  1. Penalties at Wembleypublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    Chesterfield 2-2 Notts County (AET)

The National League promotion final has gone to penalties.

Notts County have changed their keeper especially.

I wouldn't normally urge you to stop following my work, but on this occasion I wouldn't blame you.

You can follow the shootout here.

    Sunderland 1-1 Luton

Pierre Ekwah goes down in the Luton area under pressure from Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu.

The referee isn't interested and I think he's right not to be.

    Sunderland buzzing just now though.

  3. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Sunderland 1-1 Luton

    Quick bit of housekeeping.

Luton midfielder Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu was booked for the challenge on Patrick Roberts that led to the free-kick that Amad Diallo crashed home.

    Four bookings now. Two apiece.

You could feel the concrete of this stadium shaking as that ball wrapped its way into the back of the net. It was like a jet taking off.

    Superb goal too.

Just before that Rob Edwards and Tony Mowbray were both stalking their technical areas, in that awkward way that grooms waiting the delayed arrival of their bride-to-be would patrol the altar.

They're a little less anxious on the Mackem side now, the 'bride' has just turned up and she's looking beautiful.

    Gary Bennett
Ex-Sunderland defender on BBC Radio Newcastle

    Ridiculous - what a goal.

Everybody knew what Amad Diallo wanted to do but thought 'can he do it'.

What a strike, what a goal.

It's not a one-off, he does it all the time.

    Amad Diallo (39 mins)

The home side level it up!

What had I just been saying about Amad Diallo?!

The Manchester United loanee has barely had a touch up until now but boy, what a touch this is!

Alex Pritchard rolls a free-kick for him to hit and he curls home an absolute stunner from 25 yards with his left foot.

    Superb!

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

I've not written Amad Diallo's name yet.

The young Manchester United forward has had a great season on Wearside but he just hasn't had a kick yet today.

  8. Postpublished at 32 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

Alfie Doughty looks to catch Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Paterson out at his near post but the young glovesman is alert and gathers well.

  9. YELLOW CARDpublished at 31 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

Sunderland centre-back (today) Luke O'Nien is the latest in the book.

He leads with an elbow on an aerial challenge with Jordan Clark and the referee doesn't like it. Not one bit.

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 29 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

Luton midfielder Marvelous Nakamba has just been warned and then he catches Joe Gelhardt.

    He's booked now.

Given Tony Mowbray was the type of centre-half who would have put his head on the end of a brick if it would win his team the game, it's unsurprising his Sunderland team is brave.

Brave in a different way though. They back themselves, technically. Whether it's playing out from the back or intricately trying to pick their way through midfield. They trust and they take a whack doing so.

Luton though are just starting to edge the 50-50s and have the power game to go with it. Watching Amari'i Bell, Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu and Jordan Clark streak across the turf, they have another gear.

  12. Sunderland 'schoolboy errors'published at 17:57 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

    Gary Bennett
Ex-Sunderland defender on BBC Radio Newcastle

    We are making schoolboy errors.

    Lynden Gooch is diving in.

Yes, we're asking them to do a job - they're not out-and-out defenders, and you can see it at times.

  13. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

    BIG block from Trai Hume!

Lynden Gooch sells himself on the halfway line and Luton are in.

Jordan Clark pulls it back for Elijah Adebayo but the Northern Irishman hurls himself in front of the shot.

  14. Postpublished at 23 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

Sunderland fans think Marvelous Nakamba should be in the book for a late tackle on Pierre Ekwah.

The referee decides to just have a a strong word with the Zimbabwe international.

The home fans do not like that.

    Rob EdwardsImage source, Rex Features

What a season Luton boss Rob Edwards has had.

He started the campaign in charge of local rivals Watford but they predictably sacked him after just a few months in charge.

    Their loss.

He turned up at Kenilworth Road a few weeks later after Nathan Jones left for Southampton (the less said about that the better...) and led them to third.

    Watford? They finished 12th.

  16. YELLOW CARDpublished at 16 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

Sunderland need to keep their heads.

Young midfielder Dan Neil is booked for a very poor challenge on Carlton Morris.

It was 45 yards out and out on the touchline. Needless.

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

    Matt Newsum
BBC Sport at the Stadium of Light

How to silence a stadium. Luton score and the noise just dropped.

However, fair play to the Sunderland fans, having digested that disappointment they were straight back at it, roaring their team on.

The Hatters faithful, nestled up in the gods in the north stand, are enjoying themselves now.

  18. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

Luton suffered play-off heartbreak last season when they lost at the semi-final stage to Huddersfield.

They won't want to fall short two years in a row and they have made the perfect start today.

  19. 'An absolute mismatch'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

    Sunderland 0-1 Luton

    Geoff Doyle
    BBC Three Counties Radio sport

It's an absolute mismatch as far as aerial threat is concerned.

Sunderland never won a ball in there.

They're panicking straight away and then Elijah Adebayo finishes it off for Luton.

    Elijah Adebayo (11 mins)

    Luton scoreImage source, Rex Features

    The Hatters hit the front!

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray was worried his side would be susceptible from set-pieces with their lack of height and so it has proved.

The Hatters win a corner and keep the ball alive.

Anthony Patterson makes a great save from Alfie Doughty but Elijah Adebayo is on hand to thump it over the line from two yards.
