Stat attack

USA had 66% possession, with 29 shots of which eight on target. Vietnam did not have a single shot.

The Americans played 370 passes with 80% accuracy, while the Vietnamese made 126 passes at 49% accuracy.

Both sides committed 13 fouls, interestingly. Vietnam were physical but simply gave as good as they got, so fair play to them.

The state of play in Group E

Netherlands and Portugal - the other two sides in a stacked Group E - make their World Cup bows tomorrow, with kick off at 08.30 BST.

United States are next in action on 27 July, against the Dutch in a repeat of the 2019 World Cup final.

Vietnam face Portugal on the same day. If they play like they did today, the Vietnamese will fancy coming away with something.

Had the USA been clinical today - Alex Morgan's missed penalty springs to mind - they could have got a hatful.

But they were wasteful in their shooting and passing, and will have to improve hugely in order to secure that historic third successive World Cup.

FULL-TIME

United States get what they came for - three points.

Vietnam get what they came for - the respect of the football world.

Lindsey Horan sends the USA's 29th shot of the game wildly over the crossbar.

A lovely floated cross by Lindsey Horan, however Rose Lavelle cannot guide her header on target.

The offside flag was up regardless.

Hai Yen is almost played in, however an unfortunate slip denies the opportunity.

Vietnam have not had a single shot today.

Vietnam continue to fight for every ball.

Lindsey Horan tries various flicks and tricks to get through in the box, however is blocked out by at least six red shirts.

They have been an absolute credit to themselves in this game, not taking a single backwards step against the best team in the world.

It's like Qatar 2022 all over again.

Fifa said they would be tough with the added time as they were at the men's World Cup. They meant it.

SUBSTITUTION

Hai Linh in fact has to be replaced, on comes Thanh Nha.

It looks as if goalkeeper Kim Thanh got a fingertip to that Lavelle shot. A very fine save.

At the other end, Kelley O'Hara has gone in very strong on Hai Linh, who has gone down in a heap. O'Hara gets spoken to.
