Nigeria have looked a bit tentative for the first part of this game but now they are coming into it.

Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum watches on arms folded, reasonably satisfied with what he has seen so far I would think.

The American has had a tempestuous time since taking over in 2020 - they finished fourth at the last Women's AFCON, making this the first World Cup where Nigeria have not arrived as African champions.

Combined with the bonus arguments, he's a man under pressure - but hsi team are dealing with pressure in this match thus far.

A first sighter for Nigeria!

Toni Payne with a snap shot from 25 yards, curled around a defender and bouncing right in front of goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

Sheridan does well to palm it behind for a corner, which Canada clear.

20 minutes played, Canada have had 74% possession.

No breakthrough yet however.

Oshoala is indeed back on the field of play. Good to see.

Now this is concerning for Nigeria, Quinn has gone in tough on Asisat Oshoala and the Super Falcons star is getting treatment.

Fortunately for them, Oshoala is back on her feet and should be able to continue.

Francisca Ordega gives away the first corner of the game to Canada, blocking an Ashley Lawrence cross.

The set piece is not fully cleared, and Kadeisha Buchanan swings a boot at the loose ball. Her shot is blocked and Nigeria escape.

Canada are starting to look sharp, with Sinclair predictably at the centre of everything.

They are missing key striker Janine Beckie - 36 goals in 101 caps - who is one of several major names absent from this World Cup with an ACL injury.

They will hope not to miss her too much today.

She turns in space on the edge of the Nigeria D, but Sinclair places her shot wide of the top left corner.

Adriana Leon goes down under a tough challenge from Francisca Ordega, but any claims of a foul are waved away.

I think it will be a tight game. Canada are the favourites but Nigeria have a lot of pace in their side.

A scrappy opening few minutes, neither team able to get a foot on the ball in the early stages.

Nigeria are setting up in a deep defensive shape when Canada are in possession. We could see a similar pattern to Australia v Republic of Ireland last night, where the co-hosts needed to take quite some time to break down the underdogs.

It is far from a capacity crowd at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, however there is a decent buzz going round.

Anticipation of what should be a competitive game.

Match three of the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup is about to commence.

Quinn starts in midfield today in their second World Cup - and their first after coming out as transgender non-binary in 2020.

They were the first trans non-binary athlete to compete in the Olympics at Tokyo 2020 - and the first to scoop a gold medal as Canada beat Sweden on penalties in the final.

There are two English managers at this World Cup - Colin Bell with South Korea, and Canada boss Bev Priestman.

Hailing from the north-east, the 37-year-old was previously assistant to John Herdman - who took Canada's men to Qatar 2022 - before being number two to Phil Neville for England at the 2019 tournament.

She returned to Canada to become head coach in 2020, leading them to Olympic gold in Tokyo the following year.

Nigeria have been to every Women's World Cup since 1991 but only once have reached the quarter-finals. If they are to truly make their mark on the global stage, then 28-year-old striker Asisat Oshoala will be key.

"When you have Oshoala, you have a chance against any team," said Nigeria's American coach Randy Waldrum, referring both to the striker's goal record - 83 strikes in 89 Barcelona league matches - and trophy haul.

Oshoala's honours feature a Champions League title, three African championships for Nigeria, back-to-back titles from a spell in China, and a Women's FA Cup from 2016 with Arsenal. She won the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year award in 2015, while with Liverpool.

She missed the 2023 Champions League final through injury, however is back fit today. That is crucial for Nigeria.

Canada and Nigeria have met twice at Women's World Cups - and the African nation have never lost.

In the 2011 competition, Nigeria came out on top 1-0, thanks to a goal from Perpetua Nkwocha.

Both sides had already been eliminated from the competition at this point however, as Germany and France progressed from Group A.
