That's your lot for a Sunday afternoon, time to tuck into the roast or whatever you're having.

On this evidence, Sunderland and Middlesbrough are likely to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

That's certainly a fillip for north east football; two strong second-tier sides to add to Newcastle flying high in the Premier League.

We'll be back next weekend, when the Championship and EFL jostles with the FA Cup for attention so far as the men's domestic game is concerned.

Here's what it all means then after that this afternoon at the Stadium of Light.

Middlesbrough stay in the top six, just, in sixth. They've got 42 points along with three other teams.

Sunderland are just a point outside, but to be fair, join the club. So are West Brom, and Preston just one behind them.

It's a busy old battle for the promotion places.

Sunderland's victory is their first against Middlesbrough in the league since September 2008 - seven attempts later.

They'd also lost four of the last six at home here, but this was a welcome boost to the Stadium of Light faithful.

Pleasing for those in red and white stripes.

When Boro went to 10 men, I thought they created good situations but maybe they should have created better ones.

But it hasn't been the case. It's about resetting yourself and going again. It doesn't mean you're a bad side if you lose a game.

Sunderland take the spoils and three big points in this top-end of the Championship derby against north-east rivals Middlesbrough.

They had the better chances throughout but had to wait until the second-half, when Ross Stewart scored after being bundled over by Dael Fry - who saw red.

With Boro down to 10, the game was put beyond doubt by a cutely taken goal from Amad Diallo.

The Teessiders were game, battling to the last, but the man disadvantage just made it too difficult to claw back in the Wearside chill.

Cameron Archer's perseverance and persistence take him into the Sunderland box, and he rolls a low cross to the back-post.

Chuba Akpom arrives, but is steered off it enough to see his shot trickle wide. Last chance for Boro.

'Oles!' greet every Sunderland touch from the home fans, with a cartoon 'boo' when a Boro player touches it.

Keep-ball time.

"Easy," chant the home supporters. Can't be too cocky though, as Boro win it back.

Duncan Watmore, another ex-Sunderland player in the Middlesbrough ranks, wins a corner with an industrious run down the right and into the box.

The ball comes in and it's chaos. Cameron Archer helps it into the six-yard box and Bailey Wright tangles with Chuba Akpom.

The Teessider obliges. No mixed loyalties for the man from Redcar today. He'll be proud of his side.

Sunderland's Abdoullah Ba remained pretty cool again but had the ball pinched by Jonny Howson.

To his credit, he steamed after Howson, nabbed it and even won a free-kick. Well played.

In the furnace of the derby, a beacon of icy composure.

Sunderland pounce on loose possession in midfield and romp forward through Ross Stewart, who takes the ball into the box, and slashes wide.

Had support there. But it's all the Black Cats right now.

Flurry of changes from both sides.

Jewison Bennette and Abdoullah Ba are on for Sunderland with Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts departing.

That second goal goes in and it is game over.

Since they've been down to 10 men they've played decent football and created chances here and there but that seals the three points for Sunderland.

Hayden Hackney gets in down the right again, in the Sunderland box, but his cross is boomed away.

There has been some gumption and guts shown by Middlesbrough this afternoon, regardless of the result.

Down to 10 and not overpowered.

Middlesbrough again get into the final third, passing around before Tommy Smith lets a shot go which was deflected behind.

The set-piece bobbles around, it's cleared. Comes back. Possession retrieved. Sunderland feeling the heat.

Middlesbrough get the ball around the Sunderland box, but can't find a route through.

Sunderland's Tony Mowbray has a Boss gilet on this afternoon, and that he very much is right now.

He will be slightly concerned that the visitors are gaining some opportunities in this latter phase of the game.

Moments will come and you've got to stay solid and try and carve out an opportunity for yourself.

Middlesbrough look for a raking ball out to Tommy Smith down the right, but the wing-back is shepherded off it by Trai Hume.

Sunderland's Dan Ballard has to be alert though, as Boro win the ball back and press, gaining a corner.
