    Northern Ireland 3-0 San Marino

Paul Smyth certainly enjoyed scoring his second international goal, and was very unlucky not to have had a third after it was ruled out by VAR for offside.

The brightest spark on the pitch is Paul Smyth. You have got to be saying to your team get the ball to him, because it's the only time that the crowd really get anyway into the game.

  3. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    Northern Ireland 2-0 San Marino

This time it is Dale Taylor whose goal is ruled out for offside, although this one was much clearer.

Jordan Thompson played in a low cross to the teenager, who thought he had tucked home his first international goal, but it wasn't to be.

  4. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    Northern Ireland 2-0 San Marino

Paul Smyth's exquisite lob from Jonny Evans' pinpoint pass is disallowed after a long VAR check for offside.

It looks tight and it is a shame for the QPR man given the quality of the finish.

The only criticism you could have, if you're looking to nit pick, is that they could pick up the pace ever so slightly.

  8. Postpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

After a fast start from Northern Ireland the tempo has dropped slightly, although they are still keeping the ball at ease.

    Northern Ireland 2-0 San Marino

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

This is exactly what Northern Ireland needed, they needed to put San Marino to the sword early on, get the crowd behind them and make this a comfortable game.

As I was saying, give the supporters something to cheer about and to take into the game on Tuesday night which is obviously going to be a much tougher game.

  12. CLOSE!published at 14:21 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    Northern Ireland 2-0 San Marino

Paul Smyth has been San Marino's chief tormentor so far in this game.

This time he troubles their backline with a long throw which finds Daniel Ballard, who glances wide from close range.

Northern Ireland are certainly in the mood today.

  13. 'Smyth has paid back the manager already'published at 14:18 British Summer Time 14 October 2023

    Northern Ireland 2-0 San Marino

    John O'Neill
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC Radio Ulster

I think Paul Smyth has already paid the manager back for the faith he has had in him to start the game.

To be fair, when we saw him the last few games, when he came on as a substitute, he was always there trying to make something happen on that right hand side.

Northern Ireland double their tally at Windsor Park!

Paul Smyth turns provider for the second goal, playing in a low cross to Josh Magennis, who slides in to convert a second for Michael O'Neill's men.

Having showed much greater attacking impetus in the opening stages of the game, Northern Ireland have been rewarded for their clinical finishing.

One thing about Paul Smyth is he always comes in and he is always at the back post, looking for goals.

It was a beautiful ball by Jamal Lewis and it was set up waiting for him and he duly obliged.

You couldn't have asked for a better start.

    Northern Ireland 1-0 San Marino

We have got to get hope back into this side, try and get a good win today, hopefully follow that up with a win on Tuesday night and give the fans something they can look forward to.

Hopefully get a little bit of an insight of what might be as the players get better, get older and more experienced.

An acrobatic volley from Paul Smyth has Northern Ireland ahead early!

After patient build-up play Dale Taylor feeds Jamal Lewis on the overlap, and his inviting cross falls to Smyth, whose scissor kick volley flies into the roof of the net.

An ideal start for Northern Ireland and Smyth on his first start for his country.
