  1. Mbappe absence ‘nothing to worry about’published at 08:26 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2022

France defender Ibrahima Konate said Kylian Mbappe is fine for Saturday despite being absent from training on Tuesday.

“We haven’t really spoken about it at all. He was just resting,” said the Liverpool centre-back.

“It was a little recovery session -the day before we had a day off. I think he decided to stay indoors with the coach, there is nothing to worry about.”

  2. 'England have to stop the transitions at source'published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2022

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    Karen Bardsley
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live's World Cup Daily

I think it is a no-brainer that Kyle Walker plays. The way the game seems to be evolving is that formations are just a start position, aren't they? It is about how you interpret the same and where the danger is.

If you want to go for that individual match - something like Kyle Walker v Kylian Mbappe - where do you lose where you're already dominating?

Depending on what the midfield looks like, if they go to a back three, could they be overran through the midfield? What does that look like?

Those are the things you have to take into the consideration. How can you just be a better team than France? How can you nullify Mbappe's strengths by stopping the ball coming into him?

England will just have to be really good at the basics and stopping those transitional moments at source.

World Cup 2022: Kyle Walker on facing France's Kylian Mbappe

One of the first things Kyle Walker will be thinking ahead of facing Kylian Mbappe is don't let him face you up.

The problem with that is that you're going to have to go tight, so any little movement that Mbappe makes can free up space in behind so the ball can be played in behind and it does become a foot race.

If you're going tight and you're thinking the ball is going to go into him then it is a very difficult situation.

It is about nullifying the supply into Mbappe if you can. That is out of Walker's hands, you're trusting other players. You've got to believe in yourself in one-on-one situations.

What I took from Walker's news conference is that he is so focused on the job in hand. When he knows someone is of equal speed to him he adapts his game. When he knows he is facing someone who isn't at quick he affords himself space because he knows he can get away with it, but when he plays an Mbappe or someone his focus changes in a game. That will be very interesting. He will back himself 100%.

  5. 'Bellingham will be getting France's attention - but he's not the only one'published at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2022

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live's World Cup Daily

Jude Bellingham will be getting particular thought from Didier Deschamps but I don't think he is the only one.

Bellingham at the moment is the one who can take the game by the scruff of the neck. He can spot a space and is such an intelligent player. He has a licence to play with real freedom and that is what Gareth Southgate has really seen in the third and fourth games.

The balance of [Jordan] Henderson alongside him and Declan Rice just frees him up even more. His ability to break up play has been something that has stood out for me in this tournament.

France will certainly be worried about him as can Adrien Rabiot and Antoine Griezmann stay with him? Those two in particular don't have the capability to match him. You are probably wondering about how you keep him as far away from the goal as possible - it might mean the full-backs have to stay close to the centre-backs. But, if you do that, then Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka can get on the ball.

There will be more than one player that France are thinking about how to thwart.

England just have to concentrate on ourselves.

We have Jordan Henderson, who is naturally used to covering in that right-back slot for Liverpool. He will naturally give that cover. Declan Rice will as well.

France have other players, like Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann, who like to get on the ball.

England's players will need to win individual battles all over the field. There is no doubt about that.

France will be just as worried about England as we are them. They will be worried about [Phil] Foden, [Jude] Bellingham, with the form they've showed. Do our midfield three outbully their three? They will be considering all of this as well.

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

Grealish on England's relationship with the fans: “The pundits and press will always have something negative to say about us, no matter what we do, but we have created a special bond with the fans – during the last Euros and the World Cup in 2018. I feel they believe in us now.

“They are going into each game thinking this team can win, whoever we play against. No doubt this game will be our biggest test yet, but you are never going to get to a World Cup final without playing the best and we are fully looking forward to it.”

Grealish on midfield team-mate Jordan Henderson, who he believes does not get the respect he deserves: "It’s weird because I feel like sometimes he gets a lot of stick, maybe not criticism, but a bit of doubt and I’m like 'this guy has won the Premier League, the Champions League and has got us to a World Cup semi-final and a Euros final – give him some respect'.

"That’s what I like about Hendo, when he is doubted a little bit he responds in the perfect way. I think he’s one of those characters that the more he gets doubted the more he wants to prove people wrong.

"He’s a brilliant professional, trains every day like it is his last. He’s one of those characters who, no matter what, you need in your squad."

Grealish on the squad harmony powering their success: "I want to start, but when you are here together you can’t be moping around. You can’t be like a bad egg going ‘why aren’t I playing?’.

"Listen, I am at a World Cup, playing for my country. Whoever plays out of us attackers, we have all got each other’s back and want each other to do well. That’s the truth, from my heart. I want everyone to do well.

"I know when I get my chance I will do my best to take it, but if I don’t start then I want Bukayo (Saka) or Phil (Foden) or Rashy (Marcus Rashford) or whoever it is to do well because we are all in this together.

"We might be rivals sometimes on a Saturday, but we all get on well, like brothers, and that is what keeps us ticking along.”

Jack Grealish has been speaking to BBC Sport about manager Gareth Southgate before England's World Cup quarter-final against France: "Fair play to the manager, he is changing things around. People do give him a little bit of stick and say 'why isn’t this person playing' but every call he has made has been right.

"Credit to him and long may it continue.”

While the football has been wonderful in this World Cup, yesterday there was a stark reminder of one of the darker narratives surrounding the tournament.

Fifa said it was "deeply saddened" following the reported death of a migrant worker at a World Cup facility in Qatar.

The Filipino national fell to his death while carrying out repairs at a resort used as a training base by the Saudi Arabian team,The Athletic reported., external

Football's world governing body said it had been made aware of an accident, without giving details of the incident.

It added it was in touch with the local authorities to request more details.

"Fifa is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our thoughts and sympathies are with the worker's family," it said.

"Fifa will be in a position to comment further once the relevant processes in relation to the worker's passing have been completed."

Qatar's treatment of migrant workers has been one of the main controversies overshadowing the build up to the World Cup.
