There’s a feast of EFL football in store on Saturday with Sunderland kicking-off proceedings at home to Middlesbrough in the Wear-Tees derby at 12.30, with the Black Cats seeking a win to take them third.

At 15:00 leaders Leicester will seek to maintain their advantage as they host Stoke while closest challengers Ipswich will be looking to pounce on any slip-ups as they welcome Preston.

Leeds entertain Bristol City trying to keep pace with the leading pack while there are three other potential leapfrog matches - Coventry v Norwich, Millwall v Hull and Plymouth v Swansea– where whoever wins will be higher in the table.

Winless basement-boys Sheffield Wednesday, now without Xisco Munoz, face former boss Darren Moore as Huddersfield head to Hillsborough while second-bottom Rotherham visit Southampton, third-bottom QPR host Blackburn and fourth-bottom Watford head to Cardiff in eighth.

Of course we'll bring you all the action live right here from 12:15.

Goals change games, they always say. And that controversial Blues penalty looks like it might have been a bit of a game turner.

The only thing you can generally go on as a safe means of deciding whether any penalty really should have been a penalty is the instant reaction to it.

I heard at last two gasps of astonishment in the pressbox, one flash of anger and some baffled looks amongst the Blues fans around us.

Of course it all quickly turned to cheers - even more so when Juninho Bacuna sent Albion keeper Alex Palmer the wrong way from the spot.

But, judging by the size of the posse of Albion players circled round referee James Linnington, it looked a decison that might just get talked about a bit later.

To rub Albion noses in it, Blues even then came up with a second goal, as Dion Sanderson evaded the offside flag to loop a powerful header over the back-pedalling Palmer. The Baggies players finished the half looking like they are still feeling a bit punchdrunk by it all.

    Well, well, well.

John Swift's sixth goal of the season on six minutes gave Albion a perfect start but the penalty awarded to Koji Miyoshi by referee James Linnington after a challenge by Cedric Kipre on 23 minutes, converted coolly by Juninho Bacuna, changed the complexion of the game.

Baggies fans were furious as they felt Miyoshi slipped.

Dion Sanderson's fine header 15 minutes later has completed a stunning turnaround and all of a sudden this feels a big 15 minutes for Carlos Corberan here.

Blues haven't beaten West Brom four times straight since 1931. They are 45 minutes away from doing just that...

    Birmingham 2-1 West Brom

In the space of 15 minutes West Brom have conceded as many goals as they had in the previous five matches.

The penalty decision seems to have taken the wind out of their sails and though Matt Phillips drove inside and lashed over the bar moments ago, the hosts look the likelier to score next.

Dion Sanderson pops up with his first goal of the season to turn the derby on its head.

Cody Dramah whips a delicious cross back into the middle from the right after a corner is only half cleared by Albion and the skipper is there to head home perfectly past Alex Palmer and into the far corner to put Blues ahead.

    Birmingham 1-1 West Brom

Erik Pieters and Juninho Bacuna are having a right old tussle. Bacuna has already been handed one free-kick but Pieters got away with having his hands all over his fellow Dutchman there.

Maybe they are just old friends?

    Birmingham 1-1 West Brom

Juninho Bacuna almost sends Siriki Dembele through with an audacious volleyed through ball, only for Albion defender Darnell Furlong to get himself in the way and draw a shove from the Blues attacker to earn a free-kick.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 26 mins

    Birmingham 1-1 West Brom

Blues midfielder Krystian Bielik has his name taken after hauling down the marauding Jed Wallace just outside the area.

    No complaints.

John Swift cannot keep the subsequent free-kick down, much to the delight of the home fans.

    Juninho Bacuna (pen)

Juninho Bacuna keeps his cool and sends the keeper the wrong way from the spot. A real high point in what must have been a desperately challenging week for the Blues man.

    Penalty or not, it's 1-1. .

  10. PENALTY TO BLUESpublished at 22 mins

    Birmingham 0-1 West Brom

West Brom are furious. They think Koji Miyoshi slipped as he came under pressure from Cedric Kipre trying to cut back onto his right foot...

The referee is not having any of it and points to the spot.

    Birmingham 0-1 West Brom

Birmingham have had most of the ball but haven't done a lot with it, with West Brom looking solid at the back - as you might expect of a side looking for a fifth clean sheet in six games.

John Swift did nothing to ingratiate himself to Blues fans as he went down in a heap outside the area, only to be told to get up by the referee.

  12. Swift strike a bit of a mood killerpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 6 October 2023

    Birmingham 0-1 West Brom

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at Edgbaston

St Andrew's was buoyant and bouncing at kick-off. A tantalising glimpse of what this ground might be like when it is properly back to its Premier League days, playing in front of a full house every week.

But already the mood has gone a bit flat, that was Swift both in name and nature.

The pre-match firework smoke had barely cleared before John Swift stunned the home hordes with that precise low finish.

The in-form Swift might have guided it in with almost surgical accuracy, and it was cunningly low and well-struck, but you have to think Blues keeper John Ruddy might feel a touch disappointed when he sees it again.

  13. CLOSE!published at 11 mins

    Birmingham 0-1 West Brom

Jay Stansfield gets a clear header from Juninho Bacuna's corner but can only glance across the face of goal where Koji Miyoshi is only able to lash into the side-netting from an acute angle at the far post.

Set pieces have been an area of weakness for Baggies this season so far.

Darnell Furlong is perhaps a touch fortunate to avoid a booking after unceremoniously blocking Siriki Dembele as he tried to spin him in midfield.

Just a free-kick, for now. But Blues waste it.

  15. goal

GOAL: Birmingham 0-1 West Brompublished at 5 mins

    John Swift

Blues concede possession in their own half and allow John Swift to drift into space on the edge of the D, the ball is rolled to him by Grady Diangana and he strokes a curling low shot in off the inside of John Ruddy's far post to send the travelling fans wild.

Swift has now scored six this season and has been involved in five goals in his last six league games against Birmingham (two goals, three assists).

    Birmingham 0-0 West Brom

Fairly low-key start to proceedings as the smoke from the pre-match pyrotechnics drifts over B9. End to end stuff but without any openings thus far and referee James Linnington has been busy already.

    Birmingham v West Brom

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at St Andrew's

We've had the familiar sound of 'Mr Blue Sky' over the tannoy, the fireworks have gone off, the Albion corner at the Railway Stand End looks jam-packed and there are Birmingham City fans legally standing at the Tilton Road End again.

Well 800 of them at least in the newly opened safe-standing area. With more to come by Christmas when they've finished the rest of it - and the same in the Spion Kop Stand.

It's a 21,000 reduced-capacity sell-out for the first West Midlands derby of the season. And the only thing to worry about right now is just how bad will the traffic be outside when the ground is back uo to its 30,000 capacity again!

    Birmingham v West Brom (20:00 kick-off)

One change for the visitors with Carlos Corberan opting to recall fit-again Grady Diangana - who scored the last time the Baggies won here in December 2019 - after his illness with Brandon Thomas-Asante dropping to the bench.

That means no recognised striker for Albion, but it also means the same side which pumped Preston 4-0 on Saturday before Diangana fell ill.

Semi Ajayi is among the substitutes after an ankle injury.

West Brom XI: Palmer; Kipre, Bartley, Pieters; Furlong, Yokuslu, Mowatt, Phillips; Diangana, Swift, Wallace

Subs: Griffiths, Pipa, Townsend, Ajayi, Molumby, Chalobah, Fellows, Taylor, Thomas-Asante.
