    We'd settled in for a similar showing to the last round with Exeter putting bodies behind the ball and inviting their opponents to break them down.

    But that goal has really set the cat amongst the pigeons and given the hosts something to hold on to.

    Where did that come from? Middlesbrough have dominated play but Exeter play some nice build up play before Kyle Taylor finds Ryan Trevitt inside the box and the midfielder thumps a superb effort into the roof of the net.

    Middlesbrough will be very, very motivated. Just as Exeter want to make history, Middlesbrough want to get as far as they can as well.

    The teams are coming out - Exeter have made a real effort tonight - fans are holding up foil to make a mosaic in the two seated stands.

    Meanwhile home fans behind the goal in the Big Bank have held up a tifo saying 'The most important history is history we make today'.

    Exeter have never made round five in this competition - they could be just 90 minutes away from that history.

  19. Middlesbrough a more difficult game?

    Exeter v Middlesbrough (19:45 GMT)

    Exeter's only other appearance in the last 16 of the EFL Cup was in 1989 - the season they went on to win the old Fourth Division title.

    They lost 5-2 at Sunderland in a replay after holding the then Second Division side to a 2-2 draw at St James Park.

    And boss Gary Caldwell believes the challenge against Middlesbrough could be even greater than the one they overcame in the last round when they registered their first win over a top-flight side since beating Leicester City 3-1 in the FA Cup in 1981.

    "We said at the time Luton were a really difficult team, and a Premier League team. I think if anything Middlesbrough are probably better as a squad," he said.

    "Although they're in the Championship I think man-for-man, looking at their squad, I think they're better [than Luton]."

  20. Exeter looking to make history

    Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell has said his players should be looking forward to "creating history" against Middlesbrough.

    It is just the second time Exeter have reached the EFL Cup fourth round.

    They progressed by beating Premier League side Luton Town 1-0 in the third round in September.

    "If we do win then we are creating history - and that's something that should be really exciting for the players," Caldwell told BBC Devon.

    "They should be really looking forward to it and go and give it absolutely everything."
