Marta could become the first player - man or woman - to score in six World Cups - although the 37-year-old, who has made 186 appearances for Brazil, scoring 122 goals and been named as World Player of the Year on six occasions, will begin today as one of the substitutes.

Coach Pia Sundhage, speaking in her pre-match news conference, said: "We're not picking the two best forwards. We will pick forwards who connect with each other."

If Panama are looking for some inspiration, they only have to look at the other match to have taken place in Group F.

France, ranked fifth in the world, were held to a goalless draw by a Jamaica side, who are 38 places lower down at 43rd and ended the match with 10 players following the late dismissal of star striker Khadija Shaw.

Kick-off is at 12:00 BST in Adelaide as eighth-ranked Brazil take on Panama, statistically the weakest team in the group down at 52nd.

Everyone then plays again next Saturday with France against Brazil in Brisbane before Panama take on Jamaica in Perth.

The final matches in the group are on 2 August at 11:00 BST with Panama v France in Sydney and Jamaica v Brazil in Melbourne.

  5. Can Panama cause a huge shock?published at 11:29 British Summer Time 24 July 2023

We have eight nations playing in the Fifa Women's World Cup for the first time this year.

Haiti, Morocco, Philippines, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Vietnam and Zambia have all lost their opening matches, with none of them able to score yet in Australia and New Zealand.

The last debutants, Panama, get under way today and will be looking to spring an almighty shock against Brazil - a nation who have come so close in the past but are aiming to win this tournament for the first time.
