Morocco boss Walid Regragui is speaking to the media: "We have respect for Portugal, they have great strikers. But they know we will be a challenge.

"We are used to playing elite teams. We have a plan, and we will try to pull off a surprise, but we need to focus on us and getting better as the match goes on."

  5. 'One of the best keepers in the world'published at 11:48 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Morocco v Portugal (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

In a classic example of hijacking a news conference, the third question to France captain Hugo Lloris earlier was about Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Bounou was the hero of the last 16 as he saved two Spain spotkicks in their successful penalty shootout win over the European giants.

"I knew him already before this World Cup because of his performances with Sevilla and yes I do think he's one of the best keepers in this tournament," Lloris said. "He was decisive in the match against Spain.

"One of the great things about a World Cup is that it gives the opportuntiy to see players who play with less well-known teams but who are among the best in the world."

Pepe is still there for his captain.

The 39-year-old Portugal defender has been through a lot with Cristiano Ronaldo. Together, they have featured in eight major international tournaments. They also spent eight seasons together in the same Real Madrid squad.

Morocco's coach Walid Regragui has brought greater experience and spirit to his side, despite only taking the job in September.

That's the view of Moroccan journalist Amine El Emri who told BBC Sport that the team's successful defensive strategy actually predated his arrival.

Morocco have conceded just one goal so far this tournament - and that was an own goal.

"Everybody is willing to sacrifice themselves for their teammates, for his compatriots, for the next guy," El Emri said. "On the pitch, on the bench, even in the stands."

El Amri added that Regragui "demanded that all Moroccans make this sacred union around the national team", a passion that has fostered the spirit of the team at the tournament so far.

That is not to say he's not made contributions, with the manager's "touch obviously there" over player selection and tactical set ups, elements El Emri says have been working so well.

And give us a reason or two why.

  10. 'Pressure is normal'published at 11:33 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Morocco v Portugal (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Portugal

Santos on the pressure of the quarter-finals of the World Cup: "This is a very difficult moment for the players. They are all at the final phase of the tournament - but then this is normal for these players who play for big clubs in top leagues and in the Champions League.

"We have a situation that is exactly the same - anxiety, reaching the final, winning the final....

"I saw so much passion for Morocco in their last game. Passion for their team, for attacking the opponent. We have to deal with that and play well. To put into practice what we are trying to do. I don't think our match was perfect - far from it."

Morocco v Portugal (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Portugal

Santos on Morocco: "Morocco is a very strong team. They are an extremely well organised team with players who play for Chelsea, PSG or Bayern Munich. We have to find solutions.

"It won't be an easy match for Portugal - my players know what the opponent will offer and how competent they are.

"We have to play without fear and with confidence. If we do that, I'm sure we'll win but I think the Morocco manager thinks the same."

  13. 'A frank and normal conversation'published at 11:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Morocco v Portugal (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Portugal

Just before he said that, Santos clarified the process of leaving Ronaldo out of his XI for the Switzerland game: "I spoke to him after lunch on the day of the game and invited him into my office.

"For obvious reasons Cristano was not very happy about it as he has always been the starting player. He told me: “Do you really think it’s a good idea?” but we had a normal conversation in which I explained my viewpoints and of course he accepted them.

"We had a frank and normal conversation."

  14. 'Leave Ronaldo alone'published at 11:22 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Morocco v Portugal (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Portugal

Fernando Santos: "I think it’s high time to leave Ronaldo alone.

"He has never told me that he wanted to leave our national team and I think it’s high time we stopped with this conversation, that we stop with the polemics."

Felix on Morocco: "All the squads we have faced have played differently. We have analysed Morocco and their strengths and weaknesses. It'll be a complicated match."

On Achraf Hakimi: "We all know he is one of the best full-backs and it'll be an interesting duel. We will be defending our countries but I hope I will win."

Morocco v Portugal (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Portugal

Felix on how Portugal play with and without Ronaldo: "It is the same tactic independent of Ronaldo being on the pitch. He has skills other players don't have and vice versa.

"In the end we have our own identity and we focus on it. We will play the football we know how to play. It will depend on how our opponents attack but we will use the same modus operandi we have used so far."

Felix on the media coverage surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo: "I would like to leave a message to the Portuguese people and to the press.

"Portugal is in a great competition. We haven’t reached the quarter-finals for a long time. We should all be closer together and not try to get the atmosphere worse."

Felix on his similarities to Kaka: "Kaka was one of the best in the world. He was a great footballer, who won everything while I am just starting my career. Obviously it’s great to hear that kind of comparison.

"Everyone obviously dreams to play here and dreams to win. It’s a dream to represent Portugal in this competition and to play in a happy manner."
