That's completely changed the mood inside the ground. USA fans are out of their seats to celebrate Lindsey Horan's goal. By the way, impeccable timing by the captain to meet the header. Will the defending champions go on and win it?

That was a stonking header from Horan, so much power behind it, and her celebration was a roar of released tension.

There is a different atmosphere around this game now.

Lindsey Horan is back on the pitch, and complaining to Yoshimi Yamashita about that Van de Donk tackle.

Clearly the US captain feels it was over the top and is very unhappy that the Dutch player has got away scot-free.

Eventually Horan's own team mates have to intervene.

Corner USA, a really nice back heel from Alex Morgan almost sets Rose Lavelle through and the Dutch have to defend.

However United States can't do anything from the set piece.

12 minutes into the second half, we are yet to see a clear sight of goal after the interval.

Which will suit Netherlands perfectly.

It is very unlike US players to lose their head. They are composed, and no matter how much others try to disrupt them, they never normally react. It just shows how well the Netherlands are playing and how much in control they are.

United States just look rattled. They are having plenty of possession around the Dutch area but every touch is a bit heavy, every pass a bit off.

They have not settled after half-time. The opposite, in fact.

Sophia Smith with a clumsy late tackle on Victoria Pelova, who performed a delicate piece of skill to take the ball away from her opponent.

The Americans are getting a taste of their own medicine here.

And then Rose Lavelle gets a booking, just five minutes after coming on, for a really clumsy tackle on Jackie Groenen.

The Dutch had 61% possession in the first half and have started on the front foot again here.

They rode out the early American pressure and have looked confident and composed since going ahead.

Dutch football journalist Annemarie Postma speaking on BBC One: "You can't compare this match, with the match four years ago.

"Even though the Netherlands seemed shaky in the beginning they took back control and they kept passing the ball around and looking for the chances, and you can see the qualities of Esmee Brugts and Victoria Pelova on the left and the right-hand side.

"Lieke Martens has been incredible. it shows she has gained a lot of confidence under Andries Jonker. It's a different team to a year ago - and four years ago."

For the Dutch, defender Stefanie Van der Gragt took a blow late in the first half and has come off. Chelsea centre back Aniek Nouwen is her replacement.

For USA, Rose Lavelle has indeed been brought on, for Savannah DeMelo who looked like a walking yellow card in the first half.

You saw towards the end of that half there was a bit of frustration from the United States, there were tackles flying in.

The way the game started it was really frantic, really intense. They were pressing high, aggressive and flying down the flanks but they didn't get their rewards and now they're wondering what do they do next.

That Jill Roord goal is the only shot on target the USA have faced in this tournament so far.

They do not concede goals. They do not lose.

But as it stands, they are 45 minutes away from a very unfamiliar feeling.

The Netherlands are playing really well. They really grew into the game, it was like the United States didn’t know what to do. The USA started really well, they came out of the blocks fast, they were explosive. We were like ‘OK, this is going to be America’s day’.

The Netherlands looked a bit shaky in their play but once the goal went in it all changed for them. Since then they’ve been really composed.

Wednesday was the most dramatic day of the tournament so far, as two sides progressed into the round of 16 while three were consigned to the exit.

In Group C, both Japan and Spain went through after wins over Costa Rica and Zambia respectively. They will meet in the final round of group fixtures to determine the pool winner.

Then in the late game, Republic of Ireland suffered heartbreak on their Women's World Cup debut as they lost 2-1 to Olympic champions Canada, despite Katie McCabe putting them in front directly from a corner in the fourth minute. What a moment that was.

That defeat ensures the Irish cannot qualify from Group B, with one game still to play.
