Luton Town complete a fairytale, a rise from the depths of the National League to the Premier League's soaring heights, just nine years on.

Rob Edwards, handed the reins after sacking by Watford, has taken their rivals to the big time.

Our thoughts too, with defender Tom Lockyer after his being admitted to hospital, albeit responsive and conscious. Best wishes to him.

Coventry, who delivered so many impressive performances this season, are beaten in the cruellest manner, on penalties.

Fankaty Dabo missed the last spot-kick and it was the crucial moment. But it could have been anyone. Hopefully, for the Championship's sake, the Sky Blues will be a force again next year.

That is it though for the 2022-23 Championship season, after a nerve-shredding advert for the division. Forty-nine games each for these two has decided it.

Goodbye Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton. We'll look forward to welcoming the three relegated Premier League clubs once we know them.

It's not the end of the EFL action yet. We've got the League Two play-offs tomorrow and League One on Monday. Join us then.

    Goodnight.

  2. Promotion to Premier League 'is everything'published at 20:32 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

Luton promoted to the Premier League

Luton defender Dan Potts told Sky Sports:

"The squad, the spirit we’ve got. I’m gutted for Locks (Tom Lockyer) he deserved to be there holding that trophy. Hopefully we’ll be able to see him tonight.

"The gaffer always says health is the most important thing and family.

"The lads have been practicing penalties for a while. Everyone said just pick your spot and no regrets.

"It’s everything. The board has been fantastic through tough times and this is for everyone."

On playing the likes of Manchester City next season: Vegas first! We can’t wait but we are going to enjoy this moment."

Having come from such recent depths as they have, the financial reward for reaching the Premier League is an even more enticing carrot for Luton.

The Hatters have grand plans for their new Power Court stadium, which will be submitted for planning application this off-season, and such a boost to the bank balance can only help with that.

Just bringing their current Kenilworth Road up to a level fit for the Premier League has been estimated at a cost of £10m, so there will be plenty of off-field concerns to eat into their pot of top-tier cash.

But tonight, all of that can wait. It's party time.

  5. 'The gaffer said we would do it'published at 20:21 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

Luton promoted to the Premier League

Elijah Abebayo told Sky Sports: "This group is special. Commiserations to Coventry, it was a hell of a battle and they pushed us all the way.

"We've said it since the gaffer has come in, he said we were going to do it but we had to believe it.

"If you look at Luton, every year they seem to improve their position in the league. I just wanted to come here and do my best and aim for days like this.

"The fans who have been here since Luton were relegated to the conference, this is for them."

"Locks, I love you mate we've done it," Carlton Morris sends a message to Luton skipper Tom Lockyer on Sky Sports.

The players are parading their captain's shirt after he was taken to hospital after collapsing only eight minutes into the game.

We've been told that Lockyer is responsive and talking - the best news of all.

  8. One for the fanspublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

This is also for the fans. The ones who made it to places like Maidenhead, Salisbury and Kettering.

The ones who kept putting their hands in their pockets. Ones who rattled buckets to raise money to save the club.

Ones who kept believing when they left Wembley with nothing, the ones who kept coming to the 'Kenny'.

They've risen with their team. Next season, it'll be Old Trafford, the Etihad and the Emirates.

What a reward for such loyalty.

  9. 'Luton deserved to go up'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    Leon Barnett
Former Luton defender on BBC Three Counties Radio

It's been an incredible season and Luton were the third best team in the league and I think it's only right they went up - although penalties is never a nice way to do it.

What a day this is for the town. There's going to be a carnival atmosphere for a long time.

Luton Town's players are just accumulating in the bowels beneath the Royal Box, waiting for everyone to be in the picture.

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu didn't finish the game after he was substituted for Luton, but the midfielder has a chance to make it in the big time.

He's played for the club at every level on their rise, and if he runs out in early August as a Premier League player, he will join an elite club.

Luton players are heading up to the Royal Box, the great walk of any occasion.

Thoughts of course also go to Tom Lockyer, who played a major role in getting Luton to this point.

He was withdrawn on a stretcher and taken to hospital for further tests, although responsive and talking to family.

Hopefully he will be all healthy and able to celebrate with his team-mates.

They’ve been superb. All five penalties before were superb.

I feel for Fankaty Dabo. It’s a shame.

It was really disappointing but what teams tend to do is go up on the back of reaching the playoffs in the previous season so it’s about consistency now.

They need to recruit well, keep their best players and try to build on this next season.

That’s what Coventry have got to aim for. You could only see one team winning it in normal time but it’s gone to the dreaded sudden death.

Luton's delight was visible, as Gary Sweet hugged those nearest and dearest at full-time.

The players are saluting their fans, hugging and taking it in. But some are still having to acknowledge the achievement.

Tears are in eyes. This is history. No club in the post-Premier League era has done the climb from non-league to the top flight.

Luton just did. The 'Kenny' will host the elite, with pride.

  17. 'Cruellest way to lose'published at 19:56 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

Luton 1-1 Coventry (6-5 on pens)

    Steve Ogrizovic
Ex-Coventry City goalkeeper on BBC CWR

It’s the cruellest way to lose any cup final.

He’s hit that well-wide but what an effort all season, even right at the death.

I feel so desperately sorry for the players but they’ve got to be proud of the season. There’s so much fight and determination in this squad.

The fans are going to be very down but you have to say thanks to the players, it’s been a season to remember.

Fankaty Dabo won’t be blamed by the players, management or fans.

Someone had to miss and unfortunately it’s him.

Every play-off final has two completely contrasting emotions, but after a penalty shoot-out, those feelings are even more keenly felt.

It's not like you've been thrashed. It was settled by spot-kicks. Over 120 minutes of action, nothing between them.

The Coventry players walk to their fans who are equally devastated, they look hollow and stunned. As you would.

I am sure everyone will get around Fankaty Dabo to console him. It could have been anyone.

It's unbelievable. Coming from Luton and seeing them go through the tough times and come back through the leagues - this is incredible.

Luton are showing their class too, going around shaking hands.

I never would have thought in my lifetime I'd see Luton Town playing top-flight football.
