  1. Tite leaves Brazil role

Croatia 1-1 Brazil (Croatia win 4-2 on pens)

Brazil coach Tite during his side's World Cup defeat by Croatia

Brazil coach Tite has confirmed he will leave the role after his side were knocked out of the World Cup by Croatia on penalties in the quarter-finals.

The 61-year-old said before the tournament that he would stand down regardless of how Brazil did in the tournament.

He took on the role in 2016 and won the Copa America in 2019 but has been eliminated at the last-eight stage of his two World Cup tournaments.

"It is very difficult," said Tite.

"The cycle ended and I said that one and a half years ago. I needed to have the full cycle and now I have the full cycle and have followed the moments."

  2. 'Historic and dramatic' - Argentine media reacts

Netherlands 2-2 Argentina (Argentina win 4-3 on pens)

    BBC Monitoring

    The world through its media

    Front page of Argentine newspaper

Argentine media was, unsurprisingly, ecstatic following last night’s narrow victory on penalties over the Netherlands, which sets them up for a semi-final against Croatia.

Clarin newspaper described it as “Messi’s game” while Pagina 12 said that Argentina won “with the magic of Messi and Dibu [Martinez]”.

For La Nacion, the game was “historic and dramatic”.

“This Argentine team already made history” it added.

On its front page online, the newspaper described the match as “unforgettable”, celebrating Lautaro Martinez’ converted penalty that “gave Argentina the pass to the semi-finals of the World Cup”.

    Remember last time?

Football looked a bit different iwhen England last played France at a World Cup.

Bryan Robson was a bit good, wasn't he.

  5. Sterling back in England squad - early team news

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

Raheem Sterling trains with England on Friday

England manager Gareth Southgate has a 25-man squad to select from against France after forward Raheem Sterling returned to Qatar and trained with the squad.

Midfielder Declan Rice, who had missed training due to illness on Wednesday, was again involved in the session, easing concerns about his readiness to play.

Striker Callum Wilson has been nursing a slight muscle strain, but also trained and showed no signs of injury.

France are likely to be unchanged from their last-16 win over Poland, with Mbappe having returned to training after being given a day to rest on Tuesday.

  6. 'France are scared'

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

    Julien Laurens

French football expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think France are scared of England’s attack.

They’re saying the same things about Harry Kane as England are about Kylian Mbappe but Didier Deschamps is also looking at the depth on England’s bench and wondering how he’ll have to change his team tactically when Gareth Southgate brings his substitutes on.

The French don’t really have that – maybe Kingsley Coman but that’s it?

  7. Kylian M-Bond-pe?

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

    No time to lose: L'Equipe

Sports daily L'Equipe features Kylian Mbappe on its front page, dressed as James Bond above a headline that reads "No time to lose".

Meanwhile Le Parisien goes with "Royal shock" while Libération also has Mbappe on the cover saying he's "hungry for Lions". Le Monde says things are about to get serious for Les Bleus.

Marseille's La Provence talks of "a crown to defend" on its front page and, closer to the Channel, northern daily La Voix du Nord observes that the match will be "exciting and undecided in the desert".

    England v France (19:00 GMT)

Before we pick through the bones of Brazil's defeat to Croatia in the World Cup quarter-final, let's check in with England.

The French media are just as excited about tonight's game as we are.

  10. 'Bonkers'

Netherlands 2-2 Argentina (Argentina win 4-3 on pens)

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on the World Cup Daily podcast

    It was just mental, bonkers!

How the Dutch got back into it with a brutally effective brand of football. Then in extra time, they stopped being direct and possibly played for penalties. And Lautaro Martinez’s penalty - what nerves of steel and composure.

I am delighted that Argentina have gone through for their fans. They have made this tournament in many ways and brought so much to this World Cup.

I wonder whether there will be that sense back in Netherlands, "Why didn’t we continue with the same plan in extra time?"

  11. Going down in history

Netherlands 2-2 Argentina (Argentina win 4-3 on pens)

Why will Argentina's dramatic quarter-final against the Netherlands go down in the history books?

    Lionel Messi's scintillating performance?

The heroics of Emiliano Martinez in the penalty shootout?

Ex-Burnley man Wout Weghorst's barely believable two-goal cameo from the bench?

Nope, it'll be because it set a World Cup record of 18 yellow cards in a single match. Dutch full-back Denzel Dumfries was also shown a red after the penalties as the atmosphere soured once again.

  12. 'Crazy' Martinez's 'wonderful' performance

Netherlands 2-2 Argentina (Argentina win 4-3 on pens)

You're never going to steal the show completely from Lionel Messi but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez gave it a pretty good go last night.

The Aston Villa keeper was the hero in the shootout against the Netherlands, saving from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Bergwijn.

"He is a bit crazy," former Argentina full-back Pablo Zabaleta said.

  13. 'One of the all-time great penalties'

Netherlands 2-2 Argentina (Argentina win 4-3 on pens)

    Tim Vickery

BBC Sport South American football expert

We saw one of the all-time great penalties.

Lautaro Martinez was King Midas in reverse in this tournament. Two goals disallowed in the opening game against Saudi Arabia on the finest of margins and then his confidence was completely shot. He would have been the enemy 100 times over.

The fact he was prepared to go up and take it shows his character and it was absolutely huge. That's why he’ll score so many goals in his career.

And to be honest, any other result would have been a scandal. It's massive for the tournament. Argentina were far far better over 120 minutes.

We can now look forward to a purist midfield battle in the semi-final

  14. Messi the master in chaotic Qatar classic

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer in Doha

Argentina's celebrations were a mixture of relief, pure elation and the increasing sense - especially after Brazil's demise - that this really could be their World Cup, although they under-estimate Croatia at their peril.

At the heart of it all was the masterly Lionel Messi, who now has four goals and two assists in Argentina's nine goals in the tournament so far. He also has 10 World Cup goals for Argentina, level with Gabriel Batistuta.

Messi is a member of this World Cup's elite at a tournament that has seen Cristiano Ronaldo marginalised by Portugal and Neymar injured and then eliminated with Brazil.

France's Kylian Mbappe remains but there is now the growing sense that Argentina's superstar will contest another World Cup final, a chance to atone for the defeat by Germany in 2014.

He may provide the silken genius in this team but it is also mixed with a steel that makes Argentina the fiercest of opponents.

  16. Argentina beat Netherlands in World Cup classic

Netherlands 2-2 Argentina (Argentina win 4-3 on pens)

It was a World Cup quarter-final that had everything - drama, niggle and brilliant goals.

Argentina had one foot in the semi-finals going into the final 10 minutes, Lionel Messi setting up one goal and scoring another, only for a remarkable twist.

Wout Weghorst pulled one back in the 83rd minute and, in the 11th minute of injury time, took the game to extra time by finishing off a clever free kick move.

That set up a cagey period of extra time, which resulted in the second penalty shootout of the day.

Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez proved to be the hero, saving two penalties to set up a meeting with Croatia.

  17. Watch Croatia stun Brazil

Croatia 1-1 Brazil (Croatia win 4-2 on pens)

This was a match which will long live in the memory - for good or bad reasons depending on your allegiance.

We have got a loads of video for you to get stuck into, starting with the game's highlights...

Followed by Marquinhos's decisive penalty miss...

But penalties wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Bruno Petkovic's late equaliser...

Given Jordan Pickford has brought it up - and yesterday's games both went there - we should probably talk about the possibility of a penalty shootout against France.

Last night, Lionel Messi went first, he scored and Argentina went through.

Neymar was down to take Brazil's fifth, but they were out before they even got there.

So who would be your five for England and in what order?

Harry Kane first or last? Pickford?!

    Let us know your thinking.
