    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag speaking to Amazon Prime: "I am so happy that the strikers scored today, because that is what we needed. I know they are capable of that, Rasmus and Rashford and Garnacho. They are all good finishers and we have more than that too. They have to show it every game. Be accountable, believe in yourself and be ready to take the chance and score a goal."

On the half time team talk and keeping to the plan: "People only saw the result and judged the result at West Ham but we also played a solid game there. But they see the result and only complain. I know that football is about results and you get judged by them, that is normal, but as a manager you also have to see the performance, and we dictated the game at West Ham too."

Was Hojlund going to be subbed before Rashford's injury: "The strikers work so hard so we wanted to bring fresh energy there, we saw that one of them had to come off. We saw that Rashford had an issue so decided that was the change to make.

"I don't know [if it was a Christmas miracle], we created more. I am delighted Hojlund scored but it doesn't matter who scores, in the end we have to win. I am happy a striker scored, in front of the Stretford End too, and happy to get the three points."

  5. 'We have been brilliant up until this moment'published at 23:06 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

FT: Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa defender Clément Lenglet on Amazon Prime: "I'm not sure if we were too comfortable, but I think we started to play more behind. We needed to be more organised and we could have done better.

"The manager said after the game that this a reminder that level in the Premier League is really high. You know when you come to a place like Manchester United it will be really tough.

"When you lead 2-0 you should try to defend that and get a win. It's frustrating.

"We have been brilliant up until this moment."

  6. 'They have more experience than us at the top level'published at 23:04 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

FT: Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to Amazon Prime: "39 points? It is amazing. Are you asking me to speak in another direction?

"Ok only analysing tonight... 60 minutes, fantastic! Fantastic.

On what he was pleased with and then unhappy with: "Manchester United. When they scored their first goal the support here [at Old Trafford], the atmosphere came back and pushed them. They have very good players.

"Of course we have to be demanding of ourselves but accepting as well. Playing Manchester United here they can come back in the style that they did. I want to see the match with the first 60 minutes, which was very good, then we have to take experiences. The level we want to get to we have to improve.

"Some of our players already have that experience and of course some of them are now learning and gaining those experiences. Manchester United have more experience than us, more time than us being at the top level.

"in the end disappointed but accepting and understanding overall our first half of the season in context. "

    • Alejandro Garnacho’s brace, at the age of 19 years and 178 days, means he is the ninth different teenager to score more than one goal for Manchester United in a Premier League game.
    • Garnacho’s goal in the 59th minute ended Manchester United's run of 439 minutes in all competitions without a goal, since Scott McTominay’s winner against Chelsea earlier this month in the 69th minute.
    • Manchester United have now won 14 Premier League games in which they’ve trailed by at least two goals, at least five more such wins than any other side.
    • Aston Villa are the final side in the Premier League this season to drop points from a winning position. Indeed, it’s the first time they’ve led by at least two goals in a game in the competition and lost since a 3-2 defeat to Manchester City in May 2022.

Now, now Pete. To be fair to Manchester United you can only beat the teams in front of you, and this was a fine win against a very good Aston Villa side.

They've got to back things up away to Nottingham Forest in their next match on Saturday.

  10. 'It was a fantastic first 60 minutes'published at 22:58 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

FT: Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a fantastic 60 minutes, fantastic. We were in control of the game, we played very, very well.

"We were speaking in the dressing room after the first half that if they score one goal it can happen. We have to try to keep being consistent. But we did do that because we created two very good chances. The best chances of the match with Leon Bailey and John McGinn.

"We were fighting and competing very well but we didn't score. And then, twenty minutes they scored three goals. It was their best moment, they are a very good team with good players and playing at home.

"We needed control of the game and try to avoid the the mistakes that we did.

"But it was a fantastic first 60 minutes and it's been a fantastic first 39 points and of course we missed a great opportunity to take the points. But we have to accept and now my only focus is to start the second half of the season against Burnley on Saturday."

On Lucas Digne who was substituted in the first half: "I think he's going to be injured. Hamstring."

    • Leander Dendoncker’s goal for Aston Villa in the 26th minute is just the fourth time a visiting side to Manchester United in the Premier League have gone 2-0 up in the 26th minute or earlier – the other three being Newcastle United in October 2018, Liverpool in October 2021 and Nottingham Forest in August earlier this season.
    • John McGinn is the first Aston Villa player to score a direct free-kick in an away Premier League game since Ashley Westwood in March 2014 against Manchester United. Indeed, in the Premier League for Aston Villa, only Ashley Young (12), Lee Hendrie (10) and Steve Staunton (9) have more goals outside the box than his eight.

  12. 'First half of the season fantastic, but I want more'published at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

FT: Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery speaking to Amazon Prime:

On if this game was a reminder of the level they need to be at: "Two weeks ago I was asked if we were contenders to the title and said no, and was thinking the same as I am now. Why? Because we are playing several top teams that are contenders more than we are. Of course we are being consistent and better than a lot of teams so far this season.

"Today we missed an opportunity to have that consistency against one of the top ten teams. This can happen. The reaction after the first goal conceded was good, we even then created a few very good chances, but that is football.

On how to reset after this result: "Move on, be demanding. I told the players that the first part of the season was fantastic but I want more. If they want more we have to work hard to get it."

Paul, Birmingham: I think a little perspective is needed. Man Utd played well for half a game against a tired, depleted Villa team. But now take a look at the league table and see who will he happier going into the New Year.

His crosses also led to United's equaliser and winner. He's not everyone's favourite, but he had a really good game tonight.

  15. 'Sometimes you wonder if you are good enough to be here in those tough times'published at 22:46 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2023

FT: Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes speaking to Amazon Prime: "Obviously we were really happy for Rasmus to get that first [league] goal, but not only for him, the fact it made the score 3-2 as well because we need the three points. He needs to score goals, he is eager to do it.

"All we want is for our strikers to have enough confidence to score goals. Rasmus knows that he is going to have pressure, he plays for one of the biggest clubs in the world, he knows how it is playing for this club, you get a lot of attention so you need to get used to that.

"I hope not [that is is the best day of his life] because I hope there is more to come, we really need him and every striker in the team to score goals.

On the belief shown in the second half: "The belief has to be there, because if you don't believe in each other then it is going to be really tough. In some moments you drop that belief in others or in yourself, you have those thoughts that you might not be good enough to be here, it is normal. When things aren't going right you always get those doubts, no matter how brave or confident you are.

On building consistency going forward: "I don't want to speak on this because we have had so many post [match] interviews saying 'now were are going to move forwards from this' and we didn't. But we have aims that are higher than we are at the moment but we have to look game by game. Understand the reality of where we are, get the basics right, and take it game by game."

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to BBC Match of the Day on Alejandro Garnacho: "He played a fantastic game. He was so disappointed after West Ham that he didn't score his one-on-ones. Now he's scored twice and it's a reward for all the effort and work he puts in."

On Rasmus Hojlund's first Premier League goal: "He knows he can do it. On the highest level in the UCL he scored five and displayed his ability. He knows he can do it at any level.

"The Premier League is close to the Champions League. So it will come and give him confidence. When strikers have confidence, they will score."

On Sir Jim Ratcliffe's accepted bid to purchase a 25% stake in Manchester United: "We are optimists. We have been kept informed during the whole process. It's very good, we are looking forward to working with them. It's positives for United I know. But for now, it was important to focus on this game for our season. It's important for this team to get a base that we can build on.

FT: Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to BBC Match of the Day on what he said to his players at half-time: "Keep believing. I think our fans they deserved it. They are always behind us and we've had so many setbacks. So I'm really pleased from the performance of this team. What kind of team can handle and deal with the amount of setbacks we have had?

"They are resilient, they have showed character and their personality to turn it around. I am very pleased with the performance of this team.

"Keep going, even when you get setbacks. Again we had so many setbacks today as well. Two set plays and we lose focus, also you can say very well done from Villa.

"But we created moments in the first half and you get disappointed you don't score. Straight after half-time we have a goal which is offside. But I am very pleased with the strength of my team and the character the team showed."
