  1. Thanks and good night

The first trophy of the season has been handed out.

It has gone to Manchester United, for whom it is their first piece of silverware in six years and possibly the launchpad for a very fruitful relationship with manager Erik ten Hag.

For Newcastle, the long wait goes on for a trophy. But they're making strides of their own. It's all about dusting yourself down and going again.

Speaking of which, we're all going for a bit of rest and recuperation before we go again this week with some FA Cup and Premier League action.

    Night all.

  2. Ten Hag left the trophy behind

    Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Simon Stone

    BBC Sport at Wembley Stadium

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag came into the media room to do his post-match press conference.

He spent around 12 minutes answering questions, then got up to leave - and didn't take the trophy with him.

He had to be called back to get it.

  3. 'We are still at the start of restoring Manchester United'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to Sky Sports: "Yet again the right spirit, we have a very good spirit to fight and give everything. It was not always the best football but it was effective.

"First you have to win the first one and that is what we did today. You can get inspiration from this and more confidence that we can do it.

"We are still at the start of restoring Manchester United to where they belong and that is to be winning trophies. This is the first one.

"They [the players] are good and connected and they also challenge each other and it is a good dressing room and in the moment it is difficult they help each other out. It is the best a manager can get.

"I just want to win. We invest from the start with the staff. They did an incredible good job with the players. The staff and players are together. There was a hunger and desire for trophies because Man Utd stands for trophies.

"Raphael Varane, Casemiro and David de Gea know how to win trophies and you need such lads on the pitch to point the team. They have the winning attitude they have to bring it in the dressing room, in difficult situations and that is what they have done."

  5. 'We want to be here on a regular basis'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie How talking to Sky Sports:

I thought we were in it right until the end but the goal never came for us.

We probably had the best chances at the start of the match. We can be proud of our performance but we were not clinical enough.

As much as we didnt want the final to be a distraction it has been. The players gave everything.

It is a process, we want to be here on a regular basis. There is a long way to go to be the team we want to be.

  7. 'We have a winning mentality'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea tells BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was great. It's difficult to describe and I'm emotional because it's been so long without a trophy. I'm happy for the fans.

"We've been in a couple of finals but we lost so we knew today we had to do it. We were against a difficult side but I'm so proud of the team. We have a game in three days we need to focus.

"I've been here a long time so it means a lot for me.

"We are still in three competitions and we have the chance to win more trophies. I feel the mentality of the team is a winning one."

On breaking Peter Schmeichel's clean sheet record: "To win the final and break the record in the same day is unbelievable. I love this team so it's a great moment.

"We are winning games and people are having an impact from the bench too.

Chris Balfe: De Gea is the best united keeper ever. To go past the great Schmeichel shows just how good he has been for us. Now we playing football he won't have to carry us people will release just how good he is.

  9. 'The start of a new era'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Man Utd goalkeeper David de Gea: The start for a new era. The team is ready for everything. We played against a good team and it is a great moment for us. Let’s enjoy and be ready again.

We showed today we can win trophies. So let’s enjoy the moment but go again.

  10. ''We want to create our own history'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Man Utd defender Luke Shaw: It feels amazing. We want to create our own history with the new manager and today was the start of it. It’s a great feeling. I am really happy and proud of the team.

Sometimes you can forget the people that aren’t on the pitch. People have always stuck by me and they deserve this as much as us.

The connection between us and the fans is easy to see. We feel the love from the fans and I hope they feel the same. This is just the beginning for us.

We enjoy tonight and then back in training. We are still in all the competitions and getting the taste for this, we want more.

  11. 'Man Utd can challenge for title'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Ben Mee

Brentford defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Man Utd are in the title race, anything can happen. Teams have been dropping points above them and there's no reason why they can't challenge.

They've built up a lot of belief in recent weeks and they will be full of confidence going into the final few months of the season.

  12. 'The hunger is to have more moments like this'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Marcus Rashford speaking to Sky Sports: "It is a mixture of all emotions but it massive for us to be involved in these types of games and something we have missed as a club, hopefully it pushes us to keep going.

"The hunger is to have more moments like this. I've been in finals we have won and lost and when you win it is massive for the club and as individuals and part of our and the club's history and we want to keep adding to it

"I'm happy and buzzing with the result. The boys and staff have all put a lot of work in to get here. The manager wants us to play attacking football and with that comes mixing positions. It is something we have worked on but comes naturally as well to a lot of our forward players

"He Casemiro makes a huge difference with his leadership and experience in big games. When he is on the pitch you feel that sense of security behind.

"We want to be involved in a lot of games and that means staying in the competitions."

  13. 'Maguire is a big character'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Ben Mee

Brentford defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Harry Maguire is a big character, he's been under a lot of scrutiny over the last few years.

I'm really pleased for him to get on the pitch today and to lift the trophy.

  14. 'Use this as a springboard'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Sky Sports

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane Sky Sports: "Erik ten Hag was brought into rebuild the club and get them to compete a bit more. I kind of disliked what they have stood for over the last couple of years with issues on and off the pitch.

"What the manager has done in a short space of time is fantastic. They have recruited well and have spirit. There is a lot of hard work and the players now have to use this as a springboard to get more trophies over the next few years, that's what it is about playing for Manchester United."

  15. 'Turnaround is transformational'

    FT: Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle

    Sky Sports

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville on Sky Sports: "Every single player is playing to their maximum and to their best and that is all you can ask. At the end of last season some of those players were part of a team labelled a disgrace by me and other Manchester United fans.

"The turnaround is transformational, the turnaround under Erik ten Hag is unbelievable.

"In about 2003-06 we didn't win a trophy and you feel like you are never going to be up there again. This was the catalyst for putting some belief into the squad. this squad will be dangerous with a medal around their neck because you'd like to think Erik ten Hag will improve them again.

"What they are doing is something I would have never imagined six months ago."
