Chelsea have now progressed from five Champions League ties after losing the first leg, the joint-most of any team - along with Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid.

Benfica have reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1967-68 and 1968-69.

Joao Mario is only the second Portuguese player to score in five consecutive Champions League games, after Cristiano Ronaldo - and the first Benfica player to do so since Eusebio.

Boss Roger Schmidt told Eleven Sports: "I'm very proud of the team. This is one of the days where we want to make a top game.

"We showed today that we are a great team and that we weren't there to defend the 2-0, but to win. We deserve to be in the quarter-finals."

Peter: With all the focus on the Chelsea game, credit has to go to Bruges tonight for getting as far as they did despite the final score. As for Benfica... Dark horses to win it outright like Porto back in 2004!

Scott Parker has only won two of his 12 games in charge of Club Bruges.

"It's a humbling defeat and a disappointing result," he said.

"Benfica were clinical, their technical quality extremely high. In this moment it's a bitter pill to swallow.

"The team did incredible things to get this far.

"For me it's been challenging, but the players have been brilliant and wanting to do everything they can to turn this around. All I can say is that I'm trying to turn this around and create a team that will start winning again."

Speaking to the media in the news conference just now, Chelsea manager Graham Potter said: “The players were tremendous and supporters were tremendous.

"We had to be against a team that were doing so well. Over the two games I felt that we deserved to go through. It was a special night."

Club Bruges head coach Scott Parker, speaking on BT Sport: "I'm not sure [whether I'll be there by the weekend]. I understand why you asked the question. I have been asked these sort of questions over a number of weeks now.

"I can't really control that at all. I am fully committed it trying to turn this around and that's what I will do."

Graham Potter is only the second English manager to coach a side to a Champions League knockout tie victory after Harry Redknapp's Tottenham Hotspur beat AC Milan in the 2010-11 last 16.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, speaking to BT Sport: "I've not seen the incident back, from where I was it looked pretty close, I'm not sure what more you can do with the hands."

After watching the replay: "It is a yard or two away. I am not too sure. I don't want to get in trouble. That in itself was disappointing but the fact they had a retake is a joke.

"For every penalty with such a slow run up there is going to be encroachment by people running into the box by a yard or so, but that's the game. They've made the decision and we've had to live with it."

"Both games were very close for both teams but, at the end of the day, they deserved it."

On the penalty being awarded: "I'm responsible for the performance of our team. I don't want to talk about the referee. I thought it was a tight call and a tight decision.

"I think the first 10 minutes you can feel the power not just from Chelsea but from the stadium.

"After that, we came back into the game but they managed to score and we didn't.

"We had a clear chance through Bellingham and only had a couple of counter-attacks to defend.

"We didn't create much later and that's the problem."

On Julian Brandt going off injured: "We adapted well and Gio [Reyna] came in to take over the position. We have enough quality in the team. We don't want to compete with Chelsea in the transfer market, we want to do it on the pitch."

With five shots and two chances created, Kai Havertz was directly involved in over half of Chelsea's 13 shots tonight. And that doesn't include his disallowed goal.

Dortmund boss Edin Terzic told Prime Video: "It's a tough result to accept; we're very disappointed.

"They were two very tight games. In the second half we produced a very dominant performances and created a lot of chances – in the end, though, it wasn't enough.

"We have to say, over the course of two games, Chelsea deserve to go through. But we would have deserved to go through too as it was two games that were very evenly matched."

Chelsea boss Graham Potter, asked how he is feeling by BT Sport: "I'm not sure! There is a lot of emotion in the end. It was tense in the end but the boys played fantastic. I am delighted for them to get the win and great for everyone here."

Know much about the penalty? "Not a massive amount to be honest. I knew they had encroached. It was him or Reece. Sometimes they have to feel it on the pitch. Obviously we have confidence in Kai. I wasn't watching it but delighted when I heard the roar.

"Taking penalties is not for me, so I am in awe of anybody [who does].

"There was a fantastic feeling in the dressing room. We have been through a toiugh period and this competition means a lot for us. We wanted to progress and get into the last eight and it sets us up for the next few weeks.

"We have to recover and prepare for Saturday when we play Leicester. It is great for the boys, two clean sheets after a tough period. You get that in life and it is about how you respond and the players have been fantastic.

"It was important we put pressure on them and get the crowd with us. It is not easy to do because they are a top team playing with confidence.

"Credit to the players they gave everything and over the two games I thought we deserved to go through."
