    West Ham 0-1 AZ Alkmaar

First chance of the second half.

It's much better from West Ham as Lucas Paqueta heads the ball on to Jarrod Bowen. The England winger cuts inside before catching AZ keeper Matt Ryan on his heels with a near-post shot. His strike though flies just off target.

West Ham look like the away team just sitting back

Soucek is a complete passenger. What is Moyes seeing that we aren't?

    AJ

It's remarkable how reluctant some pundits are to criticise Moyes. Too passive again.

Jarrod Bowen can't keep the ball in play down the right. He's hardly touched the ball in the second half. West Ham's front three have been very quiet.

Why is everyone expecting a team that has languished at the bottom end of the Premier League to outplay a confident team doing well in their league? WHU have struggled to score all season!

    Scott

AZ are 4th in the Eredivisie and have a goal difference of +27. West Ham are 15th in Premiership with a GD of -12. I know they are different leagues but why so much expectation that WHU should win?

    West Ham 0-1 AZ Alkmaar

It's all gone a little stop-start as West Ham's Lucas Paqueta gets a yellow card for a late challenge on AZ defender Pantelis Hatzidiakos.

Jordy Clasie then gets a yellow for time wasting.

Lucas Paqueta is not having a good game. He wins the ball back but can't slide Said Benrahma through with the West Ham winger making a teasing run.

A very different atmosphere around the stadium at the start of this second half.

Compared to the first half, which was celebratory with a lot of excitement, there seems to be a little bit of a slump as people make their way back to their seats.

Ignorant and wrong Mike. It's the cup winners cup reimagined and everyone wanted to win that!

    Tom

It’s not though is it. The Intertoto cup was essentially a Europa League/UEFA cup qualifying tournament. This is an actual chance to win silverware.

    James

It's a European semi final so they should be excited I'm a city fan but wish the Hammers the best of luck!

I'm genuinely surprised how sour some are for this match. Can't people just enjoy the ride of a bit of a Euro run? We can't all be in the CL that's football mate, celebrate what you can.

    West Ham 0-1 AZ Alkmaar

AZ Alkmaar have never won in England, this would be some result. They've been bright after the restart too.

  15. AZ controlling the tempopublished at 21:04 British Summer Time 11 May 2023

    West Ham 0-1 AZ Alkmaar

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the London Stadium

I mentioned earlier on that AZ were slowing the game down at times, taking the sting out of West Ham and then increasing the tempo when they have the ball.

That is how they got the goal. West Ham can complain about the push on Lucas Paqueta but they failed to react to the danger and were punished - albeit Alphonse Areola should have done better.

They need to control the game at their pace, not AZ's. If they stretch AZ, by definition, they have better players and have more chance.

  18. 'Areola should have done better with the goal'published at 21:03 British Summer Time 11 May 2023

HT: West Ham 0-1 AZ Alkmaar

    James Collins
Former West Ham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you ask any goalkeeper, or anyone in football, they'll say Areola should have done better for the goal.

The ball bounced just in front of him, it wasn't overly powerful, and it has caught him a bit by surprise.

For a goalkeeper of Areola's level, you expect him to save it.

  19. 'You expect more from the referee at this level'published at 21:02 British Summer Time 11 May 2023

HT: West Ham 0-1 AZ Alkmaar

    Glenn Murray
Former Brighton striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think there has been a couple of moments where the referee could have stepped in and given free-kicks. There have been a few rough challenges that I think we would have seen given as free-kicks in the Premier League.

I think he has been keen to let the game flow - to pull it back and rule out the goal for the push on Paqueta would have been a bit soft - but you do expect more from a referee at this level.

Paul:I want West Ham win this cup but Moyes is just like Southgate for England. He’s got a lot of talent and ability at his disposal but his tactics and cautious approach hold them back. It may work for a while but it will eventually stop working. And for them it has.

Standard of reffing at the West Ham game is shocking

    Russ

West Ham showing little to no ambition against an 'inferior' team. So much hype all week across the media for so little.
