Despite the EFL Cup victory over Nottingham Forest, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany said he was concerned by a serious-looking injury to defender Hjalmar Ekdal, who was carried off on a stretcher following a collision in the box.

Summer signing Aaron Ramsey and Vitinho also limped off to leave Burnley with injury issues to deal with before Saturday's Premier League game against Tottenham at Turf Moor.

"One [injury] I think will be bad, it looked like it," said Kompany. "I will take any positive news on Ekdal. We hope Vitinho is not too bad. It looks a knee for both, for Ekdal we hope it is not going to be too bad. He was in a lot of pain. There was a cost to this game for sure."

Burnley, meanwhile, have lost their opening two Premier League games but manager Vincent Kompany saw plenty of potential in his side's last-gasp EFL Cup win over Nottingham Forest: "Based on the performance, we would have always been pleased to get what we deserve, a result and clean sheet. A good win for the lads and into another round.

"Premier League teams have got such quality squads you don't weaken when you make changes. Forest's main players going forward were not starting, but we made changes and looked the same as us.

"Zeki has got a real goal threat, hopefully one of many. That is one exciting thing about our squad, there is potential for the future too."

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper speaking on Wednesday night after his side's EFL Cup defeat by Burnley: "We got what we deserved in terms of the result. It does not need details today, it needs he basic fact that we fell short of our performance levels collectively and individually.

"It wasn't a great game, it had 0-0 written all over it but didn't feel we would concede. Technically we were miles off it today.

"It is something we need to look at, people will say we made a few changes but whether you have played the last few games or not, you have to be prepared to play. There is no reason why players should not hit the ground running with performance levels."

Substitute Zeki Amdouni struck a cool, last-minute winner as Burnley edged past Nottingham Forest to reach the third round of the EFL Cup.

Switzerland international Amdouni delightfully controlled Josh Brownhill's pass before firing a finish past Matt Turner for the winning goal and one of only two shots on target in the entire contest.

It gave Vincent Kompany's side their first victory of the season and sent four-time winners Forest out of the competition at the first hurdle.

With 11 minutes added on, Steve Cooper's side pushed for an equaliser to take the game to penalties, but Burnley held firm to put their name in the hat for the next round.

A final word from the Sheffield United camp following Wednesday night's defeat on penalties to Lincoln City in the EFL Cup.

Assistant manager Stuart McCall told BBC Radio Sheffield that the cup loss did not add further pressure to this weekend's Premier League clash with Everton, with both clubs seeking their first points of the season.

“It's not must-win," said McCall about Saturday's match against his former club. "We'd love to win but it's not the end of the season if we don't.

"I go back a long time, to when I was playing at Bradford, and I think we got almost a third of our points in the last five games.

“I think [Nottingham] Forest went a couple of months without getting a victory last season. We don't want that to happen, naturally, but we can't put it as a must-win, where if we come away with a point it's all doom and gloom.”

On transfer plans ahead of Friday's deadline: “We might hopefully get a couple of new faces in before the window closes. There have been some good signs from the players we've brought in and we're ready to give it a go.”

Tottenham's name was mentioned, including by me, as being linked with Ansu Fati.

They were not in for the Barcelona youngster, apparently.

However, there is interest in Nottingham Forest's Brennan Johnson, which could yet turn into a concrete offer.

A lot of work is being done on outgoings though.

Hugo Lloris, Sergio Reguilon, Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga and Eric Dier are all surplus to requirements and could leave.

In addition, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg wants to leave and Tottenham would let him go if a suitable offer came in.

An update on Matheus Nunes, who has been cleared to have a medical in Manchester after a formal agreement was reached over his move from Wolves to Manchester City.

The deal was renegotiated late last night amid wrangling over some additional payments.

The transfer fee is now £53m – a club record sale for Wolves. There are no add-ons but there is a 10% sell-on from any profit City make on the deal.

In addition, Tommy Doyle will have his medical today for a season-long loan with a 5m euros (4.3m) option to buy.

Manchester City would have a 50% sell on fee for any profit Wolves make on him.

Sheffield United captain John Egan missed the final penalty of the shootout after strikers Louie Marsh and Benie Traore had their spot-kicks saved by 6ft 6in goalkeeper Lukas Jensen, sending Lincoln City through 3-2 on penalties after the match ended 0-0.

"It's the best feeling," said Jensen, who did not make an appearance during a four-year spell at Burnley before joining Lincoln in June.

"I don't think you can describe it - you have to be in the moment. All the feelings and emotions came out.

"Big credit to my goalkeeper coach. I think they nicked my bottle, so I couldn't see where they were going to shoot.

"To do it in front of all our fans on that side is an amazing feeling - to have 3,000 fans cheering and celebrating with us after the game. All the credit should go to the team."

Sheffield United assistant manager Stuart McCall, speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, on being knocked out of the EFL Cup by League One Lincoln City: "No excuses - it was a flat performance. It would be easy to say it was on the back of Sunday and having a full house against Man City. We discussed that before the game - we have to make our own atmosphere.

"Lincoln brought a good contingent, filled their end and got behind their side.

"It's not to take anything away from Lincoln. They were good and you've got to give them credit. They defended really well in their shape and were hard to break down, but we've got to be creating more than that.

"The manager summed it up at the end - we were bored watching it. That's how we don't want our teams to play; we want to be on the front foot, creating chances and getting balls in the box."

Uefa's chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti backed Boban's comments and added that the European football governing body had been working for five years on other solutions to increase the amount of time the ball is in play.

"We tell our referees to speed up the restart of play instead of focusing on stoppage time," said Rosetti.

So what do you think the answer should be?

Added time showing 90+9 minutes at Craven CottageImage source, Getty Images

Uefa's chief of football Zvonimir Boban - the former Croatia and AC Milan midfielder - has called the Premier League's new time-keeping policy "absolutely absurd".

Here is a bit more about what he had to say about the levels of time being added on to Premier League games: "Regarding player welfare, it's some kind of big tragedy because [they] are adding almost 12, 13, 14 minutes.

"When you play 60, 65 minutes - I can speak from my experience, especially as a midfielder - when you get tired, it's the last 30 minutes of the game. And then somebody comes and adds another 15 minutes.

"How often we have spoken critically about the calendar and too many games. We are not listening to players and coaches [about welfare]. It's crazy! It's too much, so we will not do this. Our guidelines are different."

  17. Uefa will not adopt Premier League's 'absurd' stoppage-time rulepublished at 08:51 British Summer Time 31 August 2023

    Zvonimir BobanImage source, Getty Images

The new added-time rules in English football are "absurd" and will not be used in European competitions, according to Uefa's chief of football Zvonimir Boban.

England's refereeing body the PGMOL has opted to use longer amounts of stoppage time from this season in order to reduce time-wasting and better account for goal celebrations, substitutions and injuries.

But some players and managers have criticised the move on player welfare grounds.

"It's absolutely absurd," said Boban, who captained Croatia's famous 1998 World Cup team to a third-place finish.
