  1. Man Utd 'were a defensive shambles'published at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2023

Derby defender Curtis Davies says Manchester United's 7-0 hammering by Liverpool was a reality check after heightened expectations this season.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily: "They conceded three goals in seven minutes and then it seemed like they went sulky.

"They were a defensive shambles, they were trying to kick people, moaning at each other and moaning at the ref, it was just very sulky.

"I don’t know if that’s a case of where they have got to recently, maybe they needed that reality check if they thought they were aiming for the higher echelons back at the top of the league.

"It just wasn’t like a Ten Hag disciplined team. It seemed like they had lost it and ultimately Liverpool punished them because defensively they were a shambles, they were at sixes and sevens, simple things they weren’t doing well and I just think maybe they needed this so they click back into gear for the rest of the season and realise where the best opportunity for more silverware is.

"Is it chasing the league? Or is it going for the Europa League and trying to win that? I think that is their best opportunity."

    Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd

Former Premier League midfielder Jobi McAnuff said Liverpool's incredible 7-0 win over Manchester United was "the stuff of dreams" for fans.

Reflecting on the game on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily, he said: "I still can’t quite believe what I have actually seen.

"7-0, given the form that both teams have been in, I don’t think any hardened Liverpool would have thought that and I was worried going into the game and thought it could be a big blow if Liverpool didn’t win.

"That forward line which has been questioned, it’s a changing of the guard. In terms of Gakpo and Nunez, I think at times Nunez has had some unfair criticism. They were unstoppable and particularly that third goal reminded me of Liverpool at their best over the last five or six years.

"It really was the stuff of dreams for any Liverpool fan and of course the stuff of nightmares for the Manchester United fans."

Nigel Reo-Coker added: "You look at Liverpool’s performance against Crystal Palace and then to get this result against their biggest rivals is just crazy.

"It’s amazing in a short space of time how your season can turn around, how the praise can turn around. Regardless of the score line, Liverpool were the better team and they performed. They performed like a Liverpool team of old."

Complete naivety from ETH. Should have shut up shop at 3-0 down and gone for damage limitation. You don't go toe to toe with your biggest rival when your players are showing signs of fatigue. I'm devastated with this result.

  8. Fan enters Anfield pitch and collides with playerspublished at 08:54 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2023

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp remonstrated with a fan who ran on to the Anfield pitch and collided with his players as they celebrated the final goal in Sunday's 7-0 thrashing of rivals Manchester United.

The supporter went to celebrate with Liverpool players and appeared to slip - colliding with Andrew Robertson and Curtis Jones, who both looked to be in some discomfort.

As the fan was escorted off by stewards, Klopp was seen shouting at the fan.

  9. Man Utd ownership moves onto next stagepublished at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United's ownership position has moved onto the next phase, with bidders being told whether they are still in the process and meetings being set up with potential owners.

This will involve full access being given to United's data room, which is when their financial situation can be fully accessed by those wishing to buy the club.

Sheikh Jassim and Jim Ratcliffe remain the obvious choices given they have come forward but there are other options.

Meetings are likely to be held in Manchester at some point in the next fortnight.

  10. West Ham sticking with Moyespublished at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time 6 March 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

West Ham's travelling supporters seemed to turn against David Moyes during the second half of their 4-0 hammering at Brighton on Saturday.

But, crucially, for now, the Scot retains the support of the club's hierarchy.

That means he will be in charge for Thursday's Europa Conference League last-16 game against AEK Larnaca in Cyprus.

West Ham play Aston Villa at the London Stadium on Saturday and then have a blank weekend due to Manchester City's progress in the FA Cup.

They are two places and a point above the relegation zone.

Tushar Vyas: Honestly is was more Sunday league defending from United that led to the result. Credit to Liverpool. They could have literally walked the ball into the net with that United defensive performance. Many times did. Onwards and upwards.

Allan McDevitt: ETH used the word 'unprofessional' over and over in his interviews. No one epitomised that more than Bruno in the second half. Given that he dropped Rashford earlier in the season for indiscipline, it'll be interesting to see what ETH does in the next game.

Greenisle: Can only assume that the emotional toll of the past month- the number of games, the comebacks, the cup win- caught up with Utd players. Hope ETH gives them a day or two off to mentally reset and move on, instead of extra training.

In seven days, Manchester United have gone from the high of their first trophy since 2017 with the Carabao Cup win against Newcastle United at Wembley to the pain of abject humiliation at Anfield.

Bizarrely, United were right in this game for 43 minutes, with Fernandes and Rashford missing arguably the game's two best chances before Gakpo scored and the sky fell in on Ten Hag's team.

United have had a heavy programme of fixtures but the manner in which they capitulated must be an embarrassment for manager, players and fans. There can be no excuses.

Argentine defender Martinez, normally so reliable and combative, was taken apart, especially when Salah led him a merry dance to set up Gakpo to settle the game with Liverpool's third five minutes after half-time.

To lose against Liverpool is a painful business at any time but to be on the receiving end of what was a record defeat in this fixture will send shock waves through Old Trafford. They must have thought it could not get worse than the 5-0 home thrashing last season - but this was and was inflicted in front of an ecstatic Anfield.

Manchester United must now lick their wounds and return to Europa League action at home to Real Betis on Thursday - and those wounds will hurt after this beating at the home of their arch-rivals.

Liverpool have resembled a shadow of their real selves this season. The old guarantees, such as intensity and firepower, have been missing far too often.

They all returned here - and how - in the most spectacular manner as Manchester United, who have been undergoing a revival this season, were blown away by a team in full cry.

Once Jurgen Klopp's side took control of a tightly contested game just before half-time, they were ruthless. They scored seven, and missed chances to get more.

Klopp wanted this to be a pivotal week in the race for the top four as his team look to salvage something from a season that has, to this point, been below par.

His players responded. Wolverhampton Wanderers were beaten at Anfield and United, to put it mildly, outclassed.

Liverpool won 5-0 at Old Trafford and 4-0 at Anfield in the Premier League last season while United had a 2-1 win at home early in this campaign to get the Ten Hag era going - and this was another remarkable game to add to that catalogue.

Gakpo was on United's wanted list before he moved to Liverpool in January and his two cool finishes showed why Ten Hag was a fan. Nunez demonstrated his growing threat with a double while Salah always rises to the occasion against United and punished them once more.

There was even the perfect finale of a goal in front of the Kop for Firmino, who announced on Friday he would end a great Liverpool career at the conclusion of this season.

Liverpool manager Klopp resisted a fist pump celebration in front of the Kop - but for him, this day could not have gone any better.
