  1. 'Kane will not get over penalty miss'

    Chris Sutton

Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think Harry Kane will ever get over it.

He is a brilliant footballer. There is a big debate over whether he should have taken the second penalty but I don't get it. If anyone else had taken it and missed, everyone would say 'why is Kane not taking it?'

It was a bad miss. He was brave enough to come out for an interview afterwards. A lot of people will remember this World Cup for that miss, which isn't fair given the service he has given to England.

SMS Message: We should be so proud of the England team and management. For the past three tournaments, the 'magic' of being an England support has returned. We must not forget the abject performances in major tournaments since 2006. Southgate has changed English football forever. It must not be forgotten that he was key in reforming the English youth system before he became manager. As manager he gave us fans memories we will always cherish. If he decides it's time to go, I hope he receives the credit he deserves. As for Harry Kane, his major tournament goal scoring record speaks for itself. from Rob

SMS Message: Let's back off and let Gareth have time to process. Hope he has a great Xmas with his family. Next game in March. Whatever happens he should be remembered as one of the best England managers and especially for changing the mind set of the team as a whole. Much of the criticism has been from those whose only experience is from video games. from Michael

  4. White returns to Arsenal training

    Ben White

Ben White has returned to training with Arsenal after his early exit from England's World Cup squad for personal reasons.

White did not feature in England's opening two group matches and missed their win over Wales through illness.

The Football Association announced the 25-year-old had left the England camp the following day.

Ghana midfield Thomas Partey and United States goalkeeper Matt Turner are also back training with the Gunners.

    Full story.

  5. Dave the cat is coming home

Football may not be coming home.

    But Dave the cat is!

The England squad have adopted a stray cat which spent time with the players at the Three Lions' base during their time in Qatar - and Dave the cat has now begun his journey to join them back in the UK.

It'll be four months in quarantine for Dave before he's allowed to be reunited with the England players. I wonder who he'll end up living with?

Nick: The only reason the FA should sack him is if we are sure we will get someone better. Only Howe would justify it I think. Otherwise he stays - we have a great chance at Euro 2024.

  7. Get Involved - do you think Southgate should stay?

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Chris: I think Gareth Southgate should stay until after the Euro 24 tournament. Then let someone else have a go but start to lay the foundations now for smooth takeover so as not to undo all the good work so far!!

SMS Message: Southgate should stay. He's brought stability, success and has helped develop some of our younger players into really promising assets for the future. Leaving now would risk losing that. from James

  9. 'This World Cup was there for the taking'

    Alan Shearer

    Former England striker

    Gareth Southgate

We are left with what-ifs, rather than thinking about England winning this World Cup, but I do believe we had a genuine chance when I look at the teams left in the tournament, because it really was there for the taking.

Croatia have only won one game in open play so far and do not have much happening up front. Argentina are not a great team either, although they do have Lionel Messi which is why they have always have a chance.

Morocco, whom England would have faced in the semi-finals, are well organised and dangerous on the counter-attack but I would have backed us to beat them.

Instead, we are going home, but I am sure the younger members of our team can use this experience to help them the next time we reach this stage.

So many of them had memorable moments to take away from this tournament, but it was Jude Bellingham who stood out for me as our outstanding player.

Bellingham is only 19 but, right from the start, his performances were so mature and he showed he is not afraid of anyone or anything.

He is one of the reasons the future is so exciting for England. This World Cup goes down as a missed opportunity, but we will go into the next Euros as one of the favourites, I am sure of that.

  10. 'When you give everything, you can hold your head up high'

    Alan Shearer

    Former England striker

    Gareth Southgate

On the plus side, we went toe to toe with the holders and favourites to win this World Cup, played well and created lots of chances. It just wasn't meant to be.

We lost, but we gave everything and when that happens you can hold your head up high.

I got a similar feeling after my England team lost to Germany in Euro 96 and then Argentina at the World Cup in France two years later. We also worked so hard and played in pulsating matches which were intense contests that were decided by the finest of margins.

After both defeats I came away thinking 'we could have won that' and feeling all the hurt that goes with such a narrow defeat - even though, when I thought about our performance, I was proud and there were reasons to be positive.

So I know how much this defeat will be hurting the England players right now, especially Harry Kane after his late penalty miss.

I feel for Harry, but that is the life of a top striker. You always have to put yourself forward for such a huge moment. You can't score with every chance you have, but some chances are bigger and mean more than others, so that one will hurt like hell.

It will probably haunt him for the rest of his life, but there is nothing he can do about that.

The biggest penalty I ever missed was for Newcastle against Sunderland in 2000 - and I still think about it now.

  11. Shearer: 'Unfinished business for Southgate'

    Alan Shearer

    Former England striker

    Gareth Southgate

I have no doubt at all that Gareth Southgate should stay on as England manager to take us to the 2024 European Championship.

I know he hasn't delivered the trophy we wanted in Qatar, but we have to look at the bigger picture.

Not only about how we have played at this tournament but also the progress we have made during his six years in charge.

We were a shambles when Southgate took over in 2016 and it had felt like we were going nowhere. We had been a laughing stock under Roy Hodgson at the Euros earlier that year and then had to contend with the embarrassment of Sam Allardyce's exit when it had felt like things could not get any worse.

  12. Pochetino & Tuchel interested in England job

    The Daily Mail

The Daily Mail is reporting that the FA will do everything in its power to persuade Gareth Southgate to remain as England manager.

The paper adds that former Tottenham and Paris St-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel are interested in the job should Southgate decide to leave, while Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers "has admirers at the FA".

  14. Will Southgate see out contract?

Gareth Southgate was appointed as England manager on a four-year deal in 2016, stepping up from his role as England Under-21s manager following Sam Allardyce's departure after only 67 days in charge.

That saw Southgate, who made 57 appearances for England as a player, become the fourth permanent manager of the national team in as many years.

But six years and three major tournaments on, he remains in his role having already become one of England's most successful managers by reaching a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and the final of Euro 2020.

The 52-year-old's current contract runs until after the Euro 2024 finals.

The question now is, will he want to see it out?

  15. Perspective?

Gareth Southgate has won six knockout games in major tournaments as England boss.

  16. 'England future brighter now than it was in 2018'

    England 1-2 France

    Phil McNulty

BBC Sport chief football writer in Doha

The countdown clock will now have to be reset for 2026.

It has been hanging there, hidden from public view, at England's St George's Park base for nine years - the timepiece that was set to hit zero with victory at the 2022 World Cup.

The clock was the direct result of former Football Association chairman Greg Dyke's bold opening keynote address at London's Millbank Tower in September 2013, when he set a much-derided goal of winning the tournament in Qatar.

In the end, England fell three wins short. Saturday's quarter-final defeat against holders France ended their hopes.

But time does not stand still. When the dust settles, attention must turn to Euro 2024 in Germany before another World Cup, to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

So where do England stand as they look to end the cycle of disappointment and become winners at last?

  17. 'Southgate building something'
