  2. Southgate refuses to look past Senegal

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on potentially facing France in the quarter-finals: "We play Senegal tomorrow and there is nothing else to discuss."

  3. 'Maguire forms a really important bedrock for England'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on Harry Maguire: "He is a good player. He knows we've got complete belief in him. He's had huge performances for England in two tournaments where we've had a huge degree of progress as a country. He's been a little bit unfortunate with changes of managers and philosophy and an injury at a difficult time. He has missed time. But, as with most players of that quality, it is about confidence. You can see that when he plays in our team. We play in a way that suits him. He feels the love of the fans, that was clear in the stadium the other night, and that was brilliant to see because that hasn't always been the case in the last few months with England. He has put those things to bed and he's helped to form a really important bedrock for our team."

  4. 'I feel physically in a really good place'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane on the timing of the World Cup: "I think from a player's point of view the timing of the World Cup will be the highest physically the players will be at.

"I think they're coming off the back of club level games, so they're match-fit. I think sometimes a summer tournament when you have a three or four-week gap, where you stop, it's hard to get back going again.

"That's why you've seen a really high level of performance. All in all from my point of view I feel good and physically, in a really good place."

  5. 'There will be pressure on both sides'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on other African nations supporting Senegal: "We understand there will be a lot of support for Senegal, not only at home, but from a lot of African nations. We will be considered favourites but that doesn't really mean anything in a one-off game. It doesn't mean there isn't any pressure for Senegal because every international team has great pressure in their own nation and from external as well. I am sure everyone understands that and knows that's the case."

  6. Senegal have 'togetherness as a team'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane on Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy: "I think they're two really good players, they've proven that on international and club level for many years now. Of course they're an important part of the Senegal team. But they've got loads more threats, loads more players.

"Their greatest asset is their togetherness as a team, that's what got them to be African champions.

"Of course, two really good players so it'll be a tough test for me and the team tomorrow but you're in a World Cup, so you're expected to play against the best players in the world."

  7. 'We've done our first objective, but we've got to get the next part right'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on his team and himself compared to the knockout game against Colombia four years ago: "I guess for us the biggest thing is the expectation and satisfaction levels. When we qualified from the group in Russia we were probably more excited, but we enjoyed the win over Wales. You've got to enjoy your wins. If you can't enjoy them there isn't a lot of point being in this quite frankly. Everything was geared around our first knockout win in 10 years, and that was almost our objective. We have to take it a step at the time, the same thing. We've spoke about that since the start, our first objective was to qualify from the group and we've done that. There was an awful lot of noise after our second game but we've stayed on track and qualified as well as anyone else. We've got to get this part right as well."

  8. 'We are ready for extra time and penalties'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on penalty shootouts and whether losing the Euro 2020 final against Italy will impact who takes them this time round: "Like any aspect of the game we are prepared. We have had a process that we've followed. We've had three shootouts and we've won two, inevitably the one you din't get over the line you reflect and you think about how you can improve those processes. We've done that over the last few months in particular, but of course there are so many other aspects of the game we have to get right. we are aiming to win the game and avoid extra time and penalties because you'd like to get a victory in 90 minutes, but if we need to go 120 minutes or beyond that we have to be ready for that mentally and physically and I believe we are."

  9. 'I feel as match fit as I'm ever going to feel'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane on tapering his form and if he feels the best since he's been in Qatar: "I think it probably goes back to 2018 in the World Cup, from a physical and mental side of things as the tournament went on, I felt like my performance dipped. I was trying to make sure that I was physically and mentally in the best place for the knock out stages.

"I've carried that into this tournament, I'd love to be sitting here with two or three goals by now. The group stages in this tournament have gone well.

"Going into the knock out stage, I feel really good, I feel fit and sharp. I feel as match fit as I'm ever going to feel. Only time will tell. I can try and come into the best form with these knockout games."

  10. 'We have learnt about rotation from last two tournaments'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on needing to keep his whole 25-man squad involved: "We have learnt a lot from having played seven matches in the last two tournaments and the need to keep the squad involved, emotionally as well as physically. We've had individual things across all those tournaments where we've had to manage people's minutes and try and get them back onto the field ready to be match fit and to this point we are really pleased with that progress. That means we've got everyone available for tomorrow but that is one of the areas we've learnt from. That is something you don't necessarily know unless you go the distance. It is only relevant if we win tomorrow.

  11. 'We've scored the most goals so far'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane on his assessment of England's performances so far: "We've scored the most goals in the tournament so far in the group stage. We've got a really good defensive record.

"I feel like we're in a good place. The group stage is just about getting through.

"Now, it's almost a second competition of knockout football, so we have to be prepared to face a really tough side tomorrow and be ready for anything that comes our way."

  12. 'The depth in international football makes it really tough'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on European teams being eliminated: "It just shows how competitive international football is. Those teams have had really good performances in recent tournaments. We know so many of the players in Belgium, Denmark and Germany and we expected them all to do well. The teams they played are very strong. All of the games are very difficult. This is our fourth team in the top 20. We played Hungary over the summer who are 30+ in the world and they are a very good team and well coached. The depth is really tough."

  13. 'Set pieces are an area we want to improve'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on whether his side have paid particular attention to set pieces after Senegal conceded against Ecuador from a corner: "No more than we normally do. We haven't been as effective from set plays as we'd like to have been yet so there is room for improvement. We go through the same processes for every opposition, to try and find areas to exploit, but of course every team is reviewing what they didn't do so well and trying to make those adjustments. Set plays, even throw ins now you have to battle to get the ball on the pitch. All those small details, every team in the world are trying to get better all the time."

  14. Post update

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on Asian teams at the tournament: "All of the teams have been tactically aware and played with great energy. They all have special individual players. There is a really nice combination. I wasn't surprised by Japan - we've watched them before the tournament because they'd played USA recently and we could see the level of the team. We weren't surprised by their team at all."

  15. 'Mane's absence has given Senegal great spirit'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on whether Senegal will miss Sadio Mane: "He is an incredible player and every team would want to have him, but Senegal have become strong in his absence and they've shown great spirit through losing him. We know it doesn't make a difference to the level of the fixture. We've got to be ready and be at our very best to win the game."

  16. 'We have seen the power of football growing'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on sides producing shocks at the tournament: "We have seen the power of football growing around the world in this competition. Historically South American and Europe have been dominate but we've seen in the group stage that Arab, Africa and Asian nations have all achieved big results against higher ranked teams. We all know in tournament football it is about fine margins and performing on the day. Those teams all have talented players and good organisation and coaching around the world now is at a really high level."

  17. 'There is no right or wrong with starting XI'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on players who came in on Tuesday against Wales delivering and whether it caused his problems: "It is a good position to be in, you want your players to be in a confident mood and our forward players certainly are.

"Of course you want to make the best possible decision but in some respects I am not sure there is a right or wrong. Whichever players we start with we'll need the bench.

"They all offer different attributes and it is just trying to get the balance of the team right and making the best possible decisions. It is great to have the whole squad available, feeling good about themselves, but the nice balance of knowing how difficult it was to get through this round in our last two tournaments. We know their quality but we've got belief in ourselves."

  18. 'I feel like I've been playing well'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane on his foot injury and whether it is on his mind that he hasn't yet scored in the tournament: "First and foremost my foot feels fine, it's been getting better day by day. I'm in a place now where I almost don't feel it at all so that's great.

"Form-wise, I feel like I've been playing well. The goals are what I'm going to be judged on most but as always I'm a calm individual and I focus on what I can do best for the team.

"If the goals come that'll be great and as a striker, I always want to be scoring goals for sure. We'll have to see how the game goes tomorrow, it's going to be a really tough game but hopefully I can try and get it off the mark."

  19. 'Senegalese players have enriched the Premier League'

England v Senegal (Sun, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate on whether more Senegal players playing in the Premier League will benefit them and whether it is an advantage for them: "I'm sure there are few surprises for the players playing in England. We have had a number of Senegalese players over the years. The players playing in England now, even the ones in the Championship are Premier League players. They have definitely enriched our league, we are fortunate that our league is so strong."
