Two-winners Argentina will go into the game as clear favourites to progress to the last eight, but boss Lionel Scaloni wants them to leave that mentality in the changing room.

"They are a good team and this is football, 11 v 11," said Scaloni.

"So we need to leave aside favourites and play the game.

"They are a good national team, they had a good qualifying campaign. They have tradition at World Cups, and that makes them difficult opponents.

"We don't need to be over-confident. We will try to play our football and see what happens."

Australia boss Graham Arnold is preparing his country for only their second World Cup knockout game ever. They lost 1-0 to Italy in the last 16 in 2006.

"No disrespect to Argentina, but it's 11 v 11, and it's 10 blue shirts against 10 yellow shirts, and it's a battle," he said.

"It's a war, and we've got to fight that and make sure that the boys are in great physical shape, great mental shape, they've got great energy, and we go out there and give it all guns blazing."

The phrase 'Knockout Round soccer', used by the USA's social media account [12:15 entry], will not be taking off any time soon, judging by the rapid rate your down thumbs are coming in.

The Netherlands sailed through their group but I don't think they look anything special. In fact, they have been pretty underwhelming so far.

They are my left-field pick to win this World Cup but, to even get near that, they will have to improve on what they have shown us so far.

I am not sure that will happen, and this might be another game where the Dutch find a way to win, rather than dazzle us.

The danger for them is if they take the United States too lightly, because a lot of England fans thought we would beat them easily and the reality was very different.

The US are not just well organised, they are young and hungry and I like the way they play. My only worry about them is that they don't have a goalscorer in their team.

Christian Pulisic is an injury doubt, and if he does miss out it is a big problem for them. They struggle to find the net anyway.

Brazil's forward Gabriel Jesus and defender Alex Telles have both been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup after picking up injuries in their final Group G game against Cameroon, the country's football association have said.

Telles was substituted in the 54th minute of Brazil's 1-0 defeat by the African side, with Jesus leaving the pitch 10 mintues later.

Head coach Tite already has fitness doubts over winger Neymar and left-back Alex Sandro, who were injured in Brazil's opening game against Serbia.

Brazil face South Korea in the last 16 on Monday.

• They can make the quarter-finals in three successive World Cup appearances for the first time.
• Louis Van Gaal (W7, D3) can become the third coach to remain unbeaten in each of his first 11 World Cup matches (shootouts classed as draw), after Luiz Felipe Scolari (12 for Brazil and Portugal, 2002-2006) and Mario Zagallo (11 for Brazil, 1970-1974).
• USA have reached the last 16 in three successive World Cups (2010, 2014, 2022) for the first time.

USA have confirmed that Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic will be fit to face the Dutch.

Pulisic suffered a pelvic injury when scoring the winner against Iran, while USA striker Josh Sargent also picked up a knock in that game.

"With Josh we're a little less so (hopeful), but we'll see," said coach Gregg Berhalter.

"At this stage of the tournament it's go time. If you can push through it, you do. I'm sure he'll have that mindset."

Meanwhile, over in the USA camp...

Training took place yesterday at Al Gharafa SC Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.

A victory for the US today would mean a place in the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.

The Dutch were Group A winners in Qatar after a 2-0 win over Senegal and Qatar and a 1-1 draw with Ecuador.

The team has reached the tournament 11 times, but didn’t qualify for Russia 2018.

The USA drew 1-1 with Wales and impressed in a goalless game with England before beating Iran 1-0 to progress to the last 16.

So, what does Louis van Gaal make of today's opponent?

"They [USA] have an excellent team, I would say even one of the best teams," said Van Gaal.

"It will be a tough match, but it's nothing we can't overcome. We also have a good team.

"But I'm not going to downplay the USA. I think they're an example of what a good team is.

"There are teams who have progressed who are not good teams, but who have great individual quality."

Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal says the criticism of his team will not distract them from trying to win the World Cup.

The Dutch beat Senegal and Qatar 2-0 and drew 1-1 with Ecuador in the group stages, but some have accused them of not being attacking enough., external

"In 2014 it was exactly the same, it was not different. It was very negative," said Van Gaal.

"But, exact same thing now, same old, so I'm used to it and I think my players are also used to it.

"We're going to calmly continue on the path that we've embarked on."
