  2. Middlesbrough edge thriller

    Championship side Middlesbrough reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after a thrilling win at League One Exeter.

    Ryan Trevitt's excellent opener put the underdogs ahead as he blasted into the top corner from the edge of the box.

    But Morgan Rogers' curling effort drew Boro level after the break and Samuel Silvera fired them ahead soon after.

    Trevitt scored another long-range goal to bring Exeter level before giving away a late penalty that Emmanuel Latte Lath converted to put Boro through.

    The win ended Exeter's hopes of a first EFL Cup quarter-final appearance as they bowed out in the last 16 for the second time in the club's history.

  3. Vale into quarter-finals for first time

    FT: Mansfield 0-1 Port Vale

    .

    Port Vale reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history by beating Mansfield.

    On-loan Tottenham striker Alfie Devine's fine solo goal ensured the League One side edged past their League Two hosts.

    The defeat ended the Stags' 20-match unbeaten run, which dated back to the end of last season.

    Port Vale made the higher division count, they were the better side throughout the game.

    This is why the EFL Cup is so important, Port Vale fans have had a really difficult couple of weeks watching their team struggle but now they see them in the quarter-finals.

    Exeter made a real game of this. Middlesbrough stepped it up in the second half but credit to Exeter they showed real resilience, made it a real game at 2-2 and then it could have been anyone's. A moment of madness cost them but that is football.

    Overall Middlesbrough were the better side. They had more possession and more chances.

    Exeter boss Gary Caldwell will have mixed emotions. He will be super proud of his team but there will be real regret that one moment of madness cost them a penalty shootout.

    Middlesbrough clear and almost catch Exeter on the counter but then the hosts win the ball back on halfway and James Scott decides to do a Harry Kane/David Beckham but he fails to hit the target with the ambitious effort.
