Marcus Rashford says there is no time to dwell on either England's untimely World Cup exit or the debate about whether he should have had more involvement in the quarter-final defeat by France.

Rashford was back in action for Manchester United 11 days after he ended his time in Qatar by curling an injury-time free-kick inches over the French bar.

There was no sense of a hangover from the striker, who provided the high point of a 2-0 EFL Cup win over Championship outfit Burnley by scoring a superb solo goal, driving his shot into the bottom corner after beating two defenders at the end of a run that began 10 yards inside his own half.

"There is no time to feel sorry for yourself," Rashford told Sky Sports.

"It's more emotions-wise because it was such a disappointing feeling to be knocked out [of the World Cup]. You have to pick yourselves up and we did that today."

Erik ten Hag was delighted with the performance of Marcus Rashford, who took his tally to nine for the season with Manchester United’s second goal against Burnleyin the Carabao Cup.

The England forward has rediscovered his form under Ten Hag and his boss said he was pleased with Rashford’s all-round game.

"I think he invested a lot, once again, with a lot of runs in behind the defending line,” Ten Hag said. "Then, he scored a great goal after a dribble and with a great finish.

"He is on a very good level. His performances are improving from game to game. He’s a continual threat, has scored already a lot of goals and also does a lot of defensive work.

"I’m really happy with his performances and I hope and expect him to keep going with this attitude and level."

Centre-back Harry Maguire missed the game because of illness and Ten Hag admitted he did not know when his captain would be available again.

"Harry is sick and I do not know how that will develop," he said. "We have to wait and see if he will be available for Nottingham Forest [on Tuesday]."

Marcus Rashford wasted no time readjusting to club matters after his World Cup campaign with England as he scored a fine solo goal in Manchester United's EFL Cup win over Burnley at Old Trafford.

Rashford was one of five United players on duty in Qatar to make manager Erik ten Hag's starting line-up.

And after one, Christian Eriksen, had put the hosts ahead just before the half hour with a fine first-time finish after Aaron Wan-Bissaka has provided his first goal assist since May 2021, Rashford took centre stage 12 minutes into the second period.

Given too much space as Burnley's defence backed off, Rashford started running 10 yards inside his own half and didn't stop until he had sprinted into the box, darted between Jack Cork and Jordan Beyer and driven his ninth goal of the season into the bottom corner.

"I feel humbled and grateful to win this award," Wiegman said.

"Without this incredible team of players and human beings we could never have performed as we did. We have incredible staff. It has been fantastic.

"I've been the lucky person to come into this and work with these players. We played at Wembley of course and we broke records. We've made a change in society.

"Now little girls are walking around with the names of our players on the back of their shirts."

Wiegman is the first woman to ever win the Coach of the Year award since its inception in 1999.

The Lionesses won all six of their Euros matches, topping their group and going on to beat Spain and Sweden to set up a final against Germany.

They claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory at Wembley with Ella Toone opening the scoring before Chloe Kelly bagged the famous winner in extra time.

They then qualified for the 2023 World Cup with a 100% record, without conceding a goal.

England's men won last year's Team of the Year award and Gareth Southgate was Coach of the Year following their own Euros campaign, where they reached the final but were beaten by Italy on penalties.

  13. Mead 'proud' of winpublished at 08:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2022

"It's beyond words. It's something I watched growing up and I've seen so many amazing sporting heroes win it," said Mead, using crutches following her recent injury, of her victory.

"To be even nominated still doesn't feel real. It's a huge honour and proud one for me."

Sports Personality of the Year 2022: Lionesses' Beth Mead nominated for award

Having been left out of Team GB's squad for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Mead's success is all the more remarkable.

She scored in four of England's six games at the Euros, including a hat-trick against Norway in the group stage, pipping Germany's Alex Popp to the Golden Boot.

She has also helped England to qualify for next year's World Cup with a 100% record and without conceding a single goal.

The Euros was a first major trophy for the Lionesses and first for a senior England team since the men won the 1966 World Cup.

Domestically, Mead was in superb form for her club, Arsenal, before the tournament, scoring 14 goals and providing 19 assists in 40 appearances in the 2021-22 campaign, as the Gunners came agonisingly close to a first Women's Super League title since 2019 but finished second to Chelsea by one point.

Mead's 2022-23 campaign was shaping up to be just as prolific but has been cut short after she sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury against Manchester United in November, putting her hopes of playing at next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in doubt.
