  1. Good night!published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 2-2 Motherwell

Well, at the end of all that, St Johnstone remain bottom of the Scottish Premiership table. But it's a point, and it could be a vital point come the end of the season.

St Johnstone were superb in the first half, Motherwell fantastic in the second. There were reasons to be angry and amazed for both sets of fans.

Ultimately it was a superb game of football, and a decent advert for the Scottish top flight. We've not been able to say that as often as we'd have liked this season.

Do I have any regrets over things I've written in tonight's live, though?

    No. It's a good laugh, isn't it?

    See you next time.

  2. Levein 'reasonably happy' with St Johnstone debutpublished at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 2-2 Motherwell

St Johnstone manager Craig Levein told BBC Sportsound: "The third goal is the vital one. If they get it, they're back in the match. I'm a little disappointed that we got clawed back to 2-2, but all credit to the players, after that they could have easily felt sorry for themselves.

"You've got to accept that this was a closely fought contest. I'm sure Stuart will be reasonably happy with his players coming back. I'm reasonably happy with some of the stuff we've played. I'm disappointed with the fact we lost two goals in the second half.

"It knocked us, we got spooked. There are things in there, with those two goals, that are easily rectifiable. Shutting off that corridor across the face of goal, we can fix that. It takes time to get these messages across to the players. Their effort today was fantastic. The supporters appreciate that.

"Some of it was good today, we got the ball switched well, we advanced up the park with safe possession and we created chances. That's another important thing. We haven't scored much this season, we scored two today and could have had more.

[On being a manager] "It's in the blood. It brings pressure, of course. It's the same for the players on the pitch. I just love doing it.

  3. Kettlewell 'disappointed' but credit's player's fightbackpublished at 22:09 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2023

    FT: St Johnstone 2-2 Motherwell

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell told BBC Scotland: "We find ourselves facing a tough second half, in a tough spot. The thing that annoyed me in the first half was the goals really impacted the body language and confidence of our players. We looked shy, we didn't want to receive the ball, our energy was low.

"It comes from two corner kicks, that's where we conceded two goals. When we got our first goal, you can see the chances we can create. It's a vicious circle, we have to start games better - that's our Achilles heel at the moment.

"Even at 0-0, we were relatively in control. Sometimes it's between the ears, the decisions you make in big moments.

"It's an unbelievable chance to win a game when you're 2-0 down. He has to get his head up and square it, Theo Bair has a tap in. I'd have bitten your hand off for that chance at half-time.

"I'm disappointed at some of what I've seen tonight but they've managed to dig themselves out of a massive hole. We showed good quality and character to get ourselves back into it.

"It's important that we're not finding ourselves a few goals behind. That luck will run out. We're battered and bruised, we've taken a lot of knocks in the last few days. We've got a big injury list, some significant ones too but I can assure you the players are giving everything for this football club."

It's always advisable to avoid resorting to cliché, but it's impossible to describe this as anything other than a game of two halves.

St Johnstone looked so comfortable before the break. They did not have to work too hard for their goals but took them well enough, and the confidence seemed to be growing.

Craig Levein will be annoyed and confused as to why his side fell off it so badly after the break, but credit has to go to his opposite number Stuart Kettlewell. Whatever he said at half-time worked, as did his substitutions.

Motherwell were a team transformed in the second-half and had Oli Shaw showed a bit more composure in the dying moments, they may well have been heading down the road with three points.

Motherwell's winless run goes on - that's eight league games now - but this feels like a big point on the road.

    FT: St Johnstone 2-2 Motherwell

Although it may feel like a point saved, that win still eludes Stuart Kettlewell and his side.

Motherwell have now failed to win in their last eight games in the Scottish Premiership.

Their last longer winless streak was from 6 November 2022 to 4 February 2023, a run of 11 games. It was after that run, and the Scottish Cup defeat to Raith Rovers, that Stevie Hammell was sacked.

However, they have also have won five points from losing positions in the Premiership this season - more than any other team. A reason to be cheerful, perhaps?

  6. FULL-TIME St Johnstone 2-2 Motherwellpublished at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2023

Not to be for Craig Levein or St Johnstone in the end.

After leading by two goals at half-time, they looked home and hosed as Motherwell's poor run of form weighed heavy on them.

But as we've seen before, you can't write this Motherwell side off. They were a different beast in the second half, and it was goals from Shane Blaney and Mika Beireth that rescued a point to take back to Lanarkshire.

I'm glad I don't have to pick the player of the match. Options all over the park.

Oh, Oli Shaw. The Motherwell man is only just on as a sub and he's put clear through on goal. It's the perfect chance, but he somehow gets the ball caught between his feet and St Johnstone get the ball away.

That really should have been the winner.

    He almost did it!

Graham Carey managed to get away from a slipping Georgie Gent and delivered a beautiful cross in, but Stevie May's header is just over the bar.

Oh my WORD! Had that gone in, we might have just seen the goal of the season.

Liam Kelly punches a cross away and Matt Smith takes one touch to flick the ball up to himself before volleying a looping shot that Kelly just about tips over the bar.

    This is frantic stuff!

Liam Gordon - give yourself a pat on the back.

Conor Wilkinson slips Theo Bair through and he would be one-on-one, were it not for a superb last-ditch tackle from the Saints captain. He had to get that right!

I tell you what, the Motherwell fans are up for this now!

To be fair they haven't stopped banging their drums and chanting all evening, but those two quick fire goals have given them belief that maybe their team can go on and complete a remarkable turnaround.

    St Johnstone 2-2 Motherwell

Blair Spittal curls one onto the head of Theo Bair, but he can only power his header straight into the turf. He should have at least hit the target there.

It feels like there's one more goal in this - I just don't know who for!

And in the aftermath of that goal, Nicky Clark is replaced by Max Kucheriavyi - an interesting swap from Levein, that one.

It's another Saints midfielder catching the eye, though. Matt Smith has rolled two defenders and is fouled right on the edge of the box. Free-kick only, but again Harry Paton is one lucky boy.

    There it is! The equaliser!

Georgie Gent is freed on the left and delivers an inch-perfect ball to Mika Beireth, who sort of kung-fu kicks the ball into the corner of the net.

    We said it was coming!

They nearly have the equaliser. Blair Spittal whips a corner onto the six yard box and Dan Casey's crashing header is just a few inches wide of the post.

This feels like it's going one way at the moment...

GOAL St Johnstone 2-1 Motherwellpublished at 69 mins

    Shane Blaney

Motherwell had been knocking on the door and finally the pressure pays!

Blair Spittal collects a cleared corner and chips back in. Andy Considine's defensive header only comes to Conor Wilkinson at the back post. He heads it into a dangerous area and Blaney powers it in from close range.

Is there another Motherwell comeback on the cards?!

    St Johnstone 2-0 Motherwell

Ohhhh Motherwell, how have you not scored?!

Brilliant play from Mika Beireth gets the striker into the box, as he Bergkamp flicks the ball away from a Saints defender. He squares the ball and Bair is waiting to pounce... but it's an incredible block from Ryan McGowan.

Or is it a bad miss from Bair? We'll wait for a replay.

    St Johnstone 2-0 Motherwell

Another Motherwell change forthcoming. Georgie Gent replaces Callum Slattery. The English midfielder had committed five fouls in the game, more than any other player.

Maybe wise to give him the shepherd's crook.
