Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom to BBC Sport: "Forest started the game really brightly. We made errors and conceded from one. From 20 minutes in we were very good and played really well. I was delighted with the second-half performance.

"We more than matched them after 20 minutes. That was the performance we wanted to see. The new players could see it.

"I've admired Gus for a long time. You can see his quality today.

"The first one is good but we should have dealt with it. Same with the second goal. We brought two young boys on and there was a bit of misunderstanding on who to press.

"It's our job to try to fix that. We're in the biggest league, the toughest league."

Nottingham Forest have conceded 17 goals from outside the box in the Premier League since the start of last season, the second-most behind relegated Leicester City (18).

Nottingham Forest’s winner was their latest winning goal in the Premier League since Alf Inge Haaland netted after 89 minutes against Arsenal in December 1996.

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper to BBC Sport: "We started really well and scored early. We played well. We took our foot off the gas a bit. I didn't like the complacency in the game. But we settled and played well after that. We gave them a chance and Matt made a brilliant save.

"We played the real football in the game, the real tactical ideas. In the end we've scored two really good goals.

"The boys showed good quality with the crossing and headers.

"You don't get many chances in this league. But we could have created some more. But we scored two. It's important to get the first win of the season.

"When we start a game like that we should show more ruthlessness to make it more comfortable than it was.

"When we played our football we were far superior.

"Maybe we don't win that last year. Maybe it's a draw. It reminds me of when we played Bournemouth, were two up and lost. Hopefully it's progress."

Sheffield United

Sheffield United scorer Gustavo Hamer: "We deserved more, especially second half.

"After 20 minutes we found our rhythm and dominated the pitch. At 1-1 we had an extra boost to keep going with a big opportunity for 2-1."

On his goal: "I got all the space, took a touch and just wanted to curve it in the top corner. You want to get a goal as soon as possible but you don't get anything from a 2-1 loss.

"The boss wants my energy, my desire in forcing the centre-backs to play long balls. I don't have 100% completion but I try to open their back three or four for the strikers."

Forest equal their Premier League club record of four successive home victories. They have done this on three previous occasions, most recently from December 1995 to January 1996.

An addition to that Serge Aurier stat a minute ago, he has one goal and four assists in his five Premier League appearances against Sheffield United.

Nottingham Forest matchwinner Chris Wood: "It's always nice to come on and make an impact. The boys worked hard in the whole game."

On what he was told coming on: "Try and emulate what Taiwo Awoniyi did. Bit of energy at the end. Go into the box and see what you can do. He [Serge Aurier] has got quality, we're grateful to have him.

"The pace was on the ball. The cross made the finish. I just needed to glance it.

"You always want to play but he's in fantastic form. I just have to bide my time."

Nottingham Forest’s Serge Aurier has assisted two goals in a single game in a top-flight game - in any country - for the second time in his career.

The previous instance was also against Sheffield United, for Spurs in May 2021.

The Blades probably think he's one of the best full-backs in Europe every time they see him.
