Guardiola, Klopp, Arteta. All given at least a year to sort the team out. All of them took more than a year to win their first trophy, give the Potterman a chance!!!!!!

    Dave J, Wales

All the Chelsea fans calling for Potter to be sacked should recall that Utd took a similar knee jerk reaction to David Moyes and it took them nearly a decade of "big name" managers and signings and only now are they beginning to look like the Utd of old. Meanwhile Newcastle have allowed Eddie Howe time and are reaping the rewards. Potter could be a successful manager for Chelsea, but we won't know for sure after 5 months!

    Barry, Bournemouth

  3. 'Mahrez smashes it in'published at 18:15 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 4-0 Chelsea

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Mahrez has been exceptional today. He took his first goal brilliantly and desperately wanted to take the penalty.

No saving that, he just smashed it into the roof of the net. No keeper was stopping that.

  4. Postpublished at 18:15 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Manchester City 4-0 Chelsea

Remember, this is a Manchester City side that have not needed to call on Erling Haaland, Kevin de Bruyne or Ilkay Gundogan - all unused subs so far.

    A humiliating day for Chelsea.

  5. goal

GOAL - Manchester City 4-0 Chelseapublished at 85 mins

    Riyad Mahrez

Julian Alvarez scored from the spot earlier on, but this one is taken by Riyad Mahrez.

And he fires it into the roof of the net, with Kepa Arrizabalaga going the other way. It's a four-goal thrashing, Mahrez with two of the four goals.

    Late, late drama.

Leander Dendoncker on substitute Dean Campbell.

The referee initially awards a free-kick on the edge of the box but then changes his mind and points to the spot.

  7. 'Clumsy'published at 18:13 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Koulibaly was too clumsy. The penalty was always going to be given.

  8. PENALTY to Manchester Citypublished at 18:12 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

Kalidou Koulibaly fouls Phil Foden. Clumsy. Man City to have a penalty for number four.

  9. Postpublished at 18:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 1-0 Stevenage

Ludwig Augustinsson cannot carry on. Lucas Digne is on. One goal, two injuries. The Aston Villa treatment room is about to get even more busy.

  10. 'Tough game'published at 18:10 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Gallagher has had a tough game, as have a lot of the Chelsea players. He just wants to perform.

  11. 'Nothing to suggest a structure or plan'published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

    Izzy Christiansen
Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Where does this leave Chelsea? Honestly I'm not sure.

Because there hasn't been much from this performance - apart from the opening 15 minutes - that has suggested to me that there is a structure or a plan.

  12. 'Nice movement from Chelsea'published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC One

Some nice movement from Chelsea, they had some players getting on the ball. There was a bit of confidence in that attack. Zakaria strikes it and it's a good block from Akanji.

  13. Postpublished at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

Chelsea win a corner after Denis Zakaria's shot is charged down by Manuel Akanji, but Conor Gallagher's delivery is met by Trevoh Chalobah and he can't do anything with the header.

  14. Postpublished at 18:08 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 1-0 Stevenage

They might be on course for the fourth round but this could be a costly afternoon for Villa. Having already lost Matty Cash to injury, Ludwig Augustinsson is down in pain after a challenge. Unai Emery does not need another injury.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 18:06 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

Another change for Chelsea has seen Mason Mount go off and on come Carney Chukwuemeka, the £20m teenage signing from Aston Villa.

  16. Postpublished at 18:04 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 1-0 Stevenage

Fifteen minutes plus stoppages. A combination of good defending and poor finishing means Stevenage are still very much in this.

Villa have struggled to put daylight between themselves and their League Two opponents.

  17. Postpublished at 18:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

Riyad Mahrez has a chance for Manchester City but shoots just wide. At the other end Omari Hutchinson has an attempt but it's a weak one, always going wide.

  18. Postpublished at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Aston Villa 1-0 Stevenage

Now 37-year-old Ashley Young is coming on for Matty Cash who looks like he has picked up an injury. Young was born in Stevenage but the visiting fans greet his arrival on the pitch with audible boos. Ollie Watkins is also on for Danny Ings.

  19. 'Takes years to build to this level'published at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

    Izzy Christiansen
Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

City are just waiting patiently for the gaps, for Chelsea to get sucked out towards the ball.

They just slow the rhythm of the game down and they've got players in every department with the ability to speed the game back up with a pass or run.

It takes a lot of years to build to that level where you've got number one to 25 in squad who are all on the same page and being able to dictate the rhythm of a match and know what's next.

  20. Postpublished at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2023

    Man City 3-0 Chelsea

Manchester City are in League Cup quarter-final action on Wednesday when they play at Southampton, before Chelsea play at Fulham in a tasty west London derby in the Premier League on Thursday.

Losing twice to Manchester City is understandable, but the criticism Graham Potter would face if they produce the same sort of performance at Fulham would move up to another level.
