On the site of the old White Hart Lane, under the dazzling glow of Tottenham Hotspur's modern home, Spurs fans of a certain vintage still marvel with wide-eyed affection at tales of Jimmy Greaves' goalscoring wizardry.

His was a scoring record that appeared untouchable, but now this generation has its own hero etched into lilywhite folklore - a one-season wonder turned England captain who has scaled the dizzy landmark set by the legendary Greaves.

A bit more to add on Harry Kane from the post-match presser. The England striker did mention he didn't get a good night's sleep.

Boss Antonio Conte said: "I want to underline that Harry played with a fever. He was not so good but he wanted to play because he understood the moment, he understood that he is a point of reference for us, for me and the other players."

  6. 'We controlled the opening 40 minutes'published at 23:10 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2023

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva tells BBC Sport: "Tough result for us. Overall, we probably deserved a result that we didn't deserve. It was a very good first 43 minutes and I think we lost a little bit of control in the last three or four minutes when they scored the goal. We lost our organisation and even though we had the chance to counter-attack, we lost the ball too quickly.

"The three or four minutes we lost control, they punish us. I said to the players before the match that the small details will decide the match and it did. We were clearly the best team in the opening 40 minutes and we controlled the game. We didn't give Tottenham a chance to counter-attack when you know they are dangerous and can punish you. We had a lot of energy, the desire and having some quality in different moments. We had two chances that we should have scored. They punished us with a great moment from Harry Kane and I think we should have set ourselves up in a different position.

"The second-half was a bit different, but with the same energy. We didn't find the spaces to break the Tottenham defence with nine players behind the ball [five at the back] made it more difficult for us. I think we had one or two dangerous moments and had more possession, but couldn't find the gaps in that particular moment.

"I can feel it in the dressing room. It is a process and we have to learn from this type of situation. It's new for most of our players playing at home to Tottenham. In the first half, they've waited for our mistake. In the second half, they set back and they were winning. We had to find different spaces, different gaps and different dynamics to go as well. We have to work on it and change the result against these types of sides. It reflects our ambition and our desire, even with a good performance at home against Tottenham. We are not happy with the result.

"Our goal is clear from the first moment and people have said we were favourites to go down again. We are here to fight and stay in the Premier League is what we want to do. Our position in the table is something to be proud of, but the Premier League is really tough.

"We have to prepare well for the FA Cup match and it is a different competition. After that, we will be back to the Premier League and have to be ready again because it will be tough and not make sense for us to change our goals.

"It was too early, but it was on the same foot [Aleksandar Mitrovic] - it was a stamp there. Let's see in the next few hours and tomorrow to see how he is to take conclusion. I think it's not something serious. It's something that is disturbing a little bit came from last October when he had that issue with the national team. He is not 100% fit, but much better in the last few weeks. Working day by day to prepare the match and let's hope it continues that way."

Tottenham striker Harry Kane tells BBC Sport: "A really important win for us, especially after the last couple of game and get back to winning ways. it is a tough place to come but we dug deep. To get the goal and equal the record was a nice feeling.

"I wasn't thinking about the record but whenever I miss a chance expect to score I am disappointed. I knew it would have broken the record but he made a good save.

"We are little bit behind where we want to be but tonight was important. We had a good talk amongst ourselves, just to get back to what we are good at, clean sheets, compact and hard to break down. Then we know we will have a chance to score and have players who can do that.

"Last night was a tough night, up every couple of hours. A bug or virus, I have three kids but I have a day off tomorrow."

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte tells Sky Sports: "I had a good answer from my players. I asked them for solidity of the last season and the will and desire to fight and to be resilient. A good result for the fans and we showed when you play as a team it is difficult to play against us. I was happy with the performance in the last few games but we had two losses, against Arsenal and Manchester City. Today has to be a starting point for us to give everything then we will see what happens at the end. We have to try to stay in the race for the Champions League and try to go to the next round in the FA Cup. It was important to speak in the past few days and to explain the situation. Compared to last season, we continued to score goals, but to concede 21 goals in 10 games it wasn't positive. But I am happy with the response.

"When I see this attitude, desire and helping each other, for me it is very important. If we want to do well and continue to dream, for sure the first thing we should not lose is the desire to be a team. Everytime it happens, it will be difficult to play against us.

"This season, only Arsenal have not had a difficulty. You can find a period of difficulty but I know in this period you can improve. Now we are fifth in the table, we are keeping the expectation but at the same time we want to fight until the end and we will see what happens.

"I am really proud to be Tottenham manager. I had the possibility of being the manger of an important club, it makes me proud and this has to be clear to everybody. For this reason I want to fight until the end with my players. We are a team that works a lot and under this aspect I can't tell anything about my players. In the last period, we were sleeping maybe because we we were losing some characteristic from last season. I spoke with my players and I have good players, but especially good men. They understand we have to fight until the end for the important positions, we have to be ready to suffer.

"When I accepted to become Tottenham manager, I was happy and I am happy. In every moment and every second of my day, my first thought is for my player and club and to improve. And to make our fans proud of the team. The Premier League is not simple, it is difficult and there are many clubs ready to spend a lot of money to for the team. We are in the right direction then we will see. The most important thing for me is to work with my players and to have a good relationship with the club."

  11. 'Good answer from my players'published at 22:46 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2023

    FT: Fulham 0-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte tells BBC Sport: "It was a big win after two consecutive defeats against Arsenal and Man City. It was a really important to win today because Fulham are having a fantastic season. If they won the game, they would climb up the table. For us, it was important to get the three points, especially when many teams are coming in front of us or fighting for a place in next season's Champions League.

"We have to try and stay in the race. A clean sheet and had a good answer from my players because during the week, we spoke about the difference in comparison to last season - not the goals we are looking to achieve, but especially for the goals we've conceded.

"We conceded a lot of goals compared to last season. For this reason, we have to try and improve today to finish the game with a clean sheet. It was important for Hugo Lloris and we showed great solidity in the second half. We tried to get a chance, but we didn't take an important risk and for this reason, I am really happy because this win is important for the confidence for our heads and minds.

"We are talking about Harry Kane as a special player and special person. He wanted to play and wanted to help the team. In this situation, you can see the human respect which is very important. The important thing is to have a good man because in difficulty, Kane will help you to overcome a difficult situation."

  12. 'We want to fight'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2023

    FT: Fulham 0-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham striker Harry Kane tells Sky Sports: "It was a tough game, a really important three points for us today after the last two results. Not an easy place to come, playing against a very good side but we dug deep. A tough week but a clean sheet and good 1-0 win.

"It has been difficult, whenever you give away a lead and a 2-0 one at half-time is more difficult to take. We wanted to get back to basics and clean sheet will be important if we want to stay by the Champions League spots. We wanted to be compact and suffer a bit in stages. Tonight was a good sign.

"I could see Son Heung-min had space and once he got the ball I wanted to get in a position to get half a yard. I pointed I wanted it on my left and if I got half a yard I can get my shot away. I used the defender to get he bend around him and then it is hard for the goalkeeper because he is unsighted.

"I train a lot with my finishing with mannequins or the opposition, the keeper was unsighted and sometimes it does not even have to be in the corner. Thankfully there was enough bend on it.

"We will see what happens, I am always ready to play. The FA Cup is important for us, last season was disappointing because we got knocked out at Middlesbrough. We will see what the manager says but I will be ready.

"We came strong towards the end of last season and got the Champions League spot. We have to go back what we are good at, clean sheets and being compact. Hopefully we can use the victory as momentum but plenty of games to come and a lot to play for this year.

"Antonio Conte has been through a difficult time outside football with his personal life. Being a part of the team it is not just the players, but the manager and staff and being there for each other. We want to win every game for him and we want to repay him with victories. We had a good meeting with the manager to talk about what we are good at, we want to fight, he is a passionate manager and want to keep working had for him."

Year after year Harry Kane delivers. He’s always there scoring 25 or 30 goals a season.

When you think of the greats of the Premier League, the First Division before that, he's one of the best we've seen. At the end of his career he’ll go down as Tottenham’s greatest ever player.
