  1. Goodbye

Thank you very much John Stones. Get yourself back to training.

Time for us to say farewell but we'll be back on Saturday with all the reaction to the Group G and Group H fixtures.

Will they be as dramatic as last night's matches? Let's hope so.

In case you missed anything, here are some of the top stories and videos to have a look at from today. Quite a few involve footballs and paper strips:

  2. 'So many leaders in our team'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

More from England defender John Stones on Harry Maguire: "Harry is one of the leaders. There are so many leaders within our team. He's a huge character within the group. We see it around the hotel with how many people he mingles with and gets on with.

"That goes onto the pitch as well. Throughout his international career he's always looking to improve."

  3. 'Southgate gives us confidence to play out from the back'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on playing out from the back and how important it is: "It starts with how the other team sets up and recognising how we can exploit how they press us.

"How it started in the last three games, we've only come under high press in the first game, which was for about 20 minutes in the second game. We've been able to have good control of the ball because of teams not pressing but it leaves us with the challenge of try to play through the line and through the low block. We have gone long from goal kicks before, Harry Kane's aerial threat is a strength.

"The players we've got, everyone is so comfortable at playing out and got great qualities from doing that. Gareth [Southgate] has always given us that confidence to do that and given us one or two tweaks for how to break the press. The confidence comes form our experience of knowing when to do it and not do it."

  4. 'I don't want to put more pressure on us as a team'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on expectations: "It's always difficult when you see big teams or big players in teams that don't have the success that you want or don't live up to the expectation of the nation.

"We don't ever want to fall into that category. You never want to take anything for granted. All we can affect is what we're doing, what games we're playing and giving it our all. I don't think me speaking on others teams or generations can help. I don't want to put more pressure on us as a team.

"What we can control is the game on Sunday and how we approach it. Every game we've played it in we've tried, we've not always got the result we wanted. Look at the USA game, how well organised they were. We could've played better but we just focused taking improvements into the next game."

  5. 'Great to have Walker back'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on Kyle Walker and what it is like to play alongside him: "It is great. I am so happy to see him back and that he is feeling 100% and that he is feeling confident in his body.

"We've played a lot of games together and we know each others movements. We're not afraid of telling each other when we've done wrong and that is a great quality to have. How we played the other game after being out for so long is credit to himself. He is feeling great. It is great to have him back and firing on all cylinders."

On Walker's pace and whether it allows Stones and Maguire to play a higher line: "Are you saying I'm not fast? It is a great attribute to have. That is what makes a team. In certain situations we rely on him to get us out of trouble. We try and work on our weaknesses in training. We want to use his pace and physicality at both ends of the pitch, it is the best I have seen."

  6. 'We've tried to show our personalities'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on relationship with the media: "From 2018 we've tried to make it more open with how we speak and more relaxed, show our personalties more. Make it more personable, when we've been in these situations, the press officer has been a big part of that, trying to get our point across and understand the room as well.

"We know our actions and words create headlines. Creating the relaxed environment has helped us get our point across more freely."

  7. Post update

A mobile phone has just gone off in the press conference.

"Is that a fine?!" jokes John Stones.

  8. Post update

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on Manchester City team-mate Riyad Mahrez not qualifying for the tournament with Algeria, and whether he is a miss for the tournament: "1000% with how much he loves football and how much he loves international football. He was hurt after a good couple of years. I'm sure he'll be sat at home wishing he was here and watching every game, knowing him as a person. He'll be working hard on the training pitch and doing everything he can when this competition finishes."

  9. 'We've done a lot of work on penalties'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on penalties: "This started four years ago now when we won our first shootout in I don't know how many years. That was a big thing for us in that World Cup but then in the Euros it didn't work out for us.

"We've done a lot of work on penalties, on the small aspects and looked at what we've done in the past. The individuals needs as well, not everyone is used to taking penalties.

"It's a high pressured environment and we're trying to get used to being uncomfortable and making it easier for lads like myself who aren't used to taking penalties so we can be ready, be clinical if we do have to step up."

  10. 'We can be more positive'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on how this side compares to the team that were third in 2018 and reached the Euro 2020 final: "We're in the last 16 at the moment. I couldn't tell you. I'm not one for putting a title on it. I always aim for the highest thing and to win the competition. We're in it to try and win it. It is my belief that we can do it.

"That is not being over confident, that is being humble enough to see what goes on in our training and how the staff prepare and believing in ourselves too. We can be too negative, but we can be more positive and think about all the things we've done and how it has got us here and be realistic about our expectations."

  11. 'Looking too far ahead distracts people'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on staying focused: "I focus all my energy on the game in hand and how I can help the team if selected, giving everything in that time and then moving on to the next.

"I don't think we can look too far ahead, it's distracts people and side-tracks people. We have to focus on the next game."

  12. 'We don't want to take anything for granted'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on upsets at the World Cup so far: "It does focus our minds. It is the best competition in the world, that is why we've seen big upsets. We definitely don't want to be one of those that takes anything for granted and doesn't respect the opposition in whatever form. We've always shown teams respect, no matter what form they've got or players they've got. We'll continue to do that while I play for England.

"I am looking forward to playing teams we haven't played before and progressing. That is what we want to do."

  13. 'We need to get back to heights of past tournaments'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on pre-tournament criticism: "I can only concentrate on what I can affect and what I can do, what I believe in. That is looking back at previous tournaments, knowing we've hit these heights and need to get back to them.

"Since we've been here, we've worked hard on the fundamentals as a team and as a back four. We're still looking to improve but I've not listened at the outside noise, I'm just concentrating on what we can do."

  14. 'I've never seen anyone like Foden at his age'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on Phil Foden: "I've never seen anyone like Phil, at that age, with his ability and his football knowledge. It is the freedom in how he plays and how he expresses himself. It is frightening. I am a huge fan of him. I am lucky to play with him every day. I am lucky, Man City are lucky and England are lucky. I hope he gets what he needs on and off the pitch to help him play like he did the other night."

  15. 'Hard for a manager to pick starting XI'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England defender John Stones on attacking options: "It's the hardest part of being a manager is picking that starting XI. There are 11 happy players and the rest that don't play aren't happy.

"We've got an incredible group here and those that come on from the bench have made big impacts. Those players not in the team or coming off the bench have been extremely selfless, they put the team before themselves and sacrifice themselves for the team."

  16. 'Maguire's form credit to him'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

    Harry Maguire

England defender John Stones on Harry Maguire: "From the first game, he has given the best response. All three games he has been terrific. It is about us finding that partnership again and we have done that so far. It is time for us keep building and improving. That is great credit to him.

"I have been asked a lot of questions about him, but playing with someone for so many games for England, being through so many moments with him and knowing what he's gone through at his club and it speaks volume about him. I still believed in him and all his team-mates did. There was a lot of noise but he's tried to improve him and he's started the tournament really well. That is great credit to him."

  17. 'Extremely proud of the group'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

John Stones of England during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group B match between Wales and England at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on November 29, 2022 in Doha, Qatar

England defender John Stones on defence being questioned pre-tournament: "Great, I spoke before the tournament about why that was getting brought up and rightly so because of the summer that we had. Extremely proud right now with how we've dealt with the group.

"After losing form as a team, as a unit in defence and how we've come through. To keep two clean sheets, I'm extremely proud of the group."

  20. 'Conditions level the playing field'

England v Senegal (Sunday, 19:00 GMT)

    Danny Murphy

England's Phil Foden celebrates scoring v Wales in FIFA World Cup in Qatar

The hotter the conditions, the more fitness comes into it. If it’s not that hot, everyone’s on an even keel and the quality comes through. But if you’re a quality footballer and you’re not quite there fitness-wise, maybe 80%, the guy who is 100% but with a less good technique will catch you up.

I also think that you’ve got a World Cup in the middle of the season and a lot of these international managers are getting the squad together really quickly before they play a game. That for the big teams, who have so many players, so many different formations – the Belgians, the French, the English. ‘Who have we got? How are we playing? We’ll adapt.’

Most of the lesser nations, I feel, have a set way of playing and they’ll already know it before they get there because that’s what they do. They haven’t got the flexibility to change on the day. They know what they’re doing so all they’re talking about is application, desire.

The timing, the heat, the humidity – I think it gives a benefit to the teams who are well organised, super fit, super hungry.
