  1. Post update

Here's the best of what England manager Gareth Southgate and captain Harry Kane had to say before England's World Cup quarter-final with France on Saturday...

  2. 'Bellingham has had remarkable tournament'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Gareth Southgate on Jude Bellingham: "We've got a lot of young players coming through our system. Jude Bellingham is obviously establishing himself in this tournament and has had a remarkable tournament. That 17s year group was exceptional.

"So many of them are playing in the Premier League already and quite a few have had their debut with us. Tomorrow there are two world class forwards on show, we'll there's more than that really, but everyone will focus on Kane and Mbappe because of the number of goals.

"We think we've got some good attacking players and it's a great game for supporters to watch."

  3. Rashford is 'in a good place'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate is asked what shape Marcus Rashford is in: "Marcus is in really good form. He hadn't been with us for 18 months but that has been a difficult period for him in terms of his form.

"I really like how he has been in this camp, very happy within himself, smiling a lot, enjoying his football, training well every day and dangerous in every game he has started or come on the pitch.

"So football wise he is in a really good place. In terms of social projects, a lot of our players have been involved in important causes and done a lot of good work in our country so I am very proud of everything they have done in that respect.

"He in particular made a massive difference for young children and families without the ability to provide lunches or school meals for their children. It was a cause close to his heart and he did incredibly well to create change in a difficult time in our country."

  4. 'Everyone on the pitch has 10 individual battles'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Gareth Southgate on defending Kylian Mbappe: "I think the same as every position on the field, everyone on the pitch has 10 individual battles and has to support their team-mates. Obviously there is a direct responsibility on his opponent.

"You have to expect the same with our forwards. You've got to work the area of the pitch zones to make sure there is good coverage."

  5. 'Sad for anyone to lose their life in work'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Gareth Southgate on the lives lost by migrant workers: "Sad to hear about what has happened, for anyone to lose their life in work. I haven't had the chance to speak with people at the FA about that. I'm sure they will deal that."

  6. 'There is a balance of competing and preparing'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Gareth Southgate on England's poor Nations League form earlier this year: "For us the Nations League was a very difficult competition, We were looking at a lot of new players. France were in a similar situation. We were in a World Cup year and there is a balance of competing and preparing for a World Cup."

  7. 'Ben left for personal reasons'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate is asked to provide further details about Ben White's departure: "As far as I'm aware the article written [about it] has used alleged so whoever wrote it didn't feel strongly enough that it was correct. Ben left for personal reasons and we think that should be respected."

  8. 'I back myself against any goalkeeper'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane on his friendship with Hugo Lloris: "Hugo Lloris is a fantastic leader, he leads by example and is calm in pressure situations and knows when his voice needs to be heard and when he needs to be strong with his worlds.

"I've learnt a lot through him and leadership skills to be captain of England. We've trained a lot together I'm always someone who backs myself against any goalkeeper and hopefully tomorrow I will be able to have chances to put away and I know I have to be at the top of my game to do that. I try to prepare as well as I can and be free and let me instinct take over."

  9. 'We have a plan' for penalties - Southgate

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate is asked about the possibility of penalties: "We have a plan but of course when you get to the end of a game maybe some players don't feel as confident or are more confident or have an injury. We have had all those situations before. We are as well prepared as we can be."

  10. 'Kyle will be focused and ready for Mbappe'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane about his friendship with Kyle Walker: "Me and Kyle have known each other a long time. He's a fantastic defender and the most consistent right back for the last 10 years and he's improved and is playing at the highest level.

"I know there's a lot of talk about Kyle and Kylian but Kyle will be focused and ready for the game. I'm always happy to play with him and he's one of the best defenders there is."

  11. 'I'm not quite sure what I will say yet'

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England captain Harry Kane is asked what key messages he'll want to get across to the team before kick-off: "Everyone will be talking about the same messages that we have been preparing for over the last six days.

"It'll be a small briefing in a huddle. I'm not quite sure what I will say yet. I will think about it over the next 24 hours."

"There have been some defeats that hurt that prepare you for nights like tomorrow where you have to be the very best version of yourself. We are ready to fight France for that place in the semi-finals."

  13. Post update

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane speaks about his friendship with Hugo Lloris: "Me and Hugo have a great relationship. We spend sometime away from football with our wives and families. 14. Post update

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

More from England manager Gareth Southgate: "We've got a lot of very good young players coming through our system and Jude [Bellingham] is establishing himself through this tournament.

"Tomorrow there are two world-class forwards on show, well more than that but everyone is focussing on Kylian Mbappe and Harry [Kane]. But we think we have some good attacking players in our team and it will be a great game for supporters to watch."

  15. Post update

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane on Kylian Mbappe: "Mbappe is a fantastic player and has proven that. He's a winner so we're expecting a tough game. He's one of the players that can cause a threat."

  16. Last-minute messages decided by players

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate is asked what he says to his players immediately before they head out to play: "Nothing at all. Harry [Kane] does it. By that point the messages are done and the work is done. It is up to the players. We leave it to the players.

"Frankly there were loads of times when I played when a manager spoke at that point and I thought, 'I'm ready, all you can do is mess it up for me right now'. So I have taken that onboard. I think it is an important moment for the players."

  17. Post update

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Harry Kane speaks about tomorrow's fixture: "We know that we're a very good team and there are good teams in this tournament. If we did lose tomorrow we would be disappointed as anyone.

"Between us and everyone involved we have a real belief and determination to be successful as an England team. We can only prove that on the pitch and winning games like tomorrow.

"Tomorrow isn't the World Cup final, it is just another step to trying to win the World Cup and we have to be fully focused on that."

  18. Post update

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate is asked if Kyle Walker is equipped to deal with Kylian Mbappe: "We always wanted to give Kyle the opportunity to be fit as he has been a very important player for us over the last six years.

"We have managed that process well with his reintroduction to the team. Kyle is ready.

"We are talking about one of the opposition but we play France who are a fantastic team and we are aware of all of their players and the quality of their whole squad.

"Didier [Deschamps] has created a team that is stronger than the individuals, which maybe wasn't always the case and we have to be at our very best to win the game."

  19. Post update

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

Gareth Southgate on the England team and raising standards: "I think a lot of work has gone in England with the English FA and the clubs to raise the standard of young player development. Obviously we've had a big focus on the national junior teams.

"This group are a team and they are very close and they've got a tremendous spirit and they have a lot of shared experiences together now.

"The older players make it a very comfortable space to come into. They let the younger player to settle in socially and be at ease and that's why the young players are able to come in and express themselves. It's a real collective and that is the strength of what we have got."

  20. Post update

England v France (Sat, 19:00 GMT)

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate is asked about Raheem Sterling's possible involvement against France after he returned to join the squad:

"I have spoken briefly with Raheem at training. It is great he is back with us. He wanted to train today which normally we wouldn't do after being on a long flight but it was a lighter session so there was no risk.

"He will be involved tomorrow but what that looks like, we have to decide...it is hard to tell what his level is so we will have to assess that. We are pleased he is back because he is an important player for us."
