Spain have had their first shot of the game now. Salma Paralluleo with a left-footed grass-cutter from 25 yards, but Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita watches it all the way and falls forwards on to the shot.

    Better from Spain though.

Japan have really opened up a wound here for Spain. They have exploited the pace at the back.

Spain haven't got the pace in the two central defenders and that's exactly where Japan are aiming for.

Hinata Miyazawa is loving this World Cup. That's her third of the tournament. It's a lovely composed finish but there are questions for the Spanish defence to answer.

What a goal. This ball has worked perfectly. Spain really struggle to get back running towards their own goal.

Jun Endo, what a ball that is. All the players are running forward before the ball has even left her foot.

Great finish from Hinata Miyazawa, really calm finish from her because she was under pressure.

GOAL - Japan 1-0 Spainpublished at 12 mins

    Hinata Miyazawa

Japan strike first as Spain concede a goal for the first time in this tournament.

Great work from Jun Endo in the build-up, the ball is played in beyond the Spain defence from the halfway line and Hinata Miyazawa wins the race to get there first.

She takes a touch to set herself and strokes the ball left-footed past Misa Rodriguez for a goal that could well see Japan win Group C.

That's Miyazawa's third goal of the tournament, taking her level as the top scorer.

Rachael Kundananji has a great chance to score a second goal for Zambia with a direct free-kick from just outside the penalty area.

The shot gets past the wall but doesn't have enough power to cause any problems for Daniela Solera in the Costa Rica goal.

Aitana Bonmati should have thrown herself at that, very very close.

Spain are seeing a lot of the ball, but not created any notable chances so far. Aitana Bonmati, one of the stars of their Euro 2022 campaign, which came to an end at the quarter-final phase with a loss to England, is just unable to get on the end of an opportunity.

A moment Lushomo Mweemba will never forget.

The ball comes in and she just re-directs the ball over the keeper with the side of her foot.

What a moment for her and Zambia.

I'm disappointed not to see Yui Hasegawa, it would have been great to see her play against the Spain midfield but I don't think the changes weaken Japan at all.

Two teams that really enjoy possession, I think we're going to see a lot of possession from Spain. Japan will be happy enough to sit in as Spain will have most of the ball.

We're past the halfway stage in terms of matches played at the biggest Fifa Women's World Cup. With the average gate around 26,500, the aggregate attendance for the first 34 games has reached 900,000.

It is possible the one million milestone will be reached later today. If not it will be Tuesday, when defending champions the United States, European champions England and 2019 runners-up the Netherlands are all in action.

This World Cup feels wide open from what we've seen so far and I would include both of these teams in my list of five or six serious contenders who have either been really impressive or look like they have another couple of gears to find.

With their progress already assured, they are both trying to top Group C, but I don't think either will fear whoever they end up facing out of Group A. I could see Japan or Spain going on to win the tournament, they have been that good.

"It's hard to pick a winner here, but I am going to go with Spain to take it, just about, 1-2.

Spain are the tournament's leading scorers after rattling in eight goals in their opening two group games. La Roja have been exciting to watch but boredom has set in off the field, according to one report.

So much so that the squad moved out of its base in Palmerston North - about 85 miles away from Wellington - early as the lack of things to do in the small city has taken its toll on the Spanish, according to ESPN., external

Andrea Pelaez Marzo, a sports journalist for Spanish radio station Cadena COPE, is following the team around New Zealand.

"Palmerston North is the smallest place in the whole tournament," she told me.

"When the players have free days, they do not have too much to do. We prefer - the media and players - to stay in cities like Wellington or Auckland."

Spain boss Jorge Vilda, whose father, Angel, worked under Johan Cruyff at Barcelona, played down the story on Sunday.

"We were very pleased with the treatment that we received inside and outside the hotel. They treated us like a family," said Vilda.

China v England (Tuesday, 12:00 BST)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport at Hindmarsh Stadium

While all eyes are on Japan v Spain - where two nations who have impressed so far go head-to-head - the Lionesses are preparing for their final Group D match against China.

England need just a point to confirm progression to the last 16 as group winners.

The media are currently gathering in Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium as we wait to hear from manager Sarina Wiegman and midfielder Georgia Stanway.

There has been plenty of chat this week about the absence of instrumental midfielder Keira Walsh.

I would bet my house on the opening question to Wiegman being: "How will you replace Walsh?"

I don't think she will tell us...

Wiegman has 22 players to choose from with everyone except Walsh training at Central Coast Stadium in Sydney earlier this morning.
