    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is a point in Newcastle's progression and about where they go next. Investment is needed to move to the next level.

This will hurt, the players will learn and they will get better.

  3. 'It just didn't happen in the box'published at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on BBC Radio 5 Live: "We played really well between both boxes today, we gave everything but we just didn't get those breaks at both ends.

"We should have defended the free-kick better and then the second goal is a killer.

"We did everything to get back in the game. We had chances but couldn't take them and that's why we lost.

"No complaints with how we played, obviously the scoreline doesn't say that, and that's where football can be cruel.

"Individually and collectively I thought we played well but it just didn't happen in the box and we need to work on that.

"I can't take positives from losing but I can from the performance. They've been committed and give everything for the club.

"I'm sorry we couldn't deliver for the fans today.

"The competition we are in now is at a very high level and we need to bridge that gap. Games are decided by small margins so we need to improve and hopefully we can enjoy more days like this."

Potatoe Waffles: Ten Hag winning the earliest trophy possible for Man Utd, still early days but hugely positives signs at Man Utd

ETH bringing the glory days back to Old Trafford and I have a feeling this could be a first of many. He is very impressive.

Never let it be said that Carabao don't get their money's worth out of their sponsorship of this competition.

Manchester United have just lifted the trophy for a second time, down on the pitch in front of huge advertising bill boards. They also get a good showering from some gold streamers.

Struggle to feel anything for a team who’s had a six year wait. That’s nothing in comparison to Newcastle. We’ll be back.

    Sarah, NUFC

Newcastle have been struggling to score goals in the last few weeks. They need to address this in the Summer transfer window.

Every Man Utd player gets a decent cheer for lifting the trophy. It's nothing compared to the roar that greets Erik ten Hag holding it aloft.

The medals are handed out, the Manchester United players gather together and Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes hold aloft the Carabao Cup!

The first trophy of the Erik ten Hag era at the club. You suspect it probably won't be the last.

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The signs are there that Man Utd are on the way back, they are starting to show their quality.

Ten Hag worries me. I think he's quality. I love his demeanour, his tactical decisions and how he works with the players. It's hugely impressive. I think he's a great addition to the Premier League and he suits Manchester United.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane speaking on Sky Sports: "You look at the players reaction and the supporters. They were desperate for success.

"All the build up was about Newcastle and their wait but five, six years for Manchester United seems a long time. They deserved their victory. They were efficient and scored two good goals. Hopefully it is the start of the good days coming back to United."

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Ben Mee
Brentford defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United were deserved winners. I was impressed with their defensive structure. They have flair up front but what Ten Hag has brought in to this team is a desire to work for each other.

  17. Newcastle players acknowledge fanspublished at 18:41 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

    Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Wembley Stadium

The Newcastle fans are giving their players an enthusiastic ovation as they walk round to acknowledge their support.

It has been a tough time for Eddie Howe's men, who have won just four of their last 12 games, have gone out of both cup competitions and lost fourth place in the Premier League to Tottenham.

They do need to regroup as they have a number of clubs breathing down their necks for a European berth. After the first two-thirds of this season, I thinking missing out on European football would be a disappointment at St James' Park.

  18. 'Outstanding from Man Utd'published at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Stephen Warnock
Former England and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

A huge second half from Newcastle but it was just too much for them to overturn.

It was outstanding from Manchester United from a defensive point of view and on from a counter-attacking point of view. Everything Ten Hag did today was perfect.
