So what went wrong for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United? The Norwegian told The Athletic he did not feel like the players "threw him under the bus", but admitted certain players made life difficult.

He added: "Some weren’t as good as their own perception of themselves. I won’t name names, but I was very disappointed when a couple turned down the chance to be captain.

"I was also disappointed when others said they wouldn’t play or train because they wanted to force their way out.

"Some players wanted to go. Tiredness [set in], since we demanded a lot, and that caused injuries. The air came out of the balloon at the end of that first season but in my two full seasons, we finished third and second in the Premier League."

  3. What does Sancho need at Man Utd?published at 10:18 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

    Manchester United

Jadon Sancho is a "top, top player" says Newcastle striker Callum Wilson who is sad that it is not working out for him at Manchester United.

Sancho is currently training away from the first team squad until issues with boss Erik ten Hag are resolved, with his career stalling after a promising spell at Borussia Dortmund.

"I know Jadon personally from playing with England and he is a top, top player," Wilson told The Footballer's Football Podcast. "He has come to the Premier League and found it difficult. Does [he] need an arm around [his] shoulder?

"Sometimes people go the opposite way and think that screaming and shouting at someone gets the best out of them. That might be the case for someone like myself but someone else might need an arm to fill them with confidence to get the best out of them.

"Great man management gives players confidence to perform and flourish without fearing they will be dropped next week or kicked out of the club."

  4. 'Sancho prefers to play left wing...where Marcus plays'published at 10:14 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

Jadon Sancho is currently training away from the first team and Manchester United after he was critical of the club management on social media.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he is sorry things had "not worked out" for the 23-year-old England winger following his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021.

"I wanted to sign him. Manchester United will never sign a player the manager doesn’t want. That’s not the case everywhere," Solskjaer told The Athletic.

"Jadon was put up as the number-one target for the right wing by the scouts and when you look at his talent, I could see why.

"Unfortunately, it has not worked out. When he arrived, he had to go to hospital and that was a setback as he couldn’t start the first games.

"He’s immensely talented and we haven’t seen the best of him. I hope we do, but he prefers to play left wing… where Marcus [Rashford] plays."

One will involve academy players, who will be involved in a UEFA Youth League match. The other will include first team representatives, directors, former players and fans.

  6. 'We wanted Bellingham badly'published at 10:05 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has highlighted the inherent difficulty in following Sir Alex Ferguson - Manchester United's most successful ever manager.

He said times had changed since Ferguson retired in 2013, with increased competition meaning United were no longer able to cherry pick the best players from the Premier League and Europe.

He named Erling Haaland, Declan Rice, Moises Caicedo, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane as players he considered signing.

"We felt we needed players ready for there and then. Brighton are very good at letting players come from abroad and find their feet for a year and a half. At United, you don’t have that luxury and that has cost the club loads of players," said Solskjaer.

"We wanted Jude Bellingham badly — he’s a Man United player, but I respect he chose Dortmund. That was probably sensible.

"I would have signed Kane every day of the week and my understanding was that he wanted to come. But the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from Covid-19, there was no bottomless pit."

  7. 'United can only play one way'published at 10:00 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

    Chris Sutton
Former Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United can only play in essentially one way and that's counter-attack. I don't think they have the players and dynamism in the middle of the park to really get after teams and that causes them a problem.

I actually give them a chance in Munich because I think Bayern will suit them - come on to them and then United can counter-attack. I think their football and brand of play is Ten Hag's biggest problem.

  8. 'It was like leaving your family'published at 09:55 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke to The Athletic, external about the emotional moment he said goodbye to his Manchester United "family" after a 4-1 defeat at Watford in November 2021 led to his sacking.

"Nobody told me, but I knew at half-time against Watford. We didn’t look like a Man United team; the players weren’t running for each other," he said.

"At half-time, I told the players it was probably going to be the last time we worked together and to play with pride. We almost turned it around, until Harry Maguire got sent off."

The following day Solskjaer said he got a text message from Ed Woodward - United's then executive vice chairman - asking him to attend a meeting at his office in the club's Carrington training base.

"That was pretty hard when you’ve been at the club for 18 years with all those good and bad times.

"I’d had lots of backing and good times with Ed. He’d given me the chance and for that, I’ll always be grateful.

"I dropped my family at the airport before the text arrived. After the text, I told my wife that I might be back in Norway before her.

"It was an emotional day. Very emotional. I didn’t think it would be, but it was like leaving your family. I wanted to speak to all the players and say goodbye. I spoke to the coaches and the staff. Then I went back to an empty house."

Ten Hag is without 12 first-team players as United take on the Bundesliga champions in Germany at 20:00 BST.

This includes Raphael Varane, Mason Mount and Harry Maguire, who have not travelled to Munich.

"There was always something, but you have to deal with it," said Ten Hag.

"I think I never started the best starting XI. That is football. You have to deal with it. I love these situations. You have to know what to do and focus on the process."

The timing of the opener was such a hammer-blow for Celtic. To that point they had more than matched their opponents, who struggled to engineer consistent pressure.

Celtic had a good balance of being fairly solid, with good shape, composed on the ball in the main and carried some threat. They had chances and one or two better decisions may have paid dividends.

The opening goal was absolutely crucial. Feyenoord returned with more purpose and tempo after half-time. It counted and Celtic's night utterly fell apart.

With nine men on the pitch it was mission impossible. So it proved.

They will take some heart from that opening half but major lessons will need to be learned ahead of the visit of Lazio.

Celtic's quest for a rare Champions League away victory goes on after having two men sent off in a second-half implosion to hand top seeds Feyenoord an opening group win.

Brendan Rodgers' side started brightly in search of a first away win in the competition since beating Anderlecht in 2017.

But it ended with another painful European defeat that leaves them bottom of their group after Lazio and Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 in Rome.

A long-range Calvin Stengs free-kick skimmed beyond Joe Hart to put the home side in front in first-half stoppage time.

Celtic's Gustaf Lagerbielke conceded a penalty for a tug in the box on Igor Paixao and was shown a second yellow card just after the hour mark, before Hart made a great save from Paixao's spot-kick.

The task become too great, though, when substitute Odin Thiago Holm crashed wildly into a tackle and earned a straight red.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh then made sure of Feyenoord's win after being gifted time and space to finish emphatically.

Someonesopinion: Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I thought Milan were there for the taking. We were set-up to get away point. Fair enough. We need to be more precise and clinical in these matches. It is going to be tough against PSG & Dortmund to get any points.
