Friends Bob and Roger travelled over from London on Wednesday night having attended the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

They met following the women's team three years ago and have been to men's games together too.

Bob, who was at the Nou Camp in 2009 for the men's semi-final draw with Barcelona (they went on to lose on away goals in the second leg), is hoping for a better outcome tonight but knows Chelsea are huge underdogs.

"It's great to be back here for another semi-final but Barcelona are so good," he told me.

Roger said it would be the team's "greatest ever win by a mile" if Chelsea beat Barcelona tonight but is excited for a "special" night all the same.

Asked if he wanted Alexia Putellas to come on, he said: "Of course. Yes, she'll make them better, but you come here to see the best players. She's the best."

2021 - Only one of the last 17 teams to lose the first leg of a two-legged Women's Champions League semi-final has then progressed to the final - but that was Chelsea in 2020-21 vs FC Bayern München (1-2 first leg, 4-1 second leg). Hope.

25 - Only two players have created more chances in the Women's Champions League this season than Chelsea's Guro Reiten (25), one of which is Barcelona's Aitana Bonmatí (26). Creators.

19 - Barcelona have won their last 19 home matches in the Women's Champions League by an aggregate score of 78-8, the longest ever home winning run in the competition's history. Formidable.

1 - Chelsea have faced 16 different opponents in the W, externalomen's Champions League and beaten 15 of them - the only side they haven't beaten is Barcelona (P2 L2). Task.

  6. Chelsea 'expect to suffer' - Hayespublished at 17:21 British Summer Time 27 April 2023

    Barcelona v Chelsea (17:45 BST)

Chelsea are under no illusions about the challenge they face to reach this year's final.

The Blues really had to dig in to stay in the tie in London and Emma Hayes says her side have to "remain calm" but "expect to suffer" at the Nou Camp.

"Nobody denies they are a fabulous team with an amazing history, particularly here," the Chelsea boss said.

"We have to accept that we will suffer more against Barcelona than anyone else. But we showed in the previous game we can defend.

"We will have to do that at an even higher level and the execution from us with the football has to be better. It's a football match. The game is 1-0. We have a fair and equal chance.

"This is a strength of our team. We are built to cope with the challenges. We like to suffer. We're as prepared as we possibly can be."

Should Chelsea win tonight, it will arguably be the greatest victory in their women’s side’s history.

Barcelona, with a 1-0 first leg lead, are giants in European football and are not used to losing at Nou Camp.

This stadium is usually a place of celebration for Barcelona fans. They don’t care what team it is - it can be the U15s, the first team or the futsal squad - if they are wearing Barcelona colours, they are expected to win.

While Chelsea’s press conference took place last night, Barcelona’s successful basketball team were playing in the stadium next door. We could hear the roar from fans as we left.

Barcelona’s media officer told us pubs around the stadium are packed out every night for various sporting occasions as the people here just love success.

If reaching a third Champions League final in four years isn’t enough incentive for the Barcelona players tonight, they will be reminded of their need to win by an expectant home crowd.

February 2019. That is how far you have to go back for the last time Barcelona failed to win a home game.

That was a surprise 3-2 defeat by Sporting de Huelva. Since then Barca have racked up 60 straight wins at home in the league.

In the Champions League, their run of home wins is a paltry 19... although that does date back to March 2018 and a 1-0 loss to Lyon.

So they are due, I suppose...

Barcelona may have the advantage in the tie and Putellas on the bench but they will be without Lucy Bronze in the second leg.

The England defender limped off during the first leg at Stamford Bridge and has since had keyhole surgery on her knee.

Before any Lionesses fans worry too much about the loss of another key player before the World Cup, Bronze is expected to be fit again within a month.

    Alexia Putellas. She’s back.

News of her return to the Barcelona squad after 10 months out with an ACL injury will no doubt have contributed to the surge in over 6,000 more tickets being sold overnight.

The two-time Ballon d’Or winner is a legend and an icon here.

Her name and face is everywhere - on the backs of shirts, on the outside of the stadium, on advertising boards near Nou Camp and in the official store.

She’s the one many people are coming to see despite the array of world-class talent in the Barca squad.

A young boy wearing her name on his oversized shirt and sporting a captain’s armband, was doing keepy-ups with his dad outside the ground beforehand.

If she makes an appearance tonight the place is going to erupt.

  11. Putellas set for return after 10 months outpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 27 April 2023

    Barcelona v Chelsea (17:45 BST)

As if the motivation of reaching another Champions League final was not enough, Barcelona have been boosted by the return of Alexia Putellas.

The two-time Ballon d'Or winner has been out for 10 months with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injury sustained on the eve of Euro 2022.

However, the midfielder is back on the bench tonight match and, with more than 71,000 tickets already sold, Emma Hayes is hoping Putellas' comeback can help bump up the numbers even further.

"We know every player is fantastic. Hopefully [Putellas' return] adds another 10,000 people to the crowd," she said.
