The history of Casement Park stadium in west Belfast proves that in some parts of the world it is impossible to separate sport and politics.

Sporting and political leaders are working hand-in-hand to try to deliver international football to a rebuilt Casement Park as part of the Euros in 2028.

The British and Irish governments, plus the main sporting bodies, are together hoping the new stadium will be up and running two years before the tournament starts.

If it happens, it would be a historic moment in post-conflict Northern Ireland. Outside of the island of Ireland, some may wonder what the fuss is all about?

What is the big deal about playing soccer matches at a gaelic football venue in west Belfast?

The simple answer is that it would turn a lot of Belfast history on its head. West Belfast is a predominantly Irish nationalist area, where the main sports are those organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA).

It used to be that only GAA games were allowed on their pitches.

In the past 20 years, that old rule has been relaxed, and now there is a realistic possibility of international soccer being played on a gaelic pitch in west Belfast.

  3. Will controversial Casement Park be ready for Euro 2028?published at 10:06 British Summer Time 10 October 2023

Belfast's Casement Park may appear an unlikely choice as one of the 10 venues which form part of the UK and Republic of Ireland's joint bid to host the Euro 2028 finals.

First of all, like Everton's new stadium, it doesn't actually exist yet. However, unlike at Casement Park, construction of the new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock is actually under way at the moment.

Secondly, the primary use historically has been by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), and it was the home of Antrim's Gaelic football, hurling and camogie teams. It hasn't been used since 2013 and has since fallen into disrepair.

The proposed redevelopment of the site, which is set to become a state of the art 34,500 capacity stadium after initial plans for a 38,000 seater were rejected, has been hindered by a number of setbacks since first being suggested about a decade ago, including long-running legal challenges. Work on building it has yet to begin.

Northern Ireland's contribution to the hosting duties does not exist in the required form yet. Issues have plagued the redevelopment of the derelict site for 10 years.

It is a former Gaelic Football stadium which will be built into a new stadium with over 34,000 seats.

It initially opened in 1953 and became home to Antrim GAA, housing 31,000 fans albeit most of that was terracing.

  5. FA wants England to go through Euro 2028 qualifying processpublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 10 October 2023

    Dan Roan
    BBC sports editor

The FA wants England to reach Euro 2028 via the formal qualifying process, rather than be handed an automatic slot by Uefa, the BBC understands. This is because they think it would provide the team with better preparation for the tournament than a series of friendlies.

With five nations in the UK and Ireland bid - which will today be confirmed as unopposed hosts of the tournament at a Uefa ExCo meeting in Nyon, it is expected that Uefa will offer two ‘back-up’ berths for any host teams that fail to qualify on merit.

If more than two teams fail to qualify, it would mean the two teams with the best records would be handed those slots. It is therefore possible that as many as three teams from the UK and Ireland may not play in their own tournament if none reached the finals through qualifying.

To finally beat Manchester City in the Premier League was great for Arsenal and their manager Mikel Arteta, and it is also good for the title race.

I still think it will just be City and the Gunners battling it out come the end of the season but for now only three points separate the top four, which gives all of them hope.

The big surprise is seeing Tottenham lead the way as we head into the international break, but they are flying under new boss Ange Postecoglou and have picked up some excellent results.

I'm not sure how long Spurs will spend at the summit but the fact they don't have any European football this season will definitely help their chances of staying in the top four.

It means they won't face the same demands on their squad as many of their rivals who are in Europe, in terms of the quality and depth that you need to compete in both.

We saw how much the same situation helped Newcastle make it into the Champions League places last season, and now it can benefit Spurs too.

At some stage, I think they will miss Harry Kane and the points he earned them with the goals he scored when they were not playing well, but they are certainly not having any problems winning without him at the moment.

  19. Arsenal's Saka to miss England gamespublished at 08:34 British Summer Time 10 October 2023

    Bukayo SakaImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has been ruled out of England's games against Australia and Italy because of injury.

Saka missed his side's 1-0 Premier League win over champions Manchester City on Sunday with a hamstring injury.

The FA confirmed he has withdrawn after being assessed by England's medical team and would not be replaced in the squad, which now has 25 players. England face Australia on 13 October, before taking on Italy in a European Championship qualifier four days later.

"No, he will not make it," said Gunners boss Mikel Arteta after Sunday's game. "He has not trained for a single session."

While he would not disclose the likely length of Saka's spell on the sidelines, Arteta added: "He is not available to play football at the moment."

Saka's absence on Sunday ended a run of 87 consecutive Premier League games in which Arteta had played the 22-year-old winger.

He has been struggling with his hamstring in recent weeks, limping off during Arsenal's 2-1 Champions League loss at Lens on Tuesday, and being withdrawn in last weekend's victory at Bournemouth.
