell 0-0 Ipswich

For those who don't know - for non-league sides, the FA Cup does not start here.

Berkshire club Bracknell have been through four rounds, and five games, to reach the first round 'proper' and earn the money-spinning tie they deserve.

1st qualifying round: Bracknell 4-1 Harrow Borough

2nd qualifying round: Chesham United 2-2 Bracknell

    Replay: Bracknell 3-0 Chesham United

3rd qualifying round: Yate Town 0-3 Bracknell

4th qualifying round: Bracknell 2-1 Banbury United

    Bracknell 0-0 Ipswich

Ipswich, second in League One, have been the quicker to settle on the ball, as you might expect.

Though we've already seen the obligatory game of 'head tennis' in midfield.

Kyle Edwards cuts into the Bracknell box but skies his shot out of the ground (which is easier to do than you might think).

Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna insists his team will pay non-league Bracknell Town full respect in their FA Cup first-round tie.

"Everyone knows the clear priority is the league, but the FA Cup is a special competition and the club haven't had a great record in it in recent years," he told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"We would all like to progress and hopefully come up against some big sides in later rounds and test ourselves. This is the start of that journey.

"We have to respect Bracknell and what they're bringing. They've won four qualifying rounds and are on a good run of form across all competitions."

Bracknell Town's Jamie McClurg and co-manager Carl Withers were "ecstatic" when the first-round FA Cup draw handed them a home meeting with Ipswich Town.

McClurg, though, insists he is now "pretty relaxed" about taking on a side second in League One - ranked a staggering 105 places above them in the English pyramid.

A former Bracknell captain, whose uncle also once managed the team, he told BBC Radio Berkshire: "It's a real proud moment for myself and Carl because we both supported and represented the club (as players).

"Yes, it is a bit of a dream tie, but it's a free hit for us because I feel the club has already won in terms of the amount of interest from fans and everyone."

    Bracknell v Ipswich (19:45 GMT)

It was 1976 when Ipswich Town joined the list of FA Cup winners as a goal by Roger Osborne gave Bobby Robson's side a 1-0 victory over Arsenal at the old Wembley.

In modern times, their slide from the Premier League to the third tier has been mirrored by a dismal run in English football's premier knockout competition.

The Tractor Boys have only won two of their past 23 FA Cup matches - against Lincoln City in 2019 and Oldham Athletic two years later - with eight drawn and 13 ending in defeat.

You'd need a pretty good memory to recall the last - and only - time Bracknell Town reached the first round of the FA Cup.

It happened 22 years ago when, despite the best efforts of 17-year-old goalkeeper Lee Cobby, they were beaten 4-0 away to Lincoln City after falling behind in only the seventh minute.

They are the first non-league team to play Ipswich in the first round proper since Hastings United in 1956 - a game Town won by the same 4-0 scoreline.

It's a tall order for the Robins tonight - but the same could have been said about Chippenham and Alvechurch on Saturday...

  13. Last, but definitely not least...published at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2022

    Bracknell v Ipswich (19:45 GMT)

Thirty-eight FA Cup first-round ties have been played, with Woking v Oxford United postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

That leaves one outstanding - and 'outstanding' is the word, as we have that classic match-up of a David hosting a Goliath under the lights.
